        Thyroid Nodule Requiring Thyroidectomy in a Patient with Thyroid Hemiagenesis

        Thyroid hemiagenesis (TH) is a rare congenital disorder in which one lobe of the thyroid gland fails to develop. Since most patients experience no clinical symptoms, TH is typically diagnosed incidentally by taking imaging of neck region. In this paper, we report a case of right lobe TH associated with follicular neoplasm. A 65-year-old woman was referred for surgery for a left thyroid nodule, diagnosed as suspicious for follicular neoplasm on fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). In 2012, the patient underwent screening by neck ultrasonography and was incidentally diagnosed with right TH and a left thyroid nodule. The patient had routine follow up for the thyroid nodule and thyroid function tests, and she was diagnosed for subclinical hypothyroidism which did not require medicated until 2015. The patient took thyroid hormone medication for 2 years (2015-2017), until her thyroid hormone levels normalized. In 2021, follow up FNAB was performed on the left thyroid nodule, and cytologic evaluation revealed that the nodule was suspicious for follicular neoplasm. Preoperative computed tomography scan revealed an absence of the right thyroid gland and TH was incidentally diagnosed. Left thyroid lobectomy was performed on this patient, and during operation, neither of right thyroid gland nor isthmus were found. Post operatively, she was prescribed with levothyroxine medication for thyroid hormone replacement. The pathologic report revealed nodular hyperplasia with Hashimoto thyroiditis. Regular follow up and surveillance of patients with TH is recommended for the early diagnosis of other thyroid diseases.

        Transactions : Women`s Body Exposure in Leisure Wear during the 1930s-Focused on Bathing Suits, Shorts, and Halters-

        Social reactions to body exposure in American leisure wear (bathing suits, shorts, and halters) in the 1930s were analyzed to provide an understanding of the process of adopting more abbreviated and less-occasion specific styles of garments in women`s fashion. The research questions were as follow: How did women expose their bodies in leisure wear during the 1930s? How did the social reaction to women`s body exposure in leisure wear change throughout the 1930s? How did the body exposure in women`s leisure wear play a significant role in the history of women`s fashion? Primary sources were collected from issues of The New York Times published in the 1930s. Topics including dress, fashion, ethics, social ethics, and sexual ethics, were reviewed in The New York Times indices. The findings were analyzed and interpreted with reference to secondary sources that included books and research papers. The results showed that the body exposure of the styles as well as the place where these styles were worn was a public issue. Women were criticized and regulated for body exposure as well as for wearing bathing suits, shorts, and halters on the streets. However, the social regulations that restricted bathing suit styles almost disappeared by the end of the decade. This represented the change of social expectations toward body exposure in the 1930s. In addition, reports of laws that forbade the wearing of bathing suits, halters, and shorts outside of beaches, pools, and parks indicated women`s increased attempts to expose their bodies in public places. However, reactions to women`s body exposure in leisure wear changed to accept more flexibility in the social customs throughout the decade. These phenomena were a partial step toward the popularization of less occasion-specific styles ? sportswear ? that took place in the 20th century.

        한국문화상품 디자인에서 의미전달이 가능한 한글 적용 방법 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 한국 문화에서 뿌리 깊게 박혀있는 문자한글을 문화상품에 적용할 수 있는 방법에 대한 연구로서, 한글의 의미와 조형성을 동시에 보여 주되, 특히 한자로 사용되는 길상문자를 한글로 바꾸어 문양화하는 방법을 제안하는 것이다. 본 연구를 진행하기 위해 총17개의 사이트들을 검색한 결과, 문자를 적용한 문화상품들은 대부분 의미전달보다는 글자의 조형성에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 길상의미를 내포하면서 조형성을 지닌 있는 한글 단어를 사용하여 문양화하는 것에 대해 크게 3가지 방법을 제안하였다. 첫째, 한글 단어와 다른 요소를 함께 사용하는 방법으로 한글 단어와 자음을 함께 사용하는 방법, 한글 단어와 글귀를 함께 사용하는 방법, 한글 단어와 그림을 함께 사용하는 방법이다. 둘째, 한글 단어를 분화하여 적용하는 방법은 자음과 모음을 분화하여 하나의 패턴에 맞추어 글자를 나열하는 방법으로 규칙적 혹은 불규칙적으로 배열하고 글자의 형태를 분화하지만 다시 조합해서 읽으면 단어가 보이는 형태로 무미건조해 보일 수 있는 텍스트를 재밌게 읽을 수 있는 방법이다. 셋째, 한글 단어를 반복하여 사용하는 방법이다. 이는 두 가지 방법으로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있는데, 한 개의 단어를 반복하여 사용하는 방법으로 기하학적인 문양 같은 느낌을 보여줄 수 있는 방법과, 여러 개의 다른 단어를 사용하여 문양화 하는 방법이다. 이상의 세 가지 방법을 활용하여 실제 디자인을 전개해 봄으로써 한글 적용의 가능성을 확인하였다. Characters are applied to cultural products frequently in Korean culture, and it seems deeply rooted. The purpose of this study is to study methods of applying the Korean character culture, which has characters that play an extensive role and have profound meanings, to cultural products. Having examined the status, the focus has been placed on the formativeness of the characters, not conveyance of meanings. On the basis of these results. this studu attempts to propose three mrthods of using Hangeul words containing Gilsang meanings and patternize them. The first method is to use Hangeul words with other elements. It can be largely divided into three methods: 1)using Hangeul words with consonants, 2) using Hangeul words with phrases and 3) using Hangeul words with pictures. The second method is to divide Hangeul words. It means to divide the consonants and vowels of words, and arrange them according to a pattern regulary or irregularly. the shapes of the characters are divided, but if they are combined again, the words will be visible. This method will make it possible to read seemingly prosaic texts interestingly. The third method is to use Hangeul words repeatedly. This method can be divided into two methods. One is to use one word repeatedly to give the effect of a geometric pattern and the other is to use several different words and patternize them.

      • American Women`s Adoption of Pants and the Changing Definition of Femininity during World War 2

        Articles from The New York Times and magazines including Consumer Digest, Journal of Home Economics, Scholastic, Time and Woman`s Home Companion were analyzed in this study and focused on the following research questions: How did the social situation influence American women`s adoption of pants during World War II? How were the social opinions of women`s adoption of pants? How did American women`s adoption of pants and the social opinions on women`s pants represent the process of change in the definition of femininity during World War II? Women were encouraged to wear pants in work places because many women had to work in defense industries and farms. Women had to wear pants during the winter to keep warm in order to conserve oil, rubber, and other materials. In addition, wearing men`s clothes became a fashion trend among college women during this period. However, practicality was often not the primary thing alone to consider in women`s fashion. Femininity was still important in women`s fashion. There were criticisms over the women`s adoption of pants. Regulations against pants were imposed on women, while there were women who wanted to dress like ladies even at defense industries. An abrupt change in women`s gender roles and the increased adoption of trousers aroused social ambivalence about the traditional definition of femininity. Even though many women returned to their homes after the war, the social demand of practicality in women`s day-time clothes during the war offered women the experience of comfort and practicality in pants. These experiences contributed to paving the way for more women to abopt pants and helped establishing a new definition of femininity after the war.

        When there is a will, there is a way: A Quantitative Comparison of the Newspaper Coverage of the 2004 Summer Paralympic and Olympic Games

        This study analyzed the coverage of the 2004 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games by the South Korean national newspaper, the Chosun Ilbo. Quantitative methods were used to compare the amount and size of the coverage devoted to the 2004 Summer Olympic Games (August 13-30, 2004) and Paralympic Games (September 17-30, 2004) for both articles and photographs. A total of 277 articles (Olympics 261, Paralympics 16) and 237 photographs (Olympics 220, Paralympics 17) were analyzed. For articles and photographs, z-scores for proportion in size and chi-square (χ2) in frequency were used to determine difference of the coverage between the Olympic and Paralympic Games. There was a significant difference (p<.001) for both articles and photographs between the Olympics and Paralympics (Olympics: articles=3002.2 sq. inches, photographs=3043.9 sq. inches; Paralympics: articles=248.9 sq. inches, photographs=197 sq. inches). In terms of location of text, the Paralympic coverage was found primarily on the first page of the sport section compared to the Olympic Games where the majority of coverage was on the inside pages of the sport section (p<.05). The amount of the Olympic coverage for South Korean (domestic) and international athletes was equal; whereas for the Paralympics, Korean athletes were covered more often than international athletes (p<.05). Reasons for the results are discussed and compared to previous quantitative studies examining the newspaper coverage of other international sporting events.

        무용을 통한 인성 및 법교육: 중학교 자유학기제 ‘춤추는 법(法)’ 교육프로그램 개발에 관한 실행연구

        이 연구는 청소년들을 위한 인성 및 법교육을 주제로, 홀리스틱 관점의 새로운 무용교육 수업모형을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 71명의 서울특별시 관내 중학교 재학생을 대상으로, 2018년 8월부터 12월까지 8차시 프로그램을 운영하였다. 교육의 기본방향은 민주시민 의식, 타인존중 의식, 자기존중 의식 함양을 목표로 한다. 1차 시에서는 ‘사람과 법’을 주제로, 법의 이념과 필요성을 탐색하도록 하였다. 2차시에서는 ‘우리들이 만드는 법이야기’를 주제로, 학생들 스스로 법제관이 되어 그 규범을 공유하는 과정의 이야기들을 움직임으로 구성하도록 하였다. 3차시에서는 ‘교통안전과 법’을 주제로, 교통법의 필요성을 탐색할 수 있도록 하였다. 4차시에서는 ‘사이버 공간과 법’을 주제로, 마임, 접촉즉흥 등의 움직임을 통해 감정을 표현할 수 있도록 하였다. 5차시에서는 ‘환경과 법’을 주제로, 환경보호를 위한 캐치프레이즈를 만들어 움직임으로 표현할 수 있도록 하였다. 6차시에서는 ‘지식 및 창작활동과 법’을 주제 로, 지식 및 창작활동과 법의 관계를 탐색하고 움직임 탐색을 적용한 창작활동을 실시하였다. 7차시에서는 ‘학교에서의 법’을 주제로, 학교생활에 적용가능한 실천적인 학습활동을 이끌어낼 수 있도록 하였다. 8차시에서는 ‘춤추는 법, 옴니버스 춤 극장’ 을 주제로, 그동안 학습한 법 관련 내용과 움직임을 자유롭게 배치 및 선정하여 작품 으로 완성하도록 하였다. ‘춤추는 법’ 모니터링과 성과공유회를 통해 실생활과 연계한 체험형 인성 및 법교육의 실천, 창의적 사고를 담지하는 인문적 무용교육, 무한상 상과 표현이 가능한 몸짓의 교육학, 민주시민의식과 상호이해 제고 등의 교육적 의미들을 발견할 수 있었다. The purpose of this study was to present a new model of dance education from a holistic perspective on the subject of personality and law-related education. The study was conducted on 71 middle school students in Seoul with an eight-week program from August to December 2018. The goal of education was to foster a democratic citizenship, a sense of respect for others, and a sense of self-respect. ‘People and Law’ encouraged students to explore the ideology and necessity of the law on their own. In the theme of ‘How we make the story related law?’, students themselves became law enforcement officers and organized into movements the stories of sharing the norms. ‘Traffic Safety and Law’ was empowered to explore the need for traffic laws. ‘Cyber Space and Law’ allowed the emotion to be expressed through movements such as mime and instantaneous activation. ‘Environment and Law’ was a class that creates catchphrases for environmental protection and leads them to express them in motion. ‘Knowledge and Creative Activities and Laws’ was a class that explores the relationship between knowledge and creative activities and law and encourages people to carry out creative activities applied with movement search. ‘Act in Schools’ was designed to elicit practical learning activities applicable to school life. ‘How to Dance? Omnibus Dance Theater’ was designed to connect the subjects of the law freely with movement and complete the work. This study was founded educational meanings such as the practice of hands-on personality and law-related education relevant to real life, the humanistic dance education that contains creative thinking, the Pedagogy of body language that is infinitely imaginable and expressive, and the enhancement of democratic civic consciousness and mutual understanding.
