        Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) has become a key passive device for applications in fiber-optic communications. It also has a great potential in a wide range of sensing applications for the measurement of strain, temperature, pressure, etc. In this paper, we report experimental results on a temperature/strain sensor composed of a bare FBG and a solder-clad FBG connected in cascade. Since the Bragg wavelength of the solder-clad FBG does not change with strain and its sensitivity is four times as large as that of the bare FBG up to 110℃, it was used to measure temperature. On the other hand, strain information was obtained from the reflection wavelength difference between the two FBGs.

      • Effects of host refuge on the sex ratio of progeny of hymenopterous parasitoid

        Effects of host density and refuge on the sex ratio of progeny of hymenopterous parasitoids was tested with Bracon hebetor Say parasitizing Plodia interpunctella (Hübner). The overall sex ratio (male/total) of progeny produced per female with and without refuge was estimated to be 0.49 and 0.41, respectively. Regardless of refuge, the sex ratio decreased as host density increased. But, at host density of 128 with refuge the sex ratio was significantly lower than that without regfuge (t=-2.17, df=24; P=0.040). The number of pupae per host larva with refuge was similar to that without refuge at the host densities tested (t=-0.10, df=53.4; P=0.921). The number of attacked host larvae showed significantly different at all host densities with and without refuge (t=-3.33, df=209; P=0.001).

      • Effects of Genetically Modified Virus-resistant Pepper on the Insect Community in the Pepper Cultivation Area

        The effects of the genetically modified virus-resistant pepper (line: 15, 20) and the non-GM pepper (line: 2377, 915) on the insect community in the pepper cultivation area were evaluated. Sampling was conducted using yellow sticky traps and pheromone funnel traps in Anseong and Deokso fields. Total number of insects caught on sticky trap were 3273 individuals at GM pepper and 2949 individuals at non-GM pepper in Anseong and 4357 individuals at GM and 3712 individuals at non-GM in Deokso. Total number of aphids collected on leaves were 451 and 330 individuals at GM and non-GM pepper in Anseong, respectively and 79 individuals at GM and 41 individuals at non-GM pepper in Deokso. The total number of the insect individuals caught on sticky trap was not shown significant differences between GM and non-GM pepper at Anseong and Deokso fields, respectively. Also, there were no significant differences in seasonal occurrences of aphids caught on sticky traps in GM and non-GM pepper at both fields.         The effects of the genetically modified virus-resistant pepper (line: H15) and the Non-GM pepper (line: P2377) on the insect community in the pepper cultivation area were evaluated. Sampling was conducted using yellow sticky traps and pheromone funnel traps in Anseong and Deokso fields. Total number of insects caught on sticky trap were 3924 individuals at GM pepper and 3670 individuals at Non-GM pepper in Anseong and 2362 individuals at GM and 2528 individuals at Non-GM in Deokso, respectively. The total number of the insect individuals caught by sticky trap was not shown significant differences between GM and Non-GM pepper at Anseong and Deokso fields, respectively. The number of aphids per sticky trap ranged from 11.60±2.02 to 1.92±0.96 at Non-GM and from 11.56±2.15 to 0.33±0.23 at GM in Anseong, and from 2.78±1.22 to 0.11±0.08 and from 2.73±0.84 to 0.11±0.08 at Non-GM and GM pepper in Deokso, respectively. There were no significant differences in seasonal occurrences of aphids caught on sticky traps in GM and Non-GM pepper at both fields, and significant differences in aphids population density between Non-GM and GM were not observed.

      • Effects of Functional GM Chinese Cabbage (SKCP19) on the Insect Community in the Cabbage Cultivation Area

        The effects of the transgenic Chinese cabbage (SKCP19 line) with myrosinase gene and Chinese cabbage (SC19 line) without gene introduction on the insect community were evaluated. Sampling was conducted using yellow sticky traps and wing pheromone traps in Anseong and Deokso fields, respectively. The total number of individuals caught by sticky trap was not shown significant differences between transgenic Chinese cabbage and non transgenic Chinese cabbage at Anseong and Deokso fields, respectively (t=0.72; df=46; P>0.05, t=0.38; df=38; P>0.05). Also, There were no significant differences in density of Plutella xylostella population caught by pheromone traps on transgenic and non transgenic cabbage at both fields (t=0.59; df=22; P>0.05, t=0.52; df=18; P>0.05).         Prognostic significance of lymphovascular invasion in patients with prostate cancer treated with postoperative radiotherapy

        Purpose: To determine prognostic significance of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in prostate cancer patients who underwent adjuvant or salvage postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) after radical prostatectomy (RP) Materials and Methods: A total of 168 patients with prostate cancer received PORT after RP, with a follow-up of ≥12 months. Biochemical failure after PORT was defined as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) ≥0.2 ng/mL after PORT or initiation of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for increasing PSA levels regardless of the value. We analyzed the clinical outcomes including survivals, failure patterns, and prognostic factors affecting the outcomes. Results: In total, 120 patients (71.4%) received salvage PORT after PSA levels were >0.2 ng/mL or owing to clinical failure. The 5-year biochemical failure-free survival (BCFFS), clinical failure-free survival (CFFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), overall survival, and cause-specific survival rates were 78.3%, 94.3%, 95.0%, 95.8%, and 97.3%, respectively, during a follow-up range of 12–157 months (median: 64 months) after PORT. On multivariate analysis, PSA level of ≤1.0 ng/mL at the time of receiving PORT predicted favorable BCFFS, CFFS, and DMFS. LVI predicted worse CFFS (p = 0.004) and DMFS (p = 0.015). Concurrent and/or adjuvant ADT resulted in favorable prognosis for BCFFS (p < 0.001) and CFFS (p = 0.017). Conclusion: For patients with adverse pathologic findings, PORT should be initiated as early as possible after continence recovery after RP. Even after administering PORT, LVI was an unfavorable predictive factor, and further intensive adjuvanttherapy should be considered for these patients.

      • A study of subjective ratings for grip strengths based on target force levels

        Objective: The aim of this study was an analysis for accuracy of subjective ratings for target force levels (%MVC Levels) when there is no feedback of exertions for participants in this analysis. Background: Many studies of perceived force exertion about the static contractions have been conducted with using the Borg CR-10 scale for various levels of target force exertions (i.e., %MVCs). However, there was only few studies for how people correctly estimate their subjective ratings of the grip strength associated with target force levels under no feedback. Method: A total of 10 healthy males were asked to perform their maximum grip strength, and then each participant was also asked to evaluate the subjective rating with the random target force levels (10 ~ 90% MVCs). Results: As the target force level was increased, subjective rating was also increased. In accuracy of subjective ratings for target force levels, 30, 40, 50, and 90% force levels were accurately estimated by the subjective rating of grip strength. However, participants under-estimated for the 10% and 20%MVC, whereas over-estimated for the 60~80% MVCs, respectively. Conclusion: Based on the study of accuracy of subjective perceive ratings for target force levels, people showed under-estimation for the relatively lower levels of target force levels and over-estimation for the higher levels of target force level (90% MVC). Most participants estimated fairly accurate subjective ratings for the target force levels of 40~50% MVCs. Application: The results of this study may applied as for understanding of the subjective rating of grip strength pattern based on the various voluntary grip force levels.

        Background/Aims: This study was performed to evaluate whether the prevalence rates of primary antibiotic resistance in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) isolates and the eradication rate of H. pylori could be different between cancer and non-cancer patients. Methods: H. pylori were isolated from gastric mucosal biopsy specimens obtained from 269 Koreans, who did not have any eradication therapy history and were diagnosed as one of the following diseases; chronic gastritis, benign gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer or gastric cancer. The susceptibilities of the H. pylori isolates to amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, tetracycline, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin were examined with the agar dilution method. In addition, eradication rate of H. pylori was evaluated. Results: There was no significant difference in the primary antibiotic resistance to above eight antibiotics among chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. Furthermore there was no difference of antibiotic resistance between cancer and non-cancer patients, and there was no difference of eradication rate of H. pylori according to disease. Conclusions: Primary antibiotic resistance and H. pylori eradication rate were not different between cancer and non-cancer patients. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2011;58:74-81)

        센서 네트워크의 대표적 기술인 ZigBee 에서는 Trust Center 역할을 정의하고 이를 통한 키 분배를 통해 안전한 데이터 통신을 한다. 그러나 Trust Center 를 통한 키 분배는 모든 트래픽이 Trust Center 로 집중됨으로써 부하 및 지연이 발생된다. 본 논문에서는 ZigBee 환경에서의 안전한 통신을 위한 키 분배기법을 설계하였다. 제안하는 키 분배 기법은 키 분배 과정을 Trust Center(TC)와 센서 노드 간의 키 분배(TC-to-Node), 센서 노드 간의 키 분배(Node-to-Node), Trust Center 간의 키 분배(TC-to-TC)로 세분화시켜 설계하였다. 특히 Trust Center 간의 키 분배를 통해 이전의 키 정보를 재사용 함으로써 에너지 효율성 및 안정성을 높였다.

        N/A We studied several viral replication markers of hepatitis B virus in patients with chronic hepatitis B and hepatocellular carcinoma to evaluate the clinical significance of thesemarkers in serum. The patients comprised of 43 males and 8 females, and ages from 17 to 64 (mean: 34) years. All patients were sero-positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Histologically, 36 patients showed chronic active hepatitis and 15 showed hepatocellular carcinoma. The viral replication markers tested were hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), antibody to hepatitis B e antigen (anti-HBe), Immunoglobulin M antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (IgM anti-HBc), DNA polymerase and hepatitis B virus deoxyribonucleic acid (HBV-DNA). The results were summerized as follows. 1) The younger the patients, the higher was the positive rate of HBeAg; the older the patients, the higher was the positive rate of anti-HBe. 2) There was a reverse correlation between the age and the level of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT); the younger the patients, the higher was the titer. But no correlation was noted between age and the level of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST). 3) The histologic findings of the liver tended to be more severe in older patients. The patients with hepatocellular carcinoma were the oldest group. 4) The positive rate of HBeAg was higher in patients with chronic hepatitis than in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. but there was no difference between these two groups in the positive rate of IgM anti-HBc. 5) The positive rate of HBV-DNA and DNA polymerase was 63% and 35%, respectively, and their titers were significantly low. 6) There was no significant correlation between the positive rate of HBeAg, IgM anti-HBc, HBV-DNA, and DNA polymtrase. On the basis of these findings, it is suggested that the natural history of chronic hepatitis B of Koreans might be different from that of Caucasians; the positive rate and the titers of the viral replication markers were lower in Koreans.
