TC (Telecommunications) Vol.40 No.10
In this paper, we propose a group scheduling scheme to efficiently utilize network resources for core nodes in optical burst switching networks. This scheme schedules multiple bursts utilizing an interval graph to obtain the maximum stable set using the information such as arrival times and burst lengths from the collected header packets. Simultaneous scheduling of multiple bursts in a scheduling window results in lower burst loss probability and increased channel utilization than those proposed previously using one-to-one mapping. Simulation results for both cases of variable and fixed burst sizes show that the group scheduling scheme is better than the immediate scheduling, so called Latest Available Unused Channel with Void Filling, scheme in both performance metrics above mentioned.

In this paper, we propose a novel and simple optical technique for the detection of subcarrier-multiplexed(SCM) labels using optical interleavers. Optical-baseband packet signals with suppressed subcarriers appear at the through-pass port of the optical interleaver and SCM labels with suppressed optical carrier exit from the optical SCM extraction port. Since it does not require optical circulators, this structure shows less insertion loss than the previously proposed optical label detectors. The periodic nature of the interleaver transfer function makes it possible to detect multiple SCM channels simultaneously from an incoming wavelength-multiplexed signal stream. Detection of a 155-Mb/s ASK modulated 9.79-GHz subcarrier using a 10-GHz SCM optical label detector has been performed successfully and verified through optical spectra and bi t-error-rate measurements.

Operation and maintenance (OAM) in optical burst switching (OBS) networks has not yet been addressed even though OBS has been gaining research interest in recent years. In this paper, we defined five OBS functions such as Burst Termination (BT), Burst Transmission (BTX), Burst Switching (BSW), Routing and Switching Control (RSC), and Protection and Restoration (PAR). A functional model for OBS networks and an OAM architecture are designed to meet the operational requirements. We present the first framework to realize OAM in OBS networks, including OAM activities, OAM-capable OBS nodes such as ingress edge, core, and egress edge nodes, OAM information and communication models and protocols. A number of examples of possible network failures are pointed out and the corresponding reactions to these using the proposed OAM architecture are presented.
