Self-Gated Rectified Linear Unit for Performance Improvement of Deep Neural Networks

        Israt Jahan,Md. Faisal Ahmed,Md. Osman Ali,Yeong Min Jang 한국통신학회 2023 ICT Express Vol.9 No.3

This technical paper proposes an activation function, self-gated rectified linear unit (SGReLU), to achieve high classification accuracy, low loss, and low computational time. Vanishing gradient problem, dying ReLU, noise vulnerability are also resolved in our proposed SGReLU function. SGReLU’s performance is evaluated on MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, and Imagenet datasets and compared with seven highly effective activation functions. We obtained that the proposed SGReLU outperformed other activation functions in most cases in VGG16, Inception v3, and ResNet50. In VGG16 and Inception v3, it achieved an accuracy of 90.87% and 95.01%, respectively, exceeding other functions with the second-fastest computing time in these networks.

Combined inhibition of STAT and Notch signalling effectively suppresses tumourigenesis by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation, migration and invasion in glioblastoma cells

Israt Jahan Tulip,김성옥,김은정,김재봉,이재용,김형기,김성찬 한국통합생물학회 2021 Animal cells and systems Vol.25 No.3

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain cancer and this is due to cancer cells being apoptosis-resistant and having increased cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis properties. Previous studies have indicated both STAT and Notch pathways being important for initiation and progression in GBM. In this work, we first studied the effects of STAT inhibitors on Notch signalling using small molecule STAT inhibitors. It was observed that STAT inhibitors surprisingly activated Notch signalling by inducing NICD and Notch target genes in GBM cells. Thus, we aimed to combine STAT inhibitor treatment with a Notch pathway inhibitor and study effects on GBM tumourigenesis. STAT5 inhibitor (Pimozide) and STAT3 inhibitor (S3I- 201) were individually used in combination with γ-secretase inhibitor (DAPT), an inhibitor of Notch signalling, in a panel of GBM cells for cell proliferation and epithelial plasticity changes. Compared with single-agent treatments, combinatorial treatments with the STAT and Notch inhibitors significantly increased apoptosis in the treated cells, impairing cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. These findings suggest that concurrent blocking of STAT and Notch signalling pathways could provide added therapeutic benefit for the treatment of glioblastoma.

The conventional source of medicinal plants is an important way for daily curative uses in rural area throughout Bangladesh. Folk medicinal specialists or Kavirajes, assume an indispensable part in a medicinal services arrangement of both provincial and urban populace of the nation. It is vital to conduct broad meetings of individual Kavirajes of an area to get the overall status of medicinal plants. A survey was accomplished in the rustic territory of Atibazaar, Keraniganj Upazila, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This investigation has uncovered a sum of 38 plants out of which 25 plants were identifed, which belongs to 21 families. Whole plants and/or plant parts, like leaves, stems, barks, roots, fowers, fruits, seeds and wood were usually used by Kavirajes for the treatment of diferent illnesses. Leaves (84%) were the most oftentimes used plant parts, trailed by roots (52%), fruits (16%) stems and barks (16%), entire plants (12%), seeds (12%), blossoms (8%) and wood (4%). Add up to 30 diverse individual illnesses professed to be restored by plant parts including respiratory tract disorders (asthma, cough, whooping cough, bronchitis), fever, gastrointestinal disorders (constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood dysentery, fatulence), arthritis, pain, headache, irregular menstruation, piles, tooth infections, whitening teeth, diabetes, skin diseases, acne, insect, animals and reptiles bites, urinary tract disorders, infammation and nervousness. Several uses of the plants could be validated by available literature review. It is expected that other plants used for treatment of various diseases by the Kavirajes can be subjected for further bio-activity and phytochemical studies, which prompts disclosure of new medications.

Application of transform software for downscaling global climate model EdGCM results in north-eastern Bangladesh

        Fahmida Ishaque,Israt Jahan Ripa,Altaf Hossain,Abdur Rashid Sarker,Gazi Tamiz Uddin,Hafizur Rahman,Joyshankar Baidya 대한환경공학회 2021 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.26 No.1

Downscaling is a state-of-the-art technique to generate fine-resolution climate change prediction and an obvious tool for forecasting future climate scenarios for many data-scarce areas like Bangladesh. The Educational Global Climate Model (EdGCM) predicts numerically and its performance was not evaluated for Bangladesh earlier. Due to this reason, an attempt has been made to apply a new geostatistical approach with the help of transform software to downscale EdGCM for identifying the trend of surface air temperature at the Sylhet district. Both Doubled_CO₂ and Global_Warming_01 are simulated from EdGCM and maps are generated to depict global temperature variations. Downscaling is applied to the outputs from Doubled_CO₂ scenario. Percent of bias (PBIAS), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and the ratio of root mean square error to the standard deviation of measured data (RSR) values are satisfactory and acceptable. The trend analysis was performed using the Mann-Kendall Trend test and Sen’s slope estimator. Temperature changes are significant for both downscaled and observed results of p-value which is less than alpha = 0.05. Mann-Kendall Z tests for annual downscaled and IPCC during (2006-2020) show a positive trend. Downscaled predicted annual average temperature (simulations by Doubled_CO₂) for 2020 is 21.67˚C for the Sylhet district.

Preparation of microporous activated carbon and its modification for arsenic removal from water

Mohammad Asadullah,Israt Jahan,Mohammad Boshir Ahmed,Pasilatun Adawiyah,Nur Hanina Malek,Mohammad Sahedur Rahman 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.3

Arsenic removal from water was investigated using activated carbon. The chemical activated carbon(CAC) prepared using H3PO4 from jute stick largely featured micropore structure with surface functionalgroups, while meso- and macropore structures were mainly developed in physical activated carbon(PAC). The CAC and PAC reduced arsenic concentration to 45 and 55 mg L-1, respectively, from100 mg L-1 while iron-loaded CAC reduced to 3 mg L-1, which is lower than the upper permissible limit(10 mg L-1). The micropore structure of CAC along with complexation affinity of iron species towardsarsenic species attributed to enhanced separation of arsenic.

        ( Kawsar Ahmed ),( Papia Jahan ),( Israt Nadia ),( Farzana Ahmed ),( Abdullah Al Emran ) 대한폐경학회 2016 대한폐경학회지 Vol.22 No.1

Objectives: Every physical abnormal criterion has an impact on the health. Late menopause causes different physiological problems which alike early menopause. The research interest is associated with both early and late menopausal women of Bangladesh as only few menopausal studies available in South East Asia especially in Bangladesh. The aims of this study are not only to assess the symptoms of menopausal abnormality but also to determine the impact of these symptoms on the quality of life (QOL) of the female society in Bangladesh. Methods: Data mining techniques are used to rank the 22 factors (conducted with questionnaire) commonly associated with menopause. Among the participants menstruation that stops before 45 years was considered as early menopausal status and after 50 years as late menopausal. The mean of age and mean length of time in years, since menopause for all participants were 61.55±10.7 and 14.13±11.17, respectively. Recorded data indicated 67% were early menopausal women and 33% were late menopausal women. Results: Results indicated that feeling tired or lacking in energy and dizziness (83%) and depression (82%) have worst impact on QOL among all factors, respectively. The next prevalent symptoms included hot flashes (64%), osteoporosis (72%), sweating at night (63%), concentration problem (75%), irritability (63%), feeling tense (77%), headache (66%). However, less frequent factors included breathing problems (33%), loss of feeling (31%), coherent heart disease (13%) and type2 diabetics (9%). Conclusion: Our study indicates that early menopausal women are facing more physiological problems than the late menopausal women on their QOL. (J Menopausal Med 2016;22:39-46)

Nazim Uddin Emon,Israt Jahan,Mohammed Aktar Sayeed 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2020 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.20 No.3

The study aimed to report in vitro thrombolytic and in vivo anti-nociceptive activity of methanolic extract of Caesalpinia digyna (MECD) followed by in silico PASS prediction, ADME analysis with toxicity and molecular docking study of antinociception (Cox-1, Cox-2) and thrombolytic (Tissue plasminogen activator). The clot lysis of human blood for thrombolytic study, acetic acid induced writing and formalin-induced licking in mice at several doses (50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, b.w.; p.o.) of MECD for anti-inflammatory and antinoceptive activities were performed. In thrombolytic study, a significant 32.78% (P < 0.001) of the blood clot lysis revealed by MECD, while 70.32% (P < 0.001) and 3.84% were yields for positive control (streptokinase) and negative control (saline water), respectively. MECD developed a significant dose-dependent antinociception in acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing experiment while the 400 mg/kg exhibited maximum inhibition (59.27%; P < 0.001). Similarly at comparable dose concentrations, MECD produced significant (P < 0.001) dose-dependent activity in both neurogenic and inflammatory which was generated by intraplantar injections of formalin (2.5%, 20 μL/paw). In PASS prediction, isolated compounds caesalpinine A and caesalpinine C exhibited potential thrombolytic and antinociceptive activity followed by Lipinski rule for drug—like property where the compounds found to be effective in molecular docking study. The current finding suggesting MECD have potential thrombolytic and anti-nociceptive activity.
