        Prototyping Training Program in Immersive Virtual Learning Environment with Head Mounted Displays and Touchless Interfaces for Hearing-Impaired Learners

        The purpose of the study was to identify key design features of virtual reality with head-mounted displays (HMD) and touchless interface for the hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing learners. The virtual reality based training program was aimed to help hearing-impaired learners in machine operating learning, which requires spatial understanding to operate. We developed an immersive virtual learning environment prototype with an HMD (Oculus Rift) and a touchless natural user interface (Leap Motion) to identify the key design features required to enhance virtual reality for the hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing learners. Two usability tests of the prototype were conducted, which revealed that several features in the system need revision and that the technology presents an enormous potential to help hearing-impaired learners by providing realistic and immersive learning experiences. After the usability tests of hearing-impaired students` exploring the 3D virtual space, interviews were conducted, which also established that further revision of the system is needed, which would take into account the learners` physical as well as cognitive characteristics.

        동·서양 문화 극복 차원에서 살펴본 윤이상 음악의 정체성

        윤이상 음악의 음악 철학을 간단히 살펴본 후, 중요 연구 자료들을 토대 로그의 음악이 동양 철학사상 즉, 한국 전통음악에 그 기반을 두고 있다는 사항을 그의 중요 작곡 기법 상에서 살펴보았다. 다음으로는 동·서양의 융화를 추구하는 예술 행위 면에서 드뷔시 음악 특성을 윤이상의 음악과 비교해 봄으로써 그 두 작곡가의 작품 정체성을 동·서양 문화 극복 차원상에서 비교, 고찰해 보았다. 이와 같은 맥락으로 몇몇 동·서양 현대 음악 작곡가들의 작품 성향과 이 종 문화 극복 사항을 간단히 살펴봄으로써 윤이상 음악이 현대 음악 역사에서 어떠한 역할을 담당했는지도 살펴보았다. 결론적으로 위 사항을 동·서양의 문화 결속 농도에 따라 작곡가들의 음악 정체성을 두 가지 이론으로 즉, -‘융화형’과 ‘복합형’- 윤이상의 음악 정체성과 비교 검토해 보았다. 더 나아가 작곡가들의 음악 정체성도 음악 사회학적으로 생각해 보았는데 이러한 고찰을 통해 한국 전통음악과 서양 현대음악의 결속이라는 차원에서의 작곡 미학상의 문제점과 남겨진 과제도 추출해 보고자 했다. This work deals with questions of interculturality and cultural identity of an East Asian composer's, Isang Yun’s, music. Firstly, it focuses on the philosophy and thought of Isang Yun, in which it is trying to observe his technique and aesthetics of composition from an intercultural perspective, and through questions of cultural identity and authenticity in his compositions. By comparing the music of French composer Claude Debussy to the one of Isang Yun, in the context of interculturality, one should try to view the cultural differences of Debussy's music and that of Yun’s through the questions of cultural identity. In the same way, contemplate a Chinese composer’s, Chou Wen-chung’s, and a Japanese composer’s, Toru Takemitsu’s, music as those of East Asian provenance. Finally, it seems that these composers operate within the integration/ subjugation tension field, to result in a dominant discourse, and ultimately in hybridization, defined as a balanced coexistence of multiple discourses. This field of tension, moreover, cannot be separated from the already mentioned questions of cultural identity and authenticity. However, the scholarly comprehension of the western musical's acceptance of the eastern culture discloses a strong contrast. For this reason, culture must be viewed from both standpoints, “etic” and “emic”.

        본 논문에서는 디지털 게임의 학습적 효과에 대해 알아보기 위해 게임에서 이루어지는 암묵적 학습과 교육현장에서 이루어지는 명시적 학습 사이에 어떤 관련이 있는지를 살펴보았다. 게임과 학습과의 관계를 실증적으로 분석하기 위한 예비 실험 단계로, 상용게임 '포트리스'가 연구를 위해 분석, 사용되었다. 연구에서는 '포트리스' 게임을 플레이하는 패턴이 게임 플레이어의 포물선 운동에 관한 암묵적 지식의 형성에 어떤 영향을 주는지 확인하였다. This study investigated the relationship between implicit knowledge developed through digital game experiences and explicit knowledge learned from formal learning settings to address the effects of digital game on learning. Commercial computer game. Fortress, was used for the analysis in this exploratory study. With this game, how game play patterns affect players' implicit knowledge construction was examined.

      • 디지털 게임이 명시적 학습에 미치는 긍정적인 영향

        본 연구는 과학 교육에서 오락용 디지털 게임 플레이 경험이 명시적 학습에 어떻게 영향을 주는지 확인하고자 한다. 연구를 위해 60 명의 학생들을 대상으로 실험을 진행하였다. 연구 결과 게임 내용에 대한 지식을 사용하는 것은 게임 플레이와 명시적 지식에 대한 학습 사이의 유의미한 매개변수가 되는 것으로 확인되었으며, 사전 지식과 명시적 지식에 대한 학습 사이에도 유의미한 매개변수가 되는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 게임 플레이 속도는 게임 내용에 대한 지식을 사용하는 것과 부적인 관계가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 게임플레이를 할 때 게임 플레이어가 게임에서 필요한 판단에 시간을 더 사용할 경우 게임 내용에 대한 지식을 더 고려하게 되고 그것이 게임에 내재된 명시적 지식에 대한 암묵적 지식을 형성하기 때문이라고 볼 수 있다. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of how entertainment game play experiences affect explicit learning, especially in science education. For this, sixty undergraduate students were recruited to participate in an hour long experiment. The results indicated that the game knowledge use was found to be significant mediator between the game play and explicit knowledge learning, and also prior knowledge and explicit knowledge learning. In addition, the game play speed was negatively related with the game knowledge use. From the result, it was implied that implicit knowledge developed the use of game knowledge when taking more time to make a game decision has a positive effect on explicit knowledge learning.

        A Case Study of Equitable Access to Quality Technology Uses in a Low-Resourced Rural Elementary School

        본 연구의 목적은 농촌 지역의 자원과 테크놀로지가 부족한 초등학교 1인 학급 환경에서 교사의 테크놀로지 활용이 학습의 향상에 어떤 도움을 주는지에 관한 질적 연구를 통해 수업 설계를 위한 시사점을 도출하는 데 있다. 연구 참여자는 초등학교 5학년 학생 1인과 교사 1인이었으며 교사 및 학생 인터뷰와 교실 수업 관찰, 학생 일지 등의 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 연구 결과 자원과 테크놀로지가 부족할 뿐 아니라 1인 학급 상황의 한계에도 불구하고, 기존 도구의 창의적 활용과 다양한 온라인 테크놀로지를 활용함으로써, 개별 학습자의 요구와 수준에 맞는 적응적 학습의 제공, 다른 지역 학생과의 협력학습, 교육과정의 재설계 등 학습향상을 위한 다양한 교수전략을 통해 디지털격차를 극복하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 자원과 예산부족, 학생 수 경감에 따른 농촌 지역 학교의 위기에서 새로운 대안과 효과적 학습경험 제공의 가능성을 제시하고 있다. The aim of this study was to describe how a teacher used technologies to improve underserved student’s learning in a low-resourced rural elementary classroom and provide implications for teachers’ use of technology. The in-depth case study was conducted in a one-student classroom setting that isolated the fifth grader from social and collaborative learning opportunities. The qualitative data was collected in forms of classroom observation field notes, teacher interviews, student interviews and student’s reflection journals. Findings are as follows: First, technology partakes an import role in a one-student classroom to support student’s collaborative learning. Second, to overcome a digital divide, the teacher created a technology-enhanced environment with alternative methods of her own and supplemented teacher-created resources. Third, the teacher used technologies to support adaptive instruction based on student’s needs.

        Long-term efficacy of recombinant human growth hormone therapy in short-statured patients with Noonan syndrome

        Purpose: Noonan syndrome (NS) is characterized by short stature, heart anomalies, developmental delays, dysmorphic features, cryptorchidism, and coagulation defects. Several studies reported the short-term effects of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment on the improvement of height. This study was performed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of rhGH in children with NS in Korea. Methods: This study included 15 prepubertal NS children who received rhGH subcutaneously at a dose of 50–75 μg/kg/day for 6 days a week for at least >3 years. Preand posttreatment data, such as height, weight, bone age, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) levels, were collected every 6 months. Results: Chronologic age and bone age at the start of treatment were 7.97±1.81 and 5.09±2.12 years, respectively. Height standard deviation score (SDS) was increased from –2.64±0.64 to –1.54±1.24 years after 3 years (P<0.001). Serum IGF-1 SDS levels were elevated from –1.28±1.03 to –0.10±0.94 (P<0.001). Height SDS was more increased in subjects without PTPN11 mutations compared to those with mutations after 3 years (P=0.012). However, the other parameters, including bone age, IGF-1 SDS, and IGFBP-3 SDS, were not significantly different between patients with and without PTPN11 mutations. Conclusion: Although this study included a relatively small number of patients, long-term rhGH therapy in NS patients was safe and effective at improving height, growth velocity, and serum IGF-1 levels, in accordance with previous studies. However, the meticulous monitoring of potential adverse events is still needed because of high dose of rhGH and preexisting hyperactivity of RAS-MAPK pathway. Patients with PTPN11 mutations demonstrated a decreased response to rhGH therapy compared to those without mutations.

      • eIF2α is a novel O-GlcNAcylated protein under ER stress condition

        O-GlcNAcylation is highly involved in cellular stress responses including the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. However, it is largely unknown which component(s) of the unfolded protein response (UPR) is directly regulated by O-GlcNAcylation. In this study, eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (eIF2α), a major branch of the UPR, was O-GlcNAcylated at Ser 219, Thr 239, and Thr 241. Upon ER stress, eIF2α is phosphorylated at Ser 51 by PERK and this inhibits global translation initiation, except for that of specific mRNAs that induce stress-responsive genes such as CHOP. Hyper-O-GlcNAcylation hindered phosphorylation of eIF2α at Ser 51. The level of O-GlcNAcylation of eIF2α was changed by DTT dependent on its phosphorylation at Ser 51. Point mutation of the O-GlcNAcylation sites of eIF2α increased its phosphorylation at Ser 51 and CHOP expression and resulted in increased apoptosis upon ER stress. This O-GlcNAcylation of eIF2α was reproduced in thiamet-G-injected mouse liver. In conclusion, proper regulation of O-GlcNAcylation and phosphorylation of eIF2α is important to maintain cellular homeostasis upon ER stress.

        The Effects of Egocentric Distance and Screen Size on Virtual Presence: Implications for the Design of Virtual Reality Environments in Large- Screen Displays

        This study examined the effects of egocentric distance and screen size on learners’ perceived virtual presence in a virtual reality environment with a large-screen display. Sixty-four undergraduate students participated in the study, which used a 3×2 randomized-block factorial design with repeated measures. Two independent variables were included: 1) egocentric distance, or the physical distance between the viewer's position and a screen display, and 2) screen size, or different screen heights with fixed width. Learners’ perceived virtual presence, comprising involvement, spatial presence, and realness, was the dependent variable. Results showed that egocentric distance had significant effects on virtual presence, while screen size had none. A detailed discussion and implications are provided.

      • 테트라싸이클린에 대한 올리고뉴클레오타이드를 기반으로 한 두-자리 면역분석법

        Oligonucleotide-based two-site immunometric assay was performed for determination of TC in milk. A 76mer-DNA TC aptamer was utilized as a capture binder, and three complementary oligonucleotides (76, 37 and 36mer) were used as detector probes (1, 2 and 3), respectively. Aptamers are functional single-stranded oligonucleotides (ssDNA or RNA), which are selected in vitro by SELEX process. And aptamer binds to a specific target molecule, from small molecules to proteins, with selectivity and high affinity. Various assay conditions has been optimized and validated between aptamer and each probe. The results observed were quite different from the ones which we had expected on normal two-site immunometric assay. A dose-response curve observed with probe(1) and probe(2), respectively, shows the maximum absorbance on low concentration of TC and minimum absorbance with high concentration of TC. Also, there is no absorbance change according to the concentration of TC with probe(3). In this regard, we supposed that aptamer and probe could make duplex by hybridization. And if capture aptamer binds TC, the probe would not be able to bind TC but could make duplex with free aptamer. Also this method gives 4.79 × 10 -10 M of LOD in optimized condition with probe(1); Absorbance = - 0.0351 × log[TC] + 0.8666, (R 2 =0.9704) in milk. From these results, a newly proposed oligonu-cleotide-based two-site immunometric assay is expected to become a novel method for the determination of TCs in contaminated milk. In addition, a binding site of 76mer-DNA aptamer was identified indirectly.
