Background/aims

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are a spectrum of diseases that cause an acute vesiculobullous reaction in the skin and mucous membranes. The occurrence of these diseases is associated with various drugs, a large proportion of which is comprised cold medicines (CM). We try to investigate the association between human leucocyte antigen (HLA) class I genes and CM-related SJS/TEN (CM-SJS/TEN) with severe ocular complications (SOC) in the Korean population.

Methods

This multicentre case-control study enrolled 40 Korean patients with CM-SJS/TEN with SOC and 120 age-matched and sex-matched Korean healthy volunteers between January 2012 and May 2014. HLA genotyping was performed using PCR followed by hybridisation with sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes.

Results

The carrier frequency and gene frequency of HLA-A*02:06 were 37.5 % and 20.0 %, respectively, in patients, and 16.7 % and 9.6 %, respectively, in controls (p=0.018). The carrier frequency of HLA-C*03:04 was 30 % in patients and 10.8 % in controls, and gene frequency of HLA-C*03:04 was 15 % in patients and 5.4 % in controls (p=0.003). The carrier frequency and gene frequency of HLA-C*03:03 were 2.5 % and 1.3 %, respectively, in patients, and 20 % and 10.4 %, respectively, in controls (p=0.006).

Conclusions

As per our results, we suggest that HLA-A*02:06 and HLA-C*03:04 might be positive markers for CM-SJS/TEN with SOC, and HLA-C*03:03 might be an indicator of protection against CM-SJS/TEN with SOC in the Korean population.

Exogenous expression of ANO9 in PANC-1 cells significantly increased cell proliferation in cell cultures and in mice. In contrast, knockdown of ANO9 in AsPC-1, BxPC-3, and Capan-2 cells strongly inhibited cell proliferation. Mechanistic analysis suggested that physical association of ANO9 with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) underlies ANO9-induced cell proliferation. Knockdown of ANO9 augmented the effects of the EGFR inhibitor and the cytotoxic agent on pancreatic cancer cell proliferation. In addition, high ANO9 expression is a poor prognostic factor in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Conclusions:

The ANO9/TMEM16J appears to be a clinically useful prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer and a potential therapeutic target.

The Role of Social Capital in Shaping Policy Non-compliance for Chhaupadi Practice in Nepal
Miyang Jun,Ikhyun Jang 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2018 Asian Women Vol.34 No.3
Chhaupadi is a Nepalese custom that prohibits women from entering the house and participating in family activities during their menstruation period. The Nepalese Supreme Court outlawed chhaupadi in 2005 and the parliament has recently passed a bill to criminalize the practice. However, the decision has not ensured compliance, as the practice is still widely upheld in many regions in Nepal. Previous studies have attempted to explain behaviors of policy non-compliance with the roles played by social capital. It has been argued that a group with a high level of bonding social capital, represented by the level of solidarity within the group, may build its own belief system and become an obstacle to national governance. This paper examines whether the behaviors of policy non-compliance are associated with the social capital the community possesses. It uses a survey targeting over 400 local residents in Tikapur, a local community of Southeastern Nepal where half of the residents follow the practice. This study employs ordered logit regression to analyze the effect of social capital on individuals’ perceptions of chhaupadi. The results suggest that bonding social capital is associated with positive perspectives toward the practice and therefore it is more likely to shape non-compliant behaviors to a policy that prohibits the practice of chhaupadi.

It was investigated that the dielectric properties of ferroelectric materials using PZT-5A and PZT thin films. PZT-5A was 20mm diameters, 0.71mm 0.51mm and 0.41mm thickness respectively and having c-axis preferred orientation. Electrodes(Al) were deposited by evaporation method. PZT thin film was deposited on Pt/SiO₂/Si substrate by RF magnetron sputtering method and annealed at 750°C with RTA. Dielectric constants were measured automatically by computer measuring system. Dielectric constants were changed rapidly from 817 to 888 in 0.41mm thickness PZT-5A, 823 to 890 in 0.5lmm and 822 to 839 in 0.71mm as the electric field grown. In the case of PZT thin film, dielectric constants were changed from 724 to 1173 in 4500Å thickness, 721 to 1204 in 5500 Å thickness and 811 to 1407 in 7000Å thickness.
Comparison of Anterior Segment Measurements with a New Multifunctional Unit and Five Other Devices
Bo Yi Kim,Ikhyun Jun 대한안과학회 2022 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.36 No.4
Purpose: To evaluate the clinical availability of a multifunctional ocular biometric unit, MR-6000, for simultaneous keratometry, tonometry, topography, and pachymetry evaluation, and compare anterior segment measurements with five other devices: autokeratometer (KR-1), Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam HR), swept-source optical coherence tomography (IOLMaster 700), Placido disk scanning-slit topography (Orbscan II), and noncontact tonometry (FT-1000). Methods: Thirty eyes from thirty patients who visited Severance Hospital for cataract surgery were examined using MR- 6000 and the other devices. The mean keratometry, central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW) distance, and intraocular pressure (IOP) values were compared. Repeated measures analysis of variance, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman plot were used to assess the correlation and agreement between devices. Results: Thirty eyes of thirty patients were evaluated. Statistically significant differences in mean keratometry between MR- 6000, KR-1, Pentacam HR, and IOLMaster 700 were not observed (p > 0.05). All five devices, including Orbscan II, had almost perfect agreement in measuring keratometry (ICC > 0.80, p < 0.05). CCT measured by MR-6000 was significantly different from that of Pentacam HR and Orbscan II measurements (p < 0.05) but correlated with that of Pentacam HR and Orbscan II measurements (ICC > 0.60, p < 0.05). The WTW distance measured by MR-6000 was not significantly different from that measured by IOLMaster 700 but was different from that measured by Orbscan II. IOP measured by MR-6000 was not correlated with FT-1000. Conclusions: Keratometric values obtained through MR-6000 can be used interchangeably with other devices based on good correlation and agreement. However, the CCT, WTW, and IOP values were not interchangeable with a single multifunctional unit for cataract surgery preoperative examination.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to compare Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates between spherical and aspheric intraocular lenses. Methods: The present retrospective study enrolled patients who received cataract surgery by a single surgeon between March 1, 2006 and October 31, 2009. Patients included in the study were implanted with SA60AT spherical intraocular lenses (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA, 66 eyes), SN60AT spherical intraocular lenses (Alcon, 48 eyes; a total of 114 eyes), or SN60WF aspheric intraocular lenses (Alcon, 187 eyes). The Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates were compared between the two groups 6 months after the operation. Ten patients who were implanted with a spherical intraocular lens in one eye and an aspheric intraocular lens in the contralateral eye were analyzed separately. Results: Nd:YAG capsulotomy was performed in 2 of 114 eyes (1.8%) in the spherical intraocular lens group and 7 of 187 eyes (3.2%) in the aspheric intraocular lens group; no significant difference was found (p = 0.359). Among the 10 patients who were implanted with 2 different intraocular lenses, Nd:YAG capsulotomy was performed in only 1 eye in the aspheric intraocular lens group; no significant difference was found (p = 0.500). Conclusions: The design of the intraocular lens, especially the shape of the posterior optic, does not influence the rate of Nd:YAG capsulotomy. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2011;52(4):414-419
