Efficiency and Revenue in Asymmetric Auctions

( Kyungmin Kim ),( Youngwoo Koh ) 한국경제학회 2019 The Korean Economic Review Vol.35 No.2

We study the efficiency and revenue properties of first- and second-price auctions in an environment where bidders’ values are drawn from different binary distributions. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for a first-price auction to induce an efficient allocation. The condition reveals the source of allocative inefficiencies in asymmetric firstprice auctions. We further show that the seller’s revenue is higher in a second-price auction than it is in a first-price auction whenever allocations in the two auction formats are efficient. We highlight how the difference in different bidder types’ beliefs induces the results.

The Korean Diasporic Identity in the Context of K-Pop Consumption: The Case of Young Female Diaspora Members in Kazakhstan

HOYOUN KOH,KYUNGMIN BAEK 서울대학교 사회발전연구소 2020 Journal of Asian Sociology Vol.49 No.1

The Korean Wave, or Hallyu, is no longer simply a new phenomenon or an unusual surge in the cultural market. We argue that it is instead a cultural trend and environment with substantial influence among youth outside of Korea, and that it has the transformative power of (re)shaping Korean identity among young diaspora Koreans. Drawing upon the literature of diasporic identity construction, we explore the impact of the Korean Wave on the construction of Korean identity among Korean-Kazakhstani youth. The present article examines how young Korean Kazakhstanis interpret K-pop in relation with their self-identity as Korean. Our qualitative analysis of a focus group exhibits that the current trend of K-pop in Kazakhstan not only involves the consumption of a cultural product, but also serves as stimuli for young diaspora Koreans to reflect upon their identity. Using Cohen’s (2004) framework for diasporic identity, we find that Korean-Kazakhstani youths interpret K-pop in a universal sense as well as in cultural and biological terms. The popularity of K-pop among local consumers in Kazakhstan has a transformative influence on young members of the Korean diaspora, as the Korean Wave has positively changed people’s perceptions of Korea in general.

      • Dynamic Channel Adaptation for IP Based Split Spectrum Femto/Macro Cellular Systems

PARK, Kyungmin,KOH, Chungha,YOON, Kangjin,KIM, Youngyong The Institute of Electronics, Information and Comm 2011 IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS - Vol.eb94 No.3

<P>In femto/macro cellular networks, the stability and fairness problems caused by the unplanned and random characteristic of femtocells must be solved. By applying queueing theory in IP based femto/macro cellular networks, we found the stability condition, and described two kinds of cell section policies of users. As a main contribution, we provided the adaptive channel distribution algorithm which minimizes the average packet sojourn time at transmitting systems and keeps the whole systems stable and fair among cells. Through experiments in various environments, we analyzed the influence of channel reuse factor, cell selection policies, and the number of femtocells on system performance.</P>

Osteochondrosis dissecans in glenoid cavity of Korean War casualty’s scapula

        Hyejin Lee,Kyungmin Koh,Minho Cha,Tan Namkoong,Sang Joon Park,Doo Hee Lee,Ji Eun Kim,Dong Hoon Shin 대한해부학회 2021 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.54 No.2

Since the first description of this disease in 1887, there are rare reports on osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) found in the glenoid cavity by way of anthropological studies. During an excavation project for recovery of the remains of Korean War casualties, a skeletonized soldier was found inside a cave fort at the Arrowhead Ridge of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), South Korea. In our recovery and examination of a Korean War casualty in DMZ, we identified a possible OCD in the individual’s glenoid cavity of a right-sided scapula by radiological analysis and computed tomography reconstruction. This is a rare case of scapular OCD discovered in an archaeologically investigated skeleton.

Effect of Intrathecal Baclofen Pump on Scoliosis in Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Meta-Analysis

        Soolim Lee,Cheolhwan Hyun,Kyungmin KIM,Hyo Eun Kwon,Minwoo Woo,Seong-Eun Koh 대한재활의학회 2023 Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine Vol.47 No.1

Objective To systematically review the effect of intrathecal baclofen pump insertion in children with cerebral palsy (CP) with respect to scoliosis. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases up to June 2022. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) studies with a quantitative study design; (2) studies with a study group of children with CP; (3) studies comparing scoliosis in children with and without an intrathecal baclofen pump; and (4) studies with Cobb’s angle as a parameter. Results Of the 183 studies found, four studies, all of which were retrospective comparative studies, met the aforementioned inclusion criteria. All studies were homogeneous (I2=0%, p=0.53) and intrathecal baclofen pump insertion accelerated the progression of scoliosis (standard mean difference=0.27; 95% confidence interval=0.07–0.48). Conclusion Intrathecal baclofen pumps have been used to alleviate spasticity in children with CP, thus aiding their daily activities and movements. However, their advantages and disadvantages should be reviewed after sufficient time considering the pumps’ negative effect on the course of scoliosis.

Long-term Results after Bilateral Implantation of Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lenses with Mini-Monovision

        Jeongmin Kim,Taeeun Kim,Hungwon Tchah,Kyungmin Koh 대한안과학회 2024 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.38 No.2

Purpose: To assess long-term clinical results following bilateral Tecnis Symfony ZXR00 intraocular lens implantation with mini-monovision. Methods: The medical records of cataract patients who underwent bilateral implantation of ZXR00 with intended mini-monovision (target refraction of –0.3 diopters [D] in dominant eye and –0.6 D in nondominant eye) between April 2019 and March 2021 were assessed. Postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance VA (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate VA (UIVA), uncorrected near VA (UNVA), and rate of spectacle dependence for near distance were investigated at 3 months and 2 years after surgery. Results: This study included 61 patients (122 eyes) with average age of 61.8 ± 7.7 years. At 2 years postoperatively, binocular logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution UDVA, UIVA, UNVA, and CDVA were 0.086 ± 0.094, 0.056 ± 0.041, 0.140 ± 0.045, and 0.012 ± 0.024, respectively. The monocular manifest refraction spherical equivalent was –0.31 ± 0.38 in the dominant eye and –0.53 ± 0.47 in the nondominant eye at 3 months postoperatively, and –0.38 ± 0.43 in the dominant eye and –0.61 ± 0.54 in the nondominant eye at 2 years postoperatively. Eight out of 61 patients (13.1%) needed glasses 3 months after surgery, and nine out of 61 patients (14.8%) needed glasses 2 years after surgery. Conclusions: The bilateral implantation of ZXR00s with mini-monovision allows for a good VA at wide range of distance from far to near, thereby resulting in high rate of spectacle independence. These results have held up well even after 2 years after surgery.

Combined Phototherapeutic Keratectomy and Peripheral Anterior Stromal Puncture for the Treatment of Recurrent Corneal Erosion Syndrome

        송미연,정재림,김국영,황규연,Young A Kwon,Sang Wroul Song,김병엽,Kyungmin Koh 대한안과학회 2020 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.34 No.4

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of the combined phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) and peripheral anterior stromalpuncture (ASP) compared with that of PTK alone in patients with recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES). Methods: The medical records of 25 patients (25 eyes) who underwent combined treatment of PTK and peripheral ASP forRCES from March 2016 to May 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty-three patients (23 eyes) treated with PTK alonefrom March 2015 to February 2016 served as a control group. All surgeries were performed by a single surgeon. This retrospectiveclinical study comprised 48 patients (48 eyes) who were followed up for more than 18 months. Clinical records ofage, sex, laterality, etiology of RCES, and history of recurrence after treatment were evaluated. Results: Twenty-five eyes were treated with combined PTK and ASP, and 23 eyes were treated with PTK only. The meanfollow-up period was 19.63 ± 2.97 and 19.75 ± 6.83 months, respectively. There were no differences in baseline parametersbetween the groups. In the combined treatment group, one patient experienced recurrence 6 months after the surgery. Inthe single treatment group, five patients showed recurrence at 4, 7, 8, 11, and 13 months after the surgery, respectively. Compared to the single treatment group, the combined treatment group showed significantly lower recurrence rate (p < 0.05). All recurred patients required no additional treatment except temporary therapeutic contact lenses and topical lubricants. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that combined treatment of PTK and peripheral ASP is effective in alleviation of symptomsand prevention of recurrence in refractory RCES compared with treatment using PTK alone.

Visual Performance and Optical Quality after Implantation of a New Generation Monofocal Intraocular Lens

        Kyoung Hae Kang,Mi Yeon Song,Kook Young Kim,Kyu-Yeon Hwang,Young-A Kwon,Kyungmin Koh 대한안과학회 2021 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.35 No.2

Purpose: To evaluate the performance of two intraocular lenses (IOLs). The new monofocal IOL using a higher-order asphericoptic (Tecnis Eyhance ICB00) was compared to a standard monofocal IOL (Tecnis monofocal ZCB00) of the identical platformand material. Methods: The medical records of the patients who had undergone cataract surgery with implantation of either the ZCB00or the ICB00 in the dominant eye from March 2020 to August 2020 and with available data from the 3-month visit were reviewed. Subjects with ocular comorbidities or corneal astigmatism greater than 1.00 diopters were excluded. The uncorrectednear, intermediate, distance visual acuity and corrected distance visual acuity were the main outcome measures. Opticalquality parameters measured using an optical quality analysis system, clinical records including age, sex, laterality, oculardominance, and information related to refractory errors was also collected. Parameters related to the refractory errors wereall uniformly based on the Barrett Universal II formula. Results: Of the 197 recruited patients, 111 and 86 were implanted with the ICB00 and ZCB00, respectively. No statisticallysignificant differences in baseline parameters were observed between the two groups. While no statistically significant differencesin distance visual acuity or optical quality were found between the two groups, compared to the ZCB00 group, theICB00 group showed significantly higher intermediate visual acuity (p < 0.001) and near visual acuity (p < 0.05) 3 months postoperatively. Conclusions: ICB00 provided superior intermediate vision and comparable distance performance and photic phenomenacompared to a standard monofocal IOL.
