Curvelet Approach for Deep-sea Sonar Image Denoising, Contrast Enhancement and Fusion
Lu, Huimin,Yamawaki, Akira,Serikawa, Seiichi The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2013 The Journal of International Council on Electrical Vol.3 No.3
Side-scan sonar acquires high quality imagery of the seafloor with very high spatial resolution but poor locational accuracy. However, multi-beam sonar obtains high precision position and underwater depth in seafloor points. In order to fully utilize all information of these two types of sonars, it is necessary to fuse the two kinds of sonar data. This paper gives curvelet transform for enhancing the signals or details in different scales separately. It also proposes a new intensity sonar image fusion method, which is based on curvelet transform. Considering the sonar image forming principle, for the low frequency curvelet coefficients, we use the maximum local energy method to calculate the energy of two sonar images. For the high frequency curvelet coefficients, we take absolute maximum method as a measurement. The main attribute of this paper is: Firstly, the multi-resolution analysis method is well adapted the cured-singularities and point-singularities. It is useful for sonar intensity image enhancement. Secondly, maximum local energy is well performing the intensity sonar images, which can achieve perfect fusion result. The experimental results show that the method can be used in the flat seafloor or the isotropic seabed. Compared with wavelet transform method, this method can get better performance.

In this study, we attempted to establish a culture system for in vitro spermatogenesis from spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) of Bama mini-pig. Dissociated testicular cells from 1-month-old pigs were co-cultured to mimic in vivo spermatogenesis. The testicular cells were seeded in minimum essential medium alpha (a-MEM) supplemented with Knockout serum replacement (KSR). Three-dimensional colonies formed after 10 days of culture. The colonies showed positive staining for SSC-associated markers such as UCHL1, PLZF, THY1, OCT4, Dolichos biflorus agglutinin, and alkaline phosphatase. Induction of SSCs was performed in a-MEM + KSR supplemented with retinoic acid, bone morphogenetic protein 4, activin A, follicle-stimulating hormone, or testosterone. The results showed that STRA8, DMC1, PRM1, and TNP1 were upregulated significantly in the colonies after induction compared to that in testis from 1-month-old pigs, while expression levels of those genes were significantly low compared to those in 2-month-old testis. However, upregulation of ACROSIN was not significant. Replacement of a-MEM and KSR with Iscove’s modified Dulbecco’s medium and fetal bovine serum did not upregulate expression of these genes significantly. These results indicate that SSCs of Bama mini-pig could undergo differentiation and develop to a post-meiotic stage in α-MEM supplemented with KSR and induction factors.

The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of nobiletin on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells. Here, we found that nobiletin could promote adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells in the absence of adipogenic inducers such as insulin, 3-Isobutyl-1-methylxanthine and dexamethasone. In addition, Real time quantitative PCR showed that the expression of adipogenic genes such as CCAAT/enhancer binding proteins, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors-γ and fatty acid-binding protein aP2 were up-regulated in 3T3-L1 cells in the presence of nobiletin. Next, we investigated the role of Akt in the effect of nobiletin on the adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells by LY294002 blocking PI3K/Akt pathway. The experimental results showed that the promotive effect of nobiletin on adipogenesis was attenuated, accompanied by the down-regulation of adipogenic genes expression, after the activity of Akt was inhibited, suggesting that Akt plays an important role in the effect of nobiletin on promoting adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells. Still, the inhibition of Akt pathway by LY294002 was attenuated in the presence of nobiletin. These findings provide a possibility that nobiletin may be a potential candidate agent for stimulating Akt pathway in 3T3-L1 cells.

Viral-encoded microRNAs (miRNAs) play have vital roles in the regulations of virus replications and host immune responses. The results of previous studies have indicated that miRNA clusters are involved in the replication and virulence of the pseudorabies virus (PRV), which may potentially lead to the immune escape or facilitation of PRV replications. This study's previous research revealed that the prv-mirmiR-LLT11a was differentially expressed during PRV infections. The present study's results have demonstrated that the prv-miR-LLT11a could significantly inhibit PRV replications. It was further determined that SLA-1 was the target gene of the prv-miR-LLT11a, and simultaneously, thate overexpression of prv-miR-LLT11a could down-regulate the mRNA and protein levels of SLA-1 in a dose-independent manner. Furthermore, the present study also found observed that the prv-miR-LLT11a canhad also down-regulated the TAP1 expressions. Our findings provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanism involved in on the effects of prv-miR-LLT11a on SLA-1 and TAP1, as well as and its involvement in a potential immune system evasion of PRV.
Analysis of Traffic Splitting Mechanisms for 2D Mesh Sensor Networks
Huimin She,Zhonghai Lu,Axel Jantsch,Li-Rong Zheng,Dian Zhou 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.2 No.3
For many applications of sensor networks, it is essential to ensure that messages are transmitted to their destinations within delay bounds and the buffer size of each sensor node is as small as possible. In this paper, we firstly introduce the system model of a mesh sensor network. Based on this system model, the expressions for deriving the delay bound and buffer requirement bound are presented using network calculus theory. In order to balance traffic load and improve resource utilization, three traffic splitting mechanisms are proposed. And the two bounds are derived in these traffic splitting mechanisms. To show how our method applies to real applications, we conduct a case study on a fresh food tracking application, which monitors the food freshness status in real-time during transportation. The numerical results show that the delay bound and buffer requirement bound are reduced while applying traffic splitting mechanisms. Thus the performance of the whole sensor network is improved with less cost.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is a useful biomarker for cancer metastasis. The blood from a cancer patient is analyzed by a fluorescence microscope. Each case takes a large number of images, which usually have a lot of cell regions. Thus, analyzing the images is hard work for pathologists, and misdiagnosis may happen. In this paper, we develop an automatic CTCs identification method for fluorescence microscopy images. The proposed method consists of three steps. First, we extract cell regions in images using filtering methods. Second, we compute features of each CTC candidate regions. Finally, we identify the CTCs using AdaBoost algorithm. And we analyze the features to know which ones are effective for characterizing CTCs and normal cells. We apply the proposed method to 5040 microscopy images, and evaluate the effectiveness of our method by using leave-one-out cross validation. We achieve a true positive rate of 97.30 [%] and a false positive rate of 12.82 [%].

Recently, consistent container transportation of roads and ships is mainstream of international freight transport. Because of various factors, automation of cargo handling work is required at the container terminal. Various causes are decrement of future labor force population by an increasing trend of container moving amount and declining birthrate and aging population. Therefore, this study presents the relative position of hanger and container measurement technology using Single Shot Multibox Detector (SSD) for the purpose of improvement of cargo handling work efficiency and unmanned container terminal. In the case of undetected by SSD, it will be detected using AKAZE feature. The proposed method is applied to 368 images of container gripping taken by a camera installed in a container crane. As a result, Interaction of Union (IoU) targeted for container gripping is 87.79%, and a detection rate is 94.57%.

In the task of object recognition, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved high performance. In addition, these CNNs are also applied to the field of semantic image segmentation. However, applying the classification models to semantic segmentation tasks has a problem, lack of global context and reduction in resolution. In this work, we propose global context module and high resolution path in order to solve above problems. By simply combining them with an existing classification model (wide residual networks), our methods yield high-accuracy segmentation models. Our proposed approaches produce competitive results, the mean intersection over union (IoU) 67.6% and global accuracy 91.1%, on CamVid test set.
