1945: The End of the War and Its Aftemath

Hans Martin Hinz 한국박물관학회 2005 博物館學報 Vol.- No.8

May 8, 1945. Late in the evening- in Moscow the 9th of May had already begun in a former Wehrmacht officers’ casino in the Berlin villa section of Karlshorst, representatives of the German armed forces sign the unconditional surrender before the victorious Allied powers. The Second World War in Europe has come to an end. This point in time marked one of d1e most incisive and far - reaching events in German and European histOlY, and above and beyond iliis as well. National Socialist Germany had in the preceding years brought suffering to humanity, with well over 50 million victims of murder or casualties of war, with cities destroyed, landscapes ravaged and people uprooted and exiled evelywhere.

Geophysical Investigations of the Grenville Front in Ohio, USA

선우돈,김정우,Don Sunwoo,Hinze William J.,Kim Jeong Woo The Korean Society of Economic and Environmental G 2005 자원환경지질 Vol.38 No.3

Seismic reflection profile analysis, potential field analysis, and potential field modeling using deep seismic reflection, gravity, magnetic, and geological data were performed to better understand the location and nature of the Grenville Front in Ohio, USA. The seismic reflection profile reveals a broad zone of east dipping basement reflectors associated with the Grenville Front in western Ohio and a broad region of west dipping reflectors cutting through the entire crust in eastern Ohio. Potential field analysis indicates that the Grenville Front is characterized by a gravity low, an associated gravity positive and a magnetic high. The results of the gravity and magnetic modeling using seismic data suggest that the lower crust is thickened at the interpreted position of the Grenville Front and high grade metamorphic rocks make up the Grenville Front Tectonic Zone (GFTZ). The gravity low at the Grenville Front is due to the thickened crust, while the magnetic high is due to high grade metamorphic rocks. The gravity high immediately east of the GFTZ in central Ohio is caused by thrusting of high density lower and middle crustal rocks into the upper crust. There is no compelling evidence that this gravity high is related to a Precambrian rift zone as has been suggested in previous studies.

EARLY-TYPE GALAXIES WITH TIDAL DEBRIS AND THEIR SCALING RELATIONS IN THE<i>SPITZER</i>SURVEY OF STELLAR STRUCTURE IN GALAXIES (S4G)

        Kim, Taehyun,Sheth, Kartik,Hinz, Joannah L.,Lee, Myung Gyoon,Zaritsky, Dennis,Gadotti, Dimitri A.,Knapen, Johan H.,Schinnerer, Eva,Ho, Luis C.,Laurikainen, Eija,Salo, Heikki,Athanassoula, E.,Bosma, Al IOP Publishing 2012 The Astrophysical journal Vol.753 No.1

<P>Tidal debris around galaxies can yield important clues on their evolution. We have identified tidal debris in 11 early-type galaxies (T <= 0) from a sample of 65 early types drawn from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S(4)G). The tidal debris includes features such as shells, ripples, and tidal tails. A variety of techniques, including two-dimensional decomposition of galactic structures, were used to quantify the residual tidal features. The tidal debris contributes similar to 3%-10% to the total 3.6 mu m luminosity of the host galaxy. Structural parameters of the galaxies were estimated using two-dimensional profile fitting. We investigate the locations of galaxies with tidal debris in the fundamental plane and Kormendy relation. We find that galaxies with tidal debris lie within the scatter of early-type galaxies without tidal features. Assuming that the tidal debris is indicative of recent gravitational interaction or merger, this suggests that these galaxies have either undergone minor merging events so that the overall structural properties of the galaxies are not significantly altered, or they have undergone a major merging events but already have experienced sufficient relaxation and phase mixing so that their structural properties become similar to those of the non-interacting early-type galaxies.</P>

Biomechanical and histological behavior of zirconia implants: an experiment in the rat

        Kohal, Ralf J.,Wolkewitz, Martin,Hinze, Marc,Han, Jung-Suk,,chle, Maria,Butz, Frank Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2009 Clinical oral implants research Vol.20 No.4

<P>Abstract</P><P>Objective</P><P>This study aimed at evaluating the integration of zirconia implants in a rat femur model.</P><P>Material and methods</P><P>Zirconia implants with two distinct surface topographies were compared with titanium implants with similar topographies. Titanium and zirconia implants were placed into the femurs of 42 male Sprague–Dawley rats. Four groups of implants were utilized: machined zirconia implants, zirconia implants with a rough surface, machined titanium implants, and titanium implants with an electrochemically roughened surface. After a healing period of 28 days, the load-bearing capacity between the bone and the implant surface was evaluated by a push-in test. Additionally, after a healing period of 14 and 28 days, respectively, bone tissue specimens containing the implants were processed and histologically analyzed.</P><P>Results</P><P>The mean mineralized bone-to-implant contact showed the highest values after 14 and 28 days for the rough surfaces (titanium: 36%/45%; zirconia: 45%/59%). Also, the push-in test showed higher values for the textured implant surfaces, with no statistical significance between titanium (34 N) and zirconia (45.8 N).</P><P>Conclusions</P><P>Within the limits of the animal investigation presented, it was concluded that all tested zirconia and titanium implant surfaces were biocompatible and osseoconductive. The presented surface modification of zirconia implants showed no difference regarding the histological and biomechanical results compared with an established electrochemically modified titanium implant surface.</P>

        Nanocomposite Magnetic Materials

        Ludwig Schultz,Alberto Bollero,Axel Handstein,Dietrich Hinz,Karl-Hartmut Muller,Golden Kumar,Juergen Eckert,Oliver Gutfleisch,Anke Kirehner Aru Yan The Korean Powder Metallurgy Institute 2002 한국분말재료학회지 (KPMI) Vol.9 No.6

Recent developments in nanocrystalline and nanocomposite rare earth-transition metal magnets are reviewed and emphasis is placed on research work at IFW Dresden. Principal synthesis methods include high energy ball milling, melt spinning, mold casting and hydrogen assisted methods such as reactive milling and hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination. These techniques are applied to NdFeB-, PrFeB- and SmCo-type systems with the aim to produce high remanence magnets with high coercivity. Concepts of maximizing the energy density in nanostructured magnets by either inducing a texture via anisotropic HDDR or hot deformation or enhancing the remanence via magnetic exchange coupling are evaluated. With respect to high temperature applications melt spun $Sm(Co_{0.74}Fe_{0.1}Cu_{0.12}Zr_{0.04})_{7.5}$ ribbons were prepared, which showed coercivities of up to 0.53 T at 50$0^{\circ}C$. Partially amorphous $Nd_{60}Fe_xCo_{30-x}Al_{10}(0{\leq}x{\leq}30)$ alloys were prepared by copper mold casting. The effect of transition metal content on the glass-forming ability and the magnetic properties was investigated. The $Nd_{60}Co_{30}Al_{10}$ alloy exhibits an amorphous structure shown by the corresponding diffraction pattern. A small substitution of Co by 2.5 at.% Fe results In the formation of Fe-rich crystallites embedded in the Nd-rich amorphous matrix. The Fe-rich crystallites show hard magnetic behaviour at room temperature with a coercivity value of about 0.4 T, relatively low saturation magnetization and a Curie temperature of 500 K.

Identifying kinase dependency in cancer cells by integrating high-throughput drug screening and kinase inhibition data

        Ryall, Karen A.,Shin, Jimin,Yoo, Minjae,Hinz, Trista K.,Kim, Jihye,Kang, Jaewoo,Heasley, Lynn E.,Tan, Aik Choon Oxford University Press 2015 Bioinformatics Vol.31 No.23

<P><B>Motivation:</B> Targeted kinase inhibitors have dramatically improved cancer treatment, but kinase dependency for an individual patient or cancer cell can be challenging to predict. Kinase dependency does not always correspond with gene expression and mutation status. High-throughput drug screens are powerful tools for determining kinase dependency, but drug polypharmacology can make results difficult to interpret.</P><P><B>Results:</B> We developed Kinase Addiction Ranker (KAR), an algorithm that integrates high-throughput drug screening data, comprehensive kinase inhibition data and gene expression profiles to identify kinase dependency in cancer cells. We applied KAR to predict kinase dependency of 21 lung cancer cell lines and 151 leukemia patient samples using published datasets. We experimentally validated KAR predictions of FGFR and MTOR dependence in lung cancer cell line H1581, showing synergistic reduction in proliferation after combining ponatinib and AZD8055.</P><P><B>Availability and implementation:</B> KAR can be downloaded as a Python function or a MATLAB script along with example inputs and outputs at: http://tanlab.ucdenver.edu/KAR/.</P><P><B>Contact:</B> aikchoon.tan@ucdenver.edu</P><P><B>Supplementary information:</B> Supplementary data are available at <I>Bioinformatics</I> online.</P>
