Is There a Need for Bowel Management after Surgery for Isolated Intestinal Malrotation in Children?

Salo, Martin The Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology 2019 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.22 No.5

Purpose: Few studies have reported non-acute long-term morbidity rates in children with intestinal malrotation. The aim of this study was to investigate the rate of constipation in children undergoing Ladd's procedure for isolated intestinal malrotation. Methods: This retrospective study included children aged <15 years who underwent Ladd's procedure for intestinal malrotation between 2001 and 2016. Demographics, presence of volvulus perioperatively, need for bowel resection, short term (<30 days) and long-term complications, including mortality were recorded. Constipation was defined as treatment with laxatives at 1-year follow-up. Results: Of the 43 children included in the study, 49% were boys. The median age at surgery was 28 days (0-5, 293 days). Volvulus occurred in 26 children (60.5%), and bowel resection was required in 4 children (9.3%). Short-term complications categorized as grades II-V according to the Clavien-Dindo classification occurred in 13 children (30.2%). Of these, 5 children (11.6%) required re-operation. Constipation was observed in 9 children (23.7%) at the 1-year follow-up. No difference was observed in the rate of perioperative volvulus between children with and without constipation (44% vs. 65%, p=0.45). Excluding re-operations performed within 30 days after surgery, 3 children (6%) underwent surgery for intestinal obstruction during the study period. Conclusion: Many children undergoing Ladd's procedure require bowel management even at long-term follow-up, probably secondary to constipation. It is important to thoroughly evaluate bowel function at the time of follow-up to verify or exclude constipation, and if treatment of constipation is unsuccessful, these children require evaluation for dysmotility disorders and/or intestinal neuronal dysplasia.

Engaging with the Baby as a Person in Their Own Right: Early Intervention with Parents and Infants

        Frances Thomson-Salo 한국정신분석학회 2012 精神分析 (Psychoanalysis) Vol.23 No.1

This paper reviews and summarizes therapeutic interventions between parents and their babies by observing engagement with babies through psychological holding, communication with them as persons in their own right and pleasurable playfulness in infant-therapist interactions. In light of the fact that the increased capacity of parents in vulnerable families to think reflectively about their infant’s mind is usually a significant therapeutic method, the report suggests that engaging with the infant in the parents’ presence is usually therapeutic as well. It has been reported worldwide that the increase in interventions with infants and parents are effective, when the interactions were made: for individuals and groups; for a short and long term; in the psychodynamic and behavioral manner. Therefore, the task ahead is to further clarify the mechanisms for change. In this paper, we focused on short-term infant-parent psychotherapy by working with parents and infants in the prenatal period. Time pressure sometimes makes this no more than a relational encounter informed by psychoanalytic thinking, such as containment of feelings and thoughts incurred when unconscious conflictual or early implicit meanings distort a parent’s relationships with their baby. While there are cultural differences in views about infants, some of these ideas seem universally applicable, for instance, to the importance of sensitive parenting and attachment.

When a Mother Brings Her Baby to Psychoanalytic Sessions

Frances Thomson-Salo 한국정신분석학회 2013 精神分析 (Psychoanalysis) Vol.24 No.-

In this review paper, the clinical importance of being open to why a mother wishes to bring her baby to analysis is considered as a spectrum of views about the frame and transferential aspects of why a mother shares her sessions are explored. The concept of motherhood as a developmental stage is first outlined, as well as difficulties on the path to motherhood. In discussing the centrality of attending closely to countertransference in following the meanings of the request and the evolving analytic process, the analytic potential of a baby’s presence in a mother’s working through is exquisitely perceptible, highlighting gains in integrating projections and facilitating introjections so that a maternal good object may be more securely internalised and consolidated. A baby’s presence may contribute to a more layered presentation with a mother bringing material that might otherwise be ‘beyond words’. Taken together this suggests that a more traditional view of the frame that a baby should not come to sessions may slow therapeutic gains, and that technique would be informed by viewing the request as developmentally appropriate.

ARRAKIS: atlas of resonance rings as known in the S4G

        Comeró,n, S.,Salo, H.,Laurikainen, E.,Knapen, J. H.,Buta, R. J.,Herrera-Endoqui, M.,Laine, J.,Holwerda, B. W.,Sheth, K.,Regan, M. W.,Hinz, J. L.,Muñ,oz-Mateos, J. C.,Gil de Paz, A.,Men&eac Springer-Verlag 2014 Astronomy and astrophysics Vol.562 No.-

<P>Context. Resonance rings and pseudorings (here collectively called rings) are thought to be related to the gathering of material near dynamical resonances caused by non-axisymmetries in galaxy discs. This means that they are the result of secular evolution processes that redistribute material and angular momentum in discs. Studying them may give clues on the formation and growth of bars and other disc non-axisymmetries. Aims. Our aims are to produce a catalogue and an atlas of the rings detected in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) and to conduct a statistical study of the data in the catalogue. Methods. We traced the contours of rings previously identified and fitted them with ellipses. We found the orientation of bars by studying the galaxy ellipse fits from the S4G pipeline 4. We used the galaxy orientation data obtained by the S4G pipeline 4 to obtain intrinsic ellipticities and orientations of rings and the bars. Results. ARRAKIS contains data on 724 ringed galaxies in the S4G. The frequency of resonance rings in the S4G is of 16 ±1% and 35 ±1% for outer and inner features, respectively. Outer rings are mostly found in Hubble stages −1 ≤T≤ 4. Inner rings are found in a broad distribution that covers the range −1 ≤T≤7. We confirm that outer rings have two preferred orientations, namely parallel and perpendicular to the bar. We confirm a tendency for inner rings to be oriented parallel to the bar, but we report the existence of a significant fraction (maybe as large as 50%) of inner features that have random orientations with respect to the bar. These misaligned inner rings are mostly found in late-type galaxies (T ≥4). We find that the fraction of barred galaxies hosting outer (inner) rings is ~1.7 times (~1.3 times) that in unbarred galaxies. Conclusions. We confirm several results from previous surveys as well as predictions from simulations of resonant rings and/or from manifold flux tube theory. We report that a significant fraction of inner rings in late-type galaxies have a random orientation with respect to the bar. This may be caused by spiral modes that are decoupled from the bar and dominate the Fourier amplitude spectrum at the radius of the inner ring. The fact that rings are only mildly favoured by bars suggests that those in unbarred galaxies either formed because of weak departures from the axisymmetry of the galactic potential or that they are born because of bars that were destroyed after the ring formation.</P>

      • Multiloop Control Strategy for Four-Wire Current Source Active Power Filter

        Sami Pettersson,Mika Salo,Heikki Tuusa 전력전자학회 2007 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.- No.-

Despite the fact that three-wire active power filters have been implemented using both voltage source and current source technology, the research of four-wire current source active power filters has been truly minimal. Only a few topologies have been presented over the years. This paper proposes a four-wire current source active power filter topology for improving the quality of supply in four-wire systems. The proposed topology is controlled using a multiloop control strategy suitable for a single-chip microcontroller implementation. The control strategy combines the load current feedforward connection and the cascaded closed-loop control of the supply currents and the capacitor voltages of the LC-type supply filter. By using the cascaded closed-loop control, the stability of the system can be achieved without the need to overdimension the supply filter. The performance of the proposed system is verified experimentally using a microcontroller controlled four-wire current source active power filter prototype rated for a 5 ㎸A load.

      • Communication with Video Games as a Process of Semiosis

Maletska, Mariia,Ostashchuk, Ivan,Khrypko, Svitlana,Salo, Hanna,Petryshyn, Halyna,Lobanchuk, Olena International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.10

Communication as a process of interpreting signs has always existed in people's life. In post-information society, the communication between a person and a technological system through the specific sign-attaching process becomes widespread. Moreover, it somehow replaces usual communication between people. One of the means of communication in the digital space are video games. They not only play an important role in communication processes, but also are a special case of sign-creating and interpreting. The purpose of the article is to examine video games as a space of sign-based communication between a person and a game as a specific digital system. With the help of general scientific and hermeneutic methodology, the analysis of video games as a post-information society phenomenon which people communicate to has been conducted. The process of semiosis as attaching special meanings to signs has been traced in both manipulating in-game objects and characters and understanding rules of an in-game world.

Generation, characterization, and application in serodiagnosis of recombinant swine vesicular disease virus-like particles

        Wanhong Xu,Melissa Goolia,Tim Salo,Zhidong Zhang,Ming Yang 대한수의학회 2017 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.18 No.-

Swine vesicular disease (SVD) is a highly contagious viral disease that causes vesicular disease in pigs. The importance of the disease is due to its indistinguishable clinical signs from those of foot-and-mouth disease, which prevents international trade of swine and related products. SVD-specific antibody detection via an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the most versatile and commonly used method for SVD surveillance and export certification. Inactivated SVD virus is the commonly used antigen in SVD-related ELISA. A recombinant SVD virus-like particle (VLP) was generated by using a Bac-to-Bac baculovirus expression system. Results of SVD-VLP analyses from electron microscopy, western blotting, immunofluorescent assay, and mass spectrometry showed that the recombinant SVD-VLP morphologically resemble authentic SVD viruses. The SVD-VLP was evaluated as a replacement for inactivated whole SVD virus in competitive and isotype-specific ELISAs for the detection of antibodies against SVD virus. The recombinant SVD-VLP assay produced results similar to those from inactivated whole virus antigen ELISA. The VLP-based ELISA results were comparable to those from the virus neutralization test for antibody detection in pigs experimentally inoculated with SVD virus. Use of the recombinant SVD-VLP is a safe and valuable alternative to using SVD virus antigen in diagnostic assays.

BREAKS IN THIN AND THICK DISKS OF EDGE-ON GALAXIES IMAGED IN THE<i>SPITZER</i>SURVEY OF STELLAR STRUCTURE IN GALAXIES (S4G)

        Comeró,n, Sé,bastien,Elmegreen, Bruce G.,Salo, Heikki,Laurikainen, Eija,Athanassoula, E.,Bosma, Albert,Knapen, Johan H.,Gadotti, Dimitri A.,Sheth, Kartik,Hinz, Joannah L.,Regan, Michael W. IOP Publishing 2012 The Astrophysical journal Vol.759 No.2

<P>Breaks in the radial luminosity profiles of galaxies have until now been mostly studied averaged over disks. Here, we study separately breaks in thin and thick disks in 70 edge-on galaxies using imaging from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies. We built luminosity profiles of the thin and thick disks parallel to midplanes and we found that thin disks often truncate (77%). Thick disks truncate less often (31%), but when they do, their break radius is comparable with that in the thin disk. This suggests either two different truncation mechanisms-one of dynamical origin affecting both disks simultaneously and another one only affecting the thin disk-or a single mechanism that creates a truncation in one disk or in both depending on some galaxy property. Thin disks apparently antitruncate in around 40% of galaxies. However, in many cases, these antitruncations are an artifact caused by the superposition of a thin disk and a thick disk, with the latter having a longer scale length. We estimate the real thin disk antitruncation fraction to be less than 15%. We found that the ratio of the thick and thin stellar disk mass is roughly constant (0.2 < M-T/M-t < 0.7) for circular velocities v(c) > 120 km s(-1), but becomes much larger at smaller velocities. We hypothesize that this is due to a combination of a high efficiency of supernova feedback and a slower dynamical evolution in lower-mass galaxies causing stellar thin disks to be younger and less massive than in higher-mass galaxies.</P>
