<P><B>Introduction</B></P><P>The receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of arthritis. We conducted this study to determine the effect of interleukin (IL)-17 on the expression and production of RAGE in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The role of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activator 1 (Act1) in IL-17-induced RAGE expression in RA-FLS was also evaluated.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>RAGE expression in synovial tissues was assessed by immunohistochemical staining. RAGE mRNA production was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Act-1 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) was produced and treated to evaluate the role of Act-1 on RAGE production.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>RAGE, IL-17, and Act-1 expression increased in RA synovium compared to osteoarthritis synovium. RAGE expression and production increased by IL-17 and IL-1β (*<I>P <</I>0.05 vs. untreated cells) treatment but not by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in RA-FLS. The combined stimuli of both IL-17 and IL-1β significantly increased RAGE production compared to a single stimulus with IL-17 or IL-1β alone (<I>P <</I>0.05 vs. 10 ng/ml IL-17). Act-1 shRNA added to the RA-FLS culture supernatant completely suppressed the enhanced production of RAGE induced by IL-17.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>RAGE was overexpressed in RA synovial tissues, and RAGE production was stimulated by IL-17 and IL-1β. Act-1 contributed to the stimulatory effect of IL-17 on RAGE production, suggesting a possible inhibitory target for RA treatment.</P>

Acquired resistance to inhibitors of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) is a major clinical challenge for ALK fusion-positive non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In the absence of secondary ALK mutations, epigenetic reprogramming is one of the main mechanisms of drug resistance, as it leads to phenotype switching that occurs during the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Although drug-induced epigenetic reprogramming is believed to alter the sensitivity of cancer cells to anticancer treatments, there is still much to learn about overcoming drug resistance. In this study, we used an in vitro model of ceritinib-resistant NSCLC and employed genome-wide DNA methylation analysis in combination with single-cell (sc) RNA-seq to identify cytidine deaminase (CDA), a pyrimidine salvage pathway enzyme, as a candidate drug target. CDA was hypomethylated and upregulated in ceritinib-resistant cells. CDA-overexpressing cells were rarely but definitively detected in the naïve cell population by scRNA-seq, and their abundance was increased in the acquired-resistance population. Knockdown of CDA had antiproliferative effects on resistant cells and reversed the EMT phenotype. Treatment with epigenome-related nucleosides such as 5-formyl-2′-deoxycytidine selectively ablated CDA-overexpressing resistant cells via accumulation of DNA damage. Collectively, our data suggest that targeting CDA metabolism using epigenome-related nucleosides represents a potential new therapeutic strategy for overcoming ALK inhibitor resistance in NSCLC.
Response of Dianthus japonicus Thunb. to NaCl Stress Imposed at Different Growth Stages

Dianthus japonicus Thunb. was exposed to NaCl stress to investigate its growth response and uppermost limit of salt tolerance at different growth stages for its use on saline area. NaCl stress was imposed at germination, seedling (41 days after seeding), and mature plant stages (162 days after seeding). The plants were subirrigated everyday with NaCl solutions (0, 50, 100, 200, and 300 mM) at seedling stage and 400 mM NaCl was added for the experiment of seed germination and mature plants. Almost all seeds germinated with 100 mM NaCl treatment, but seed germination was suppressed with over 200 mM NaCl treatment. At seedling stage, growth was inhibited even with 50 mM NaCl treatment. At mature stage, however, plant growth was not seriously affected by 100 mM NaCl treatment. Proline content was increased in adversely affected plants by salt stress. Na? and Cl? were accumulated more in the shoot than in the root as NaCl concentration increased while K?, Ca²?, and Mg²? contents were not adversely affected by NaCl treatment. These results indicate that seed germination and mature plants growth were more tolerant than seedling growth under NaCl stress condition in D. japonicus and it has a potential to grow in saline area.

최근 무선인터넷을 이용할 수 있는 환경이 많이 만들어지면서 PDA를 이용한 무선인터넷의 활용도가 점점 더 많아지고 있다. PDA를 이용한 무선인터넷의 인프라가 많이 구축되면서 사용자들은 점점 더 많은 서비스와 다양한 콘텐츠를 요구하게 되었고, 실제로 다양한 서비스가 PDA에서 이용되고 있다. 이러한 사회적 여건 변화에 따라 본 논문에서는 휴대가 간편하고 손쉽게 정보를 얻을 수 있는 무선 인터넷 기반의 PDA를 이용하여 작명서비스를 받을 수 있도록 작명에 필요한 법칙을 알고리즘화하고 서비스를 설계하고 구현한다. Recently, with the rise of wireless Internet, it is becoming popular to use PDA. Also, the more wireless Internet Infra increases, the more services and a variety of contents are needed. Actually, a number of services is being used for PDA. Accordingly, this paper designs and implements naming service based on wireless Internet which is portable and easy for information. We develope the algorithm, design and implement the service for naming service.

In this study, catalytic decomposition of chlorobenzene, a model compound of dioxin, was investigated. Catalysts made of a mesoporous material SBA-15 were used. The effect of Pt impregnation on the catalytic activity was evaluated. The catalysts were characterized using BET and NH3-TPD. The catalytic activity for chlorobenzene removal reaction was shown to increase with the acid amount of catalysts. Addition of Pt to Al-SBA-15 was also shown to enhance the catalytic activity.

<P> Coastline recession is one of the best indicators of coastal erosion. Three methods for computing coastline recession - the baseline approach, the dynamic segmentation approach and the area-based approach - have been used, each of which has one or more drawbacks. To overcome these problems, a new methodology for measuring coastline recession is proposed, using buffering and non-linear least squares estimation. The proposed method was compared with the three existing methods with respect to two simulated cases and two real coastlines. Test results confirmed that the new method is more reliable than the three other methods, all of which are susceptible to variability of recession, scale, number of line segments, length of coastlines and direction of the baseline. The proposed method, incorporating two physically meaningful values - magnitude and variability of coastline recession according to the mean and standard deviation of coastline offsets, respectively - presents itself as an effective alternative method of assessing coastline recession.</P>
