Spatholobus suberectus belonging to the family Leguminosae has been used in Oriental medicine for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, tonifying the blood, relaxing tendons, stopping internal bleeding and eliminating dampness. This study investigates whether the water extracts of S. suberectus induce apoptotic cell death in Jurkat T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells. Cell viability of Jurkat cells was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by S. suberectus, as measured by cell morphology. The capability of S. suberectus to induce apoptosis was associated with proteolytic cleavage of specific target protein such as poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase protein suggesting the possible involvement of caspases. The purpose of this study is also to investigate the effect of S. suberectus on cell cycle progression. G1 checkpoint related gene products (cyclin D1, cyclin dependent kinase 4. retinoblastoma, E2F1) were decreased in their protein levels in a dose-dependent manners after treatment of the extract. These results indicate that the increase of apoptotic cell death by S. suberectus may be due to the inhibition of cell cycle progression in wild type p53-lacking Jurkat cells.

Multimedia representation delay, and degradation of QoS(quality of services) are problems of multimedia service system over low-bit-rate network such as internet because it cannot transmit multimedia data within restricted time. Data compression technique has been researched for solving this problem. In this paper, we implement a multimedia on demand service system using ITU-T H.263 video codec which has high compression ratio and good quality of multimedia data. The system is consists of UI(User Interface) using WWW, request handling using CGI, data transmission program, and multimedia player program. The developed system can serve up to 10 fps with 10 - 50 kbps data for video and 8.5kbps data for audio. Application of our system includes shopping information, multimedia news, traveling information and so on. 인터넷과 같은 협대역 통신망에서는 멀티미디어 데이타 서비스시 제한된 시간내에 필요한 정보를 보낼 수 없기 때문에 재생 지연, 서비스 품질 저하등의 많은 문제점이 발생된다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 데이타 압축기술에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 현재까지 연구된 협대역 통신망에 적합한 고압축 코덱인 ITU-T H.263 비디오 코덱을 이용하여 인터넷에서 서비스가 가능한 멀티미디어 서비스 시스템을 개발하였다. 개발된 서비스 시스템은 WWW를 이용한 사용자 인터페이스, CGI를 통한 사용자 요구처리, 데이타 전송 프로그램, 미디어 프레이어로 구성되어 있다. 10-50 kbps의 비디오 데이타와 8.5kbps의 오디오 데이타를 사용하여 초당 10프레임의 서비스를 제공할 수 있으며, 멀티미디어 여행 정보, 상품정보, 뉴스등의 응용 서비스 시스템에 사용할 수 있다.

The centipede Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans has been a medically important arthropod species by using it as a traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. In this study, we derived a novel lactoferricin B like peptide (LBLP) from the whole bodies of adult centipedes, S. s. mutilans, and investigated the antifungal effect of LBLP. LBLP exerted an antifungal and fungicidal activity without hemolysis. To investigate the antifungal mechanism of LBLP, a membrane study with propidium iodide was first conducted against Candida albicans. The result showed that LBLP caused fungal membrane permeabilization. The assays of the three dimensional flow cytometric contour plot and membrane potential further showed cell shrinkage and membrane depolarization by the membrane damage. Finally, we confirmed the membrane-active mechanism of LBLP by synthesizing model membranes, calcein and FITC-dextran loaded large unilamellar vesicles. These results showed that the antifungal effect of LBLP on membrane was due to the formation of pores with radii between 0.74 nm and 1.4 nm. In conclusion, this study suggests that LBLP exerts a potent antifungal activity by pore formation in the membrane, eventually leading to fungal cell death.

The effects of temperatures on pearl oyster, Pincdata fucata were studied by evaluating some functional immune responses of the haemocytes. Water temperature is one of the most important factors in bivalve immune defense. Haemocytes comprise a primary line by inflammation, encapsulation and phagocytosis. These phagocytic abilities of haemocytes were observed in different temperatures. The number of the circulating haemocytes by migratory assay, phagocytic activities by MTT assay and reactive oxygen species production of haemocytes by CL assay were measured at different temperatures. Results showed that pearl oyster maintained at 20℃ and 25℃ displayed significantly higher values for all the measured immune parameters in comparison to maintained at 10, 15, and 30℃.

Small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be treated by surgery, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) and percutaneous microwave coagulation therapy (PMCT). However, surgical resection is not a viable option for all patients due to poor liver function. Furthermore, TACE is sometimes ineffective because of inadequate angiogenesis in small HCC. PEI does not always bring complete necrosis of the tumor because of inhomogeneous distribution within the tumor. PMCT heats tissue by molecular vibration of water in tissue, and induces thermal coagulation. Regardless of the presence of a capsule, PMCT is the most reliable method in inducing tissue coagulation. Slight pain, mild fever, transient elevation of liver enzyme, subcutaneous hematoma, ascites, pleural effusion and tumor seeding can be developed after PMCT. We report a case of cutaneobiliary fistula complicated after PMCT with a review of literatures.
