        Plasma polymerized bio-interface directs fibronectin adsorption and functionalization to enhance “epithelial barrier structure” formation via FN-ITG β1-FAK-mTOR signaling cascade

        Background: Transepithelial medical devices are increasing utilized in clinical practices. However, the damage of continuous natural epithelial barrier has become a major risk factor for the failure of epithelium-penetrating implants. How to increase the “epithelial barrier structures” (focal adhesions, hemidesmosomes, etc.) becomes one key research aim in overcoming this difficulty. Directly targeting the in situ “epithelial barrier structures” related proteins (such as fibronectin) absorption and functionalization can be a promising way to enhance interface-epithelial integration. Methods: Herein, we fabricated three plasma polymerized bio-interfaces possessing controllable surface chemistry. Their capacity to adsorb and functionalize fibronectin (FN) from serum protein was compared by Liquid Chromatography- Tandem Mass Spectrometry. The underlying mechanisms were revealed by molecular dynamics simulation. The response of gingival epithelial cells regarding the formation of epithelial barrier structures was tested. Results: Plasma polymerized surfaces successfully directed distinguished protein adsorption profiles from serum protein pool, in which plasma polymerized allylamine (ppAA) surface favored adsorbing adhesion related proteins and could promote FN absorption and functionalization via electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds, thus subsequently activating the ITG β1-FAK-mTOR signaling and promoting gingival epithelial cells adhesion. Conclusion: This study offers an effective perspective to overcome the current dilemma of the inferior interfaceepithelial integration by in situ protein absorption and functionalization, which may advance the development of functional transepithelial biointerfaces. Graphical Abstract: Tuning the surface chemistry by plasma polymerization can control the adsorption of fibronectin and functionalize it by exposing functional protein domains. The functionalized fibronectin can bind to human gingival epithelial cell membrane integrins to activate epithelial barrier structure related signaling pathway, which eventually enhances the formation of epithelial barrier structure.

        Drainage procedure for pancreatolithiasis: re-examination of the pancreatic duct diameter standard

        Purpose: Pancreatic duct decompression relieves pancreatic duct stone (PDS)-associated abdominal pain, though a consensus indication for the drainage procedure of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) is lacking. Moreover, major prognostic factors for postsurgical long-term pain relief and recurrence are largely unknown. Methods: The clinical outcomes of 65 consecutive PDS patients undergoing surgery from 2008–2012 with 3+ years of follow-up were assessed. Results: At postsurgical follow-up (median, 4.5 years; range, 3–7 years; procedure: Partington, n = 32; Frey, n = 27; pancreatoduodenectomy, n = 3; distal pancreatectomy, n = 3), the early complication and complete stone clearance rates were 29.2% and 97%, respectively. Long-term, complete and partial pain relief were 93.9%, 83.1%, and 10.8%, respectively. The risk of pancreatic fistula was higher in the <8 mm group than in the >8 mm group (P < 0.05), and 80% of the pancreatic fistula cases occurred in the <8 mm group. A shorter pain duration (P = 0.007), smaller MPD diameter (P = 0.04), and lower Izbicki pain score (P < 0.001) predicted long-term pain relief. Pain recurrence after initial remission occurred in 5 patients and was only related to pain duration (P = 0.02). Stone recurrence and pancreatic exocrine functional and endocrine functional deterioration occurred in 2, 5, and 11 patients, respectively. Conclusion: Surgery provides excellent stone clearance, long-term pain relief, and acceptable postoperative morbidity. Using 8 mm as the criterion for drainage surgery can minimize the postoperative pancreatic fistula risk. Individualized and timely surgical treatment may improve the effect of surgery.

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A novel tetraphenylethene-based probe bearing bis-imidazolium anion donors is herein reported for pyrophosphate anion recognition.       • Timing-reliable Design of High-speed TigerSHARC 201 Link Transceiver

        TigerSHARC 201 link interface is a very efficient double data rate protocol. However, its inconsecutive characteristic of clock adds great difficulty for FPGA implementation when transmission rate is too high. In this paper, with specially-designed clock tree, ingenious rate decreasing strategy, plus proper control on FPGA place & routing processing, 8 group link transceivers with data rate over 500MB/s per lane were designed successfully on Xilinx Virtex6 XC6VLX130. Besides, no sophistic IOSERDES component was utilized. Whole design was completed via Verilog RTL code and Xilinx user constrained file. Presented design also has experienced harsh environment test, proved its efficiency and reliability.

        Optimal Tracking Control for Discrete-time Systems with Multiple Input Delays under Sinusoidal Disturbances

        This study researches the tracking control problem for discrete-time systems with multiple input delays affected by sinusoidal disturbances. This study is organized around the expression of sinusoidal and disturbances and the delay-free transformation. First, based on the periodic characteristic of the sinusoidal disturbance, the sinusoidal disturbances are considered as the output of an exosystem. By proposing a discrete variable transformation, the discrete-time system with multiple input delays and the quadratic performance index are transformed into equivalent delay-free ones. Then, by constructing an augmented system that comprises the states of the exosystems of sinusoidal disturbances, the reference input, and the delay-free transformation systems, the original tracking problem is transformed into the optimal tracking problem for a delay-free system with respect to the simplified performance index. The optimal tracking control (OTC) law is obtained from Riccati and Stein equations. The existent and uniqueness of the optimal control law is proved. A reduced-order observer is constructed to solve the problem of physically realizable for the items of the reference input and sinusoidal disturbances. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approaches are validated by numerical examples.

        Seroprevalence of Dirofilaria immitis in Cats from Liaoning Province, Northeastern China

        The present study was performed to investigate the seroprevalence and risk factors for Dirofilaria immitis infection in cats from Liaoning province, northeastern China. From October 2014 to September 2016, sera of 651 cats, including 364 domestic cats and 287 feral cats (332 females and 319 males) were assessed. They were tested for the presence of D. immitis antigen using SNAP Heartworm RT test kit. In this population, the average prevalence was 4.5%. Age and rearing conditions (feral or domestic) were found to be associated with the prevalence of D. immitis. The prevalence was significantly higher in feral cats compared with domestic cats (8.4% vs 1.4%, P<0.01). There was no significant difference between males and females (4.7% vs 4.2%, P>0.05), but older cats (≥3 years old) showed a statistically higher prevalence compared with younger cats (<3 years old) in feral populations (16.8 vs 2.4%, P<0.01), while the difference between the age groups was not statistically significant in domestic cats (2.4% vs 0.51%, P>0.05), all these results suggest that outdoor exposure time may be one of the most important factors for D. immitis prevalence in cats. Results reveal that D. immitis are prevalence in domestic and feral cats in northeastern China, which indicates that appropriate preventive measures should be taken to decrease the incidence of feline heartworm disease in Liaoning province, northeastern China.

        Identification of seven novel virulence genes from Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri by Tn5-based random mutagenesis

        To identify novel virulence genes, a mutant library of Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri 29-1 was produced using EZ-Tn5 transposon and the mutants were inoculated into susceptible grapefruit. Forty mutants with altered virulence phenotypes were identified. Nine of the mutants showed a complete loss of citrus canker induction, and the other 31 mutants resulted in attenuated canker symptoms. Southern blot analysis revealed that each of the mutants carried a single copy of Tn5. The flanking sequence was identified by plasmid rescue and 18 different ORFs were identified in the genome sequence. Of these 18 ORFs, seven had not been previously associated with the virulence of X. citri subsp. citri and were therefore confirmed by complementation analysis. Real-time PCR analysis showed that the seven genes were upregulated when the bacteria were grown in citrus plants, suggesting that the expression of these genes was essential for canker development.
