Study of the most frequent natural tooth colors in the Spanish population using spectrophotometry

Gomez-Polo, Cristina,Gomez-Polo, Miguel,Martinez Vazquez de Parga, Juan Antonio,Celemin Vinuela, Alicia The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2015 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.7 No.6

PURPOSE. To identify the most frequent natural tooth colors using the Easyshade Compact (Vita -Zahnfabrik) spectrophotometer on a sample of the Spanish population according to the 3D Master System. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The middle third of the facial surface of natural maxillary central incisors was measured with an Easyshade Compact spectrophotometer (Vita Zahnfabrik) in 1361 Caucasian Spanish participants aged between 16 and 89 years. Natural tooth color was recorded using the 3D Master System nomenclature. The program used for the present descriptive statistical analysis of the results was SAS 9.1.3. RESULTS. The results show that the most frequent dental color in the total sample studied is 3M1 (7.05%), followed by the intermediate shade 1M1.5 (6.91%) and 2L1.5 (6.02%). CONCLUSION. According to the research methodology used, and taking into account the limitations of this study, it can be proposed that the most frequent color among the Spanish population is 3M1; the most common lightness group is 2; the most frequent hue group according to the 3D Master System is M and the most frequent chroma group is 1.5.

Myeloperoxidase Is Associated with Insulin Resistance and Inflammation in Overweight Subjects with First-Degree Relatives with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Anel Gómez García,Mireya Rivera Rodríguez,Carlos Gómez Alonso,Daysi Yazmin Rodríguez Ochoa,Cleto Alvarez Aguilar 대한당뇨병학회 2015 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.39 No.1

Background: Family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of risk factors for that in future a subject can develop diabetes. Insulin resistance (IR) is important in the pathogenesis of T2DM. There is evidence that oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology and/or progression of diabetes. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) participates in developing of inflammation. The objective was to investigate if MPO is associated with IR and inflammation in individuals with first-degree relatives of T2DM. Methods: Cross-sectional study in 84 overweight individuals with family history of T2DM divided in two groups according to IR, group with IR (homeostasis model assessment [HOMA] ≥2.5; n=43) and control group (CG; HOMA <2.5; n=41). Complete clinical history and a venous blood sample were collected for measuring glucose and lipids profile, insulin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), MPO, glutathione reductase (GRd), glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase. Results: MPO, TNF-α, and IL-6 were higher in patients with IR than in CG (MPO: 308.35 [190.85 to 445.42] vs. 177.35 [104.50 to 279.85], P=0.0001; TNF-α: 13.46 [10.58 to 18.88] vs. 9.39 [7.53 to 11.25], P=0.0001; IL-6: 32.93 [24.93 to 38.27] vs. 15.60 [12.93 to 26.27]; P=0.0001, respectively). MPO was associated with IR (rho de Spearman=0.362, P=0.001). In the analysis of lineal regression, MPO predicts IR (β, 0.263; t, 2.520; P=0.014). In the univariate analysis, MPO had an odds ratio of 9.880 for risk of IR (95% confidence interval, 2.647 to 36.879). Conclusion: MPO had relation with IR and inflammation parameters in overweight subjects with first-degree relatives of T2DM. We need studies on a casual relationship and molecular mechanisms among the increased serum MPO levels, inflammation markers, and IR.

      • Wild mushroom consumption in the P’urhépecha Plateau at Michoacán, México: social, ethnomycological and nutritional issues

        Torres-Gómez Mariano,Gómez-Peralta Marlene,Vázquez-Marrufo Gerardo 한국식품연구원 2023 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.10 No.4

Among Mesoamerican cultures, P’urhépecha settlers inhabiting Michoacán State in Central Mexico preserve ancestral tradition on mushrooms eating. Most mycological knowledge available for this ethnical group has been addressed in the Pátzcuaro’s Lake zone, whereas P’urhépecha communities in other cultural and ecological relevant geographic areas remain unstudied. Thus, this work describes the ethnomycological knowledge of a scarcely analyzed Arantepacua P’urhépecha community at Michoacán Plateau region. Through structured interviews and field collections, data on the use, knowledge, biomass extraction and nomenclature of wild mushrooms were obtained. A list of P’urhépecha names to design 16 wild mushrooms species and 11 fruitbody components is documented and studied community used Spanish popular names to describe 21 wild mushrooms species and 11 fruitbody structures. Most valuable consumed mushroom species for Arantepacua settlers belong to the Amanita, Boletus, Hypomyces and Ramaria genera. Gender roles on mushrooms collect and cooking, new terms in P’urhépecha dialect to refer the parts of a fruitbody and vegetative mycelium, as well as local recipes and nutritional relevance of the mushroom species consumed by studied community are addressed and discussed. The ethnomycological knowledge documented contributes new terms in P’urhépecha to name the parts of an agarical fruitbody, the mycelium and empirical knowledge about mycorrhizal associations. This was the first P’urhépecha ethnomycological study made outside the Lake Pátzcuaro basin.

        ( Ruben Gomez ),( Ericka Carrillo ),( Filiberto Gomez ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Elderly onset SLE contributes to 10% of all SLE and is considered a rare disease, the signs and symptoms are common to other more frequent diseases in this age so the differential diagnosis is wide and could represent a great clinical challenge. We report two cases, one patient presented with data of serositis, acute renal failure and glomerulonephritis; while the other had evidence of cerebral vasculitis. Case 1: 60 year old male with 6 months of asthenia, malaise and early-morning bilateral limb edema, received treatment with diuretics without improvement, presenting arterial hypertension. He was admitted with IV NYHA class Congestive HF and left pleural effusion. Laboratory reported Hb 14. 3 g/dl, leucocytes 5750 (normal differential count), ESR of 50 mm/h, creatinine 2. 1 mg/dl, urea 60 mg/dl, urinalysis was positive for albumin, hemoglobin and granular casts; GFR 35 ml/min, and 24-hour albuminuria 3. 8 g. ECHO showed a 68% LVEF and 150 ml pericardial effusion. Immunologic profi le showed positive ANA (1:140), positive anti-dsDNA (1:60), and positive anti-SM (1:65). Kidney biopsy showed focal-segmental glomerulonephritis. Case 2: 68 year-old female positive for Diabetes Mellitus and Arterial Hypertension treated with glibenclamide and captopril. She presented at ER with diplopia, bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia and bilateral limb paraparesis, initial head CT-scan was normal, so she was admitted to the hospital. A second simple and contrasted head CT-scan was also normal, then the head MRI showed vasculitis and the brain SPECT revealed hypocaptating areas in midbrain, frontal and parietal cortex. Laboratory reported Hb 13. 3 g/dl, leucocytes 2578, glycose 145 mg/dl, normal creatinine, hepatic profi le and urinalysis. Immunologic profi le reported negative ANA, positive anti-dsDNA (1:95) and positive anti-SM (1:120). Both patients received treatment with Cyclophosphamide and Methylprednisolone with great response.

Addition of a Worm Leachate as Source of Humic Substances in the Drinking Water of Broiler Chickens

        Gomez-Rosales, S.,Angeles, M. De L. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.2

The objective of this research was to evaluate the growth performance, the apparent ileal digestibility of nitrogen and energy, the retention of nutrients and the apparent metabolizable energy corrected to zero nitrogen retention (AMEn) in broiler chickens supplemented with increasing doses of a worm leachate (WL) as a source of humic substances (HS) in the drinking water. In Exp. 1, 140 male broilers were penned individually and assigned to four WL levels (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) mixed in the drinking water from 21 to 49 days of age. Water was offered in plastic bottles tied to the cage. In Exp. 2, 600 male broilers from 21 to 49 days of age housed in floor pens were assigned to three levels of WL (0%, 10%, and 20%) mixed in the drinking water. The WL was mixed with tap water in plastic containers connected by plastic tubing to bell drinkers. The results of both experiments were subjected to analysis of variance and polynomial contrasts. In Exp. 1, the daily water consumption was similar among treatments but the consumption of humic, fulvic, and total humic acids increased linearly (p<0.01) as the WL increased in the drinking water. The feed conversion (p<0.01) and the ileal digestibility of energy, the excretion of dry matter and energy, the retention of dry matter, ash and nitrogen and the AMEn showed quadratic responses (p<0.05) relative to the WL levels in drinking water. In Exp. 2, the increasing level of WL in the drinking water had quadratic effects on the final body weight, daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio (p<0.05). The addition of WL as a source of HS in the drinking water had beneficial effects on the growth performance, ileal digestibility of energy, the retention of nutrients as well on the AMEn in broiler chickens; the best results were observed when the WL was mixed at levels of 20% to 30% in the drinking water.

Development of microporous-activated carbons derived from two renewable precursors for CO2 capture

        Gomez-Delgado E.,Nunell G. V.,Cukierman A. L.,Bonelli P. R. 한국탄소학회 2020 Carbon Letters Vol.30 No.2

Wood sawdust from an invasive arboreal species, Parkinsonia aculeata, and seeds from a tropical fruit of massive consumption, Pouteria sapota, were used as precursors for the development of activated carbons (ACs) directed to CO2 adsorption. Chemical activation employing KOH as activating agent and pre-established experimental conditions was applied. Main physicochemical properties of the ACs in relation to their CO2 adsorption performance were examined. The ACs developed from the wood sawdust and the seeds presented specifc surfaces areas of 770 and 1000 m2 g−1, respectively, with their porosity development resulting essentially microporous (< 2 nm). They also showed a similar content of acidic surface groups, but basic functionalities of the former duplicated those of the latter. Maximum CO2 adsorbed at equilibrium (273 K and 100 kPa) was 5.0 mmol g−1 and 4.4 mmol g−1 for the samples derived from the sawdust and the seeds, respectively. On the other hand, CO2 adsorption capacities mimicking post-combustion conditions, as evaluated from thermogravimetric assays and breakthrough curves obtained in a packed-bed column, were approximately 1 mmol g−1, indicating a good CO2 adsorption performance for both ACs. Nevertheless, those derived from the wood sawdust with a notorious preeminence of micropores (~ 93%), narrower pore size distribution centered around 1 nm, and a higher content of basic functionalities than the ACs obtained from the seeds showed a relatively better performance. The CO2 removal capacity of the activated carbons was not noticeably afecte
