Mitigating Design Fixation: A Visualization Tool for Enhancing Situation Awareness
Dongwook Hwang(황동욱) 대한인간공학회 2021 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.11
Objective: The aim of this study is to develop an information acquisition and display system called the Situation Awareness Support System (SASS) to stimulate a designer’s creativity. Background: External stimuli can stimulate a designer’s creativity and improve the outcome of design ideation for product/service concept generation. A psychological phenomenon that may occur during such utilization of external stimuli is design fixation, which is widely believed to adversely affect the ideation outcome. One of the difficulties in preventing or alleviating design fixation is that the designer may not easily detect or predict its occurrence during the mentally demanding task of ideation. Method: The current study develops a situation awareness support system, which helps the novice designer perceive and predict the occurrences of design fixation. The situation awareness support system is empirically evaluated in its utility in mitigating design fixation. Results: The study result shows that the situation awareness support system can help the novice designer to mitigate design fixation while not influencing significant impact on the ideation performance. Conclusion: This is the first research study that attempts to use the concept of situation awareness in order to mitigate design fixation problems.

The design of assistive devices is subject to multiple challenges: the design problems are mostly case-specific and require customized design solutions. Many design problems are highly constrained, and thus, straightforward solutions are difficult to identify. Yet, rapid generation of viable solutions is important for the quality of life of the affected disabled persons. Therefore, developing effective and efficient design methods that boost designers’creativity and problem solving capabilities, and henceforth, support rapid generation of high quality design alternatives is needed. The current study proposes a new design method termed Data-based Assistive Device Design (DADD). DADD requires a large design reference database (DRDB) that stores descriptions of existing assistive devices. For a given design problem, the DRDB is searched to find examples of existing assistive devices that may relate to the given problem. The designer analyzes the retrieved design references to understand the underlying design principles and relates them to the given problem in order to conceive design concepts.
Pickup Coil Counter for Detecting the Presence of Trains Operated by Wireless Power Transfer
Hwang, Karam,Kim, Dongwook,Har, Dongsoo,Ahn, Seungyoung IEEE 2017 IEEE SENSORS JOURNAL Vol.17 No.22
<P>An axle counter is a popularly used device for detecting passing trains. They detect train wheels by the change of the magnetic field, made by the train wheels, in a receiving coil. Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems are used to deliver tractive power to electric trains by magnetic resonance. They consist of a pickup coil onboard the train, a supply coil on the track, and related trackside electronic circuits. When a WPT system is proximate to an axle counter, the magnetic field of the WPT can produce significant electromagnetic interference, significantly affecting the performance of the axle counter. Since the WPT system is an emerging power supply system for future railways, an alternative device for detecting trains is considered necessary. A novel device called the pickup coil counter (PCC) is proposed for this purpose. Unlike the axle counter, which detects the train's wheels, the PCC detects the WPT pickup coil onboard the train using a sensor coil wound around the WPT supply coil on the track and a detection circuit in trackside equipment. The operating concept of the PCC is explained. Its detection performance was evaluated by 3-D FEM simulation and experiment, and the results are presented.</P>

Java Card System first backups the previous data about Java objects into the transactionbuffer, then writes new data into EEPROM, during the downloading and execution of Java Card's application called an applet. Java Card technology supports both persistent object stored in EEPROM and transient objects stored in RAM because of the high limitation of its memory resources. In this paper, we made a suggestion on how to improve the speed of the execution by using the improved data store mechanism and memory structure. We moved Java Objects stored heap area in EEPROM into RAM. It makes Java Card much faster and is similar with the execution of application and the memory management in Java System of PC environment.

The aim of this study was to analyze the learning curve of a low-volume veterinary surgeon for laparoscopic salpingectomy of Asiatic black bear. A total of 66 Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) were presented for sterilization using laparoscopic salpingectomy. These 66 bears were divided into three groups of 22 bears according to the order of surgery (A, B, and C groups, 22 bears per group). One veterinarian performed laparoscopic salpingectomy. There was no significant difference in age, body weight, or crown-rump length between groups. The hazard of completion for salpingectomy by 5 minutes was higher (p < 0.0001) in B and C groups than A group, whereas the hazard was not significant different between B and C groups. The factor that affected the hazard of completing salpingectomy by 5 minutes was heart rate, not age or weight. Operation time was 12.61 ± 8.04 minutes for group A, 5.35 ± 4.38 minutes for group B, and 2.80 ± 1.16 minutes for group C. The operation time for salpingectomy shortened over time. However, significant difference in operation time was present only between groups A and C (p = 0.001). The operation time for laparoscopic salpingectomy decreased rapidly for the first 7 bears (p < 0.05). It then decreased gradually until the 66th case. Operation time of laparoscopic salpingectomy was significantly decreased and stabilized after 33 cases (p < 0.05). As a result, the number of bears required for a low-volume veterinary surgeon to be proficient in laparoscopic salpingectomy is 33 or more.

<P>Oxygen evolution reaction for alkaline water electrolysis was studied using various mixed metal oxide catalysts. Mixed metal oxide electrodes consisting of RuO2, IrO2, and Ta2O5 with various ratios on a titanium substrate were prepared by spray thermal decomposition. The crystallinity of the synthesized catalyst was investigated via X-ray diffraction, and the oxidation state of each component was determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, and the roughness factor was determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1 M H2SO4. Electo-catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction was measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1 M KOH at room temperature, and it was found to be strongly dependent on composition of catalyst. Among all electrodes tested, catalyst with a composition of Ru:Ir:Ta= 1:2:2.5 exhibited the highest current density of 100 mA cm(-2) at 1.67 V, corresponding to an overpotential of 0.44 V.</P>
