        Four Butenolides are Novel Cytotoxic Compounds Isolated from the Marine-Derived Bacterium, Streptoverticillium luteoverticillatum 11014

        Four known butenolides were isolated from the ethyl acetate extracts of the culture broth of the marine-derived bacterium, Streptoverticillium luteoverticillatum, by bioassay-guided fractionation. The structures were identified on the basis of spectral data. The absolute configuration of compound (1) was determined by CD spectrum for the first time. Compounds 1-4 showed in vitro cytotoxicity against the murine lymphoma P388 and human leukemia K562 cell lines. This is the first report on the isolation of butenolides from the marine bacterium, Streptoverticillium luteoverticillatum, and their cytotoxic activities.

      • KAI1/CD82 and MRP1/CD9 Serve as Markers of Infiltration, Metastasis, and Prognosis in Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinomas

        Objective: The current study explored the expression of KAI1/CD82 and MRP1/CD9 and its significance in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Methods: The expression levels of KAI1/CD82 and MRP1/CD9 in 100 LSCC tissue specimens, as well as in 30 para-LSCC non-carcinomatous tissue specimens randomly taken from the patients, were assessed using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) and immunohistochemistry and correlations with pathological parameters of LSCC and their influence on survival function were analyzed. Results: KAI1/CD82 and MRP1/CD9 showed basically consistent changes in both mRNA and protein expression. Their expression in the 30 LSCC specimens was significantly lower compared with that in the corresponding non-carcinous tissues (P < 0.01 or 0.05), notably correlating with TNM stage, differentiation degree, clinical stage, and lymphatic metastasis (P < 0.01 or 0.05), but not gender, age, and LSCC growth sites (P > 0.05). The median survival of patients with positive KAI1/CD82 and MRP1/CD9 protein expression was longer than that of patients with negative protein expression (P < 0.01 or 0.05). KAI1/CD82 protein expression negatively correlated with MRP1/CD9 protein expression in LSCC (${\chi}^2$= 31.25, P < 0.01). Conclusion: KAI1/CD82 and MRP1/CD9 may jointly participate in the development of LSCC. They may serve as the markers for judging the infiltration, metastasis, and prognosis of LSCC.

        The effect of chitosan (CS) coagulation bath on structure and performance of polylactic acid (PLA) microfiltration membrane

        Membrane hydrophilicity is a crucial factor in evaluating ultrafiltration processes. In this paper, chitosan(CS) was selected for the hydrophilic modification of the polylactic acid (PLA) membrane, and PLACS membranes wereprepared for the densification of the yeast solution. By non-solvent phase inversion method (NIPS), the PLACS microfiltrationmembranes were prepared by using chitosan (CS) acetic acid solution as the coagulation bath and glutaraldehydeas the crosslinking agent. PLACS membranes were characterized by water contact angle, porosity, pore sizedistribution, mechanical properties, ATR-FTIR, SEM, TGA and the ultrafiltration experiment. The viscosity of coagulationbath solution can severely influence the exchange rate of the solvent and the non-solvent as well during phaseinversion; therefore, it can regulate the precipitation kinetics and membrane morphology. The results showed that chitosan(CS) was presented as granular on the pore surfaces of the PLACS membranes. When chitosan (CS) contentincreased, gel rate became smaller and membrane forming process was prolonged; the porosity and pore size of thePLACS were increased compared to the polylactic acid (PLA) membrane, pure water flux increased from 90.31 L·m2·h1to 120.14 L·m2·h1, and yeast rejection rate increased from 75% to more than 90%.

        Workspace analysis of 3-CPS parallel micro-manipulator for mirror active adjusting platform

        In order to adjust telescope mirrors with high precision, a 3 cylindrical-prismatic-spherical (CPS) parallel micro-manipulator with 6 degrees-of-freedom (DOF) and partial decoupling is proposed. Structure characteristics of the micro-manipulator were analyzed and the kinematic equations were derived based on Euler method. To avoid tedious derivation, Jacobian matrix with screw theory representing the input and output relation of micro-manipulator is established by using velocity influence coefficient method. Combining topological structure characteristics of the 3-CPS parallel micro-manipulator, the solving procedures of workspace are obtained. Moreover, the position workspace with a given orientation and the orientation workspace with a given translation position are constructed by numerical simulations. The workspace range is chosen as the optimization goal of structure parameters, and the circumcircle radius ratio of base and moving platform and the lengths of each sub-link are optimized. The maximum condition number and the minimum singular value are chosen as the precision indexes to analyze the precision performance of the workspace. Then, the properties of the position workspaces with various orientations and the orientation workspaces with various positions are simulated numerically, and the simulation results prove that the 3-CPS parallel micro-manipulator has an ability to achieve high precision operations. This research provides a workspace modeling and optimization method for the practical application in telescope mirror adjustment or other fields requiring high precision.

        The Effect of Transformation on the Virulence of Streptococcus pneumoniae

        Although pneumococcus is one of the most frequently encountered opportunistic pathogen in the world, the mechanisms responsible for its infectiveness have not yet been fully understood. In this paper, we have attempted to characterize the effects of pneumococcal transformation on the pathogenesis of the organism. We constructed three transformation-deficient pneumococcal strains, which were designated as Nos. 1d, 2d, and 22d. The construction of these altered strains was achieved via the insertion of the inactivated gene, comE, to strains 1, 2 and 22. We then conducted a comparison between the virulence of the transformation-deficient strains and that of the wild-type strains, via an evaluation of the ability of each strain to adhere to endothelial cells, and also assessed psaA mRNA expression, and the survival of hosts after bacterial challenge. Compared to what was observed with the wild-type strains, our results indicated that the ability of all of the transformation-deficient strains to adhere to the ECV304 cells had been significantly reduced (p < 0.05), the expression of psaA mRNA was reduced significantly (p < 0.05) in strains 2d and 22d, and the median survival time of mice infected with strains 1d and 2d was increased significantly after intraperitoneal bacterial challenge (p < 0.05). The results of our study also clearly indicated that transformation exerts significant effects on the virulence characteristics of S. pneumoniae, although the degree to which this effect is noted appears to depend primarily on the genetic background of the bacteria.

        Acid-doped polyaniline membranes for solar-driven interfacial evaporation

        Interface solar desalination technology is an important green and sustainable strategy to solve the freshwater crisis. Herein, polyaniline (PANI) membranes were prepared by immersion precipitation phase inversion (NIPs) method and using for solar-driven water evaporation. To improve the light absorption rate of the PANI membrane, acid doping modification was carried out to the membrane. The results show that the polyaniline-p-toluene sulfonic acid (PANI-PTSA) membrane modified by p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) has microporous structure, and the hydrophilicity was greatly improved after modification. The water evaporation rate and solar energy conversion efficiency of PANI-PTSA membrane were 1.38 kg/(m2h) and 80.7% under 1 kW/m2 sunlight irradiation, respectively, significantly improved compared to the original membrane. Due to the electrostatic repulsion effect of PANI-PTSA on anion charged SO − 3 , Na+ is separated from Cl−, which reduces the salt crystallization in the evaporator, indicating that PANI-PTSA membrane has certain salt resistance in solar desalination experiments. This work provides a simple method to prepare the PANI-PTSA membrane with high efficiency and salt resistance that has huge potential for practical application of interface solar desalination technology.
