      • LUXURY BRANDS SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING EFFORTS: INFLUENCE ON BRAND EQUITY AND CONSUMERS’ BEHAVIOR

        There is relatively little evidence on how social media marketing activities influence brand equity creation and consumers’ behavior towards the brand. We explore these relationships by analyzing pioneering brands in the luxury sector (Burberry, Dior, Gucci, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton). Based on a survey of 845 luxury brand consumers (Chinese, French, Indian and Italian) who follow the five brands studied on social media, we developed a structural equation model that helps to address gaps in prior social media branding literature. Specifically, our study demonstrates the links between social media marketing efforts – measured as a holistic concept incorporating five aspects (entertainment, interaction, trendiness, customization and word of mouth) and their consequences (brand preference, price premium and loyalty).

        Prognostic Factors and Decision Tree for Long-Term Survival in Metastatic Uveal Melanoma

        Purpose The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the existence of a bimodal survival pattern in metastatic uveal melanoma. Secondary aims were to identify the characteristics and prognostic factors associated with long-term survival and to develop a clinical decision tree. Materials and Methods The medical records of 99 metastatic uveal melanoma patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified as either short ( 12 months) or long-term survivors (> 12 months) based on a graphical interpretation of the survival curve after diagnosis of the first metastatic lesion. Ophthalmic and oncological characteristics were assessed in both groups. Results Of the 99 patients, 62 (62.6%) were classified as short-term survivors, and 37 (37.4%) as long-term survivors. The multivariate analysis identified the following predictors of long-term survival: age  65 years (p=0.012) and unaltered serum lactate dehydrogenase levels (p=0.018); additionally, the size (smaller vs. larger) of the largest liver metastasis showed a trend towards significance (p=0.063). Based on the variables significantly associated with long-term survival, we developed a decision tree to facilitate clinical decision-making. Conclusion The findings of this study demonstrate the existence of a bimodal survival pattern in patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. The presence of certain clinical characteristics at diagnosis of distant disease is associated with long-term survival. A decision tree was developed to facilitate clinical decision-making and to counsel patients about the expected course of disease.

        Modeling links between the decision-making process and luxury brand attachment: An international comparison

        This research aims to extend the analysis of the factors influencing consumer purchase of luxury goods. The effects of brand and country of origin (CoO) on the purchase decision are specifically considered. A total sample of 1103 respondents in seven countries (China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, USA) is analyzed through a structured questionnaire administered online. The research tests the scales of decision-making and brand attachment through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. It also tests the causal model of relationships between decision-making and luxury brand attachment. The richness of this research is related to the intercultural analysis of the results obtained in seven countries. These results concern the differences and similarities in: (1) defining the concept of country of origin (country of design, country of manufacture/country of assembly); (2) the combined effects of factors, including brand, CoO, price, guarantee, design and advertising, in the purchasing decision for luxury brands; and (3) the links between decision-making and attachment of the consumer to the luxury brand. The results are interesting in terms of management recommendations for a company that wishes to expand internationally into one of the geographic areas covered by this study, since significant differences are observed.

        Background: It is unknown if values of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) could predict complications in the immediate postoperative period in diabetic patients. Objective: To compare the incidence of immediate postoperative complications in diabetic patients with controlled (GC) vs. uncontrolled (GUC) HbA1c. Methods: Prospective cohort of type 2 diabetic patients, divided in 2 groups: GC (HbA1c = 7%) and GUC (HbA1c> 7%), followed for 30 days after major elective surgery, through 2012-2013. Considered complications were: readmissions, infections, cardiovascular events, stroke, and mortality. Results: 163 patients were enrolled: 75.5% (123) for GC and 24.5% (40) for GUC. Mean age was 66 years (SD:10) for GC, and 62 years (SD:13) for GUC. 54% and 60% were male for GC and GUC respectively. For GC, main surgeries were: urologic (23,6%); traumatologic (21,9%) and biliar (11.4%); for GUC main surgeries were: traumatologic (25%), urologic (22.5%) and bariatric (17.5%). Variables with no statistically significant differences between groups were: gender (p=0.48), age (p=0.06), Charlson co-morbidity score (p=0.69), BMI (p=0.33), current smoker (p=0.85) or ex-smoker (p=0.18), physical activity (p=0.97), hypertension (p=0.09), dyslipidemia (p=0.34), chronic renal failure (p=0.96), neoplasms (p=0.7), diabetic nephropathy (p=0,84), retinopathy (p=0.09), neuropathy (p=0.22) or peripheral vascular disease (p=0,82). Statistically significant difference was found for coronary disease, 31% vs. 15% (p=0.049), for GC and GUC respectively. The incidence for immediate postoperative complications in GC was 11.4% (14): 9 infections, 8 were readmitted and one cardiovascular event. In GUC, complication incidence was 17.5% (7): 4 infections, 4 readmissions, 1 stroke and 2 deaths. Crude HR control for complications was 0.65% (95%,CI:0,26-1.6, p=0,35). Discussion: Although we did not find a significant incidence of postoperative complications between controlled and uncontrolled groups, the uncontrolled group had more postoperative complications and survival curves were different, although without statistical significance.

        Comparative analysis of bond strength to root dentin and compression of bioceramic cements used in regenerative endodontic procedures

        Objectives This study compared the Biodentine, MTA Repair HP, and Bio-C Repair bioceramics in terms of bond strength to dentin, failure mode, and compression. Materials and Methods Fifty-four slices obtained from the cervical third of 18 single-rooted human mandibular premolars were randomly distributed (n = 18). After insertion of the bioceramic materials, the push-out test was performed. The failure mode was analyzed using stereomicroscopy. Another set of cylindrically-shaped bioceramic samples (n = 10) was prepared for compressive strength testing. The normality of data distribution was analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. The Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests were used for the push-out test data, while compressive strength was analyzed with analysis of variance and the Tukey test, considering a significance level of 0.05. Results Biodentine presented a higher median bond strength value (14.79 MPa) than MTA Repair HP (8.84 MPa) and Bio-C Repair (3.48 MPa), with a significant difference only between Biodentine and Bio-C Repair. In the Biodentine group, the most frequent failure mode was mixed (61%), while in the MTA Repair HP and Bio-C Repair groups, it was adhesive (94% and 72%, respectively). Biodentine showed greater resistance to compression (29.59 ± 8.47 MPa) than MTA Repair HP (18.68 ± 7.40 MPa) and Bio-C Repair (19.96 ± 3.96 MPa) (p < 0.05). Conclusions Biodentine showed greater compressive strength than MTA Repair HP and Bio-C Repair, and greater bond strength than Bio-C Repair. The most frequent failure mode of Biodentine was mixed, while that of MTA Repair HP and Bio-C Repair was adhesive.       • Raw data normalization for a multi source inverse geometry CT system

        <P>A multi-source inverse-geometry CT (MS-IGCT) system consists of a small 2D detector array and multiple x-ray sources. During data acquisition, each source is activated sequentially, and may have random source intensity fluctuations relative to their respective nominal intensity. While a conventional 3rd generation CT system uses a reference channel to monitor the source intensity fluctuation, the MS-IGCT system source illuminates a small portion of the entire field-of-view (FOV). Therefore, it is difficult for all sources to illuminate the reference channel and the projection data computed by standard normalization using flat field data of each source contains error and can cause significant artifacts. In this work, we present a raw data normalization algorithm to reduce the image artifacts caused by source intensity fluctuation. The proposed method was tested using computer simulations with a uniform water phantom and a Shepp-Logan phantom, and experimental data of an ice-filled PMMA phantom and a rabbit. The effect on image resolution and robustness of the noise were tested using MTF and standard deviation of the reconstructed noise image. With the intensity fluctuation and no correction, reconstructed images from simulation and experimental data show high frequency artifacts and ring artifacts which are removed effectively using the proposed method. It is also observed that the proposed method does not degrade the image resolution and is very robust to the presence of noise.</P>

        Metabolic adjustment of the larval fat body in Hermetia illucens to dietary conditions

        The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, has great economic importance because of its ability to degrade a wide variety of organic products, including vegetable waste. The conversion of organic waste into valuable nutrients, that can be isolated from larvae and prepupae, is a widely exploited strategy to produce protein for animal feed and, consequently, comprehending the mechanisms that regulate nutrient accumulation in this insect could improve the production of insect-derived meal quantitatively and qualitatively. Since the fat body participates in metabolizing proteins, fat, and sugars in insects, detailed knowledge of this organ and of its modifications in relation to insect food intake could provide interesting clues about the nutritional value of the larvae, a fundamental aspect from an applied perspective. To this end, we performed a morphofunctional and molecular characterization of the fat body of sixth instar H. illucens larvae reared on different food substrates, focusing on markers related to nutrient accumulation. We demonstrate that a protein-poor diet affects both lipid and protein accumulation in fat body cells as well as the expression of key genes involved in these metabolic processes. Our study not only represents the first characterization of the larval fat body in this insect, but also confirms the central role of this organ in nutrient accumulation and substantiates the hypothesis of producing larvae with higher nutritional value by manipulating the diet.

        Protective Effect of Glycomacropeptide on the Atopic Dermatitis-Like Dysfunctional Skin Barrier in Rats

        The maintenance of a healthy skin barrier is crucial to prevent and treat atopic dermatitis (AD) lesions and avoid infections. Glycomacropeptide (GMP) is a bioactive peptide that has demonstrated promising results as an anti-inflammatory and antipruritic therapy for experimental AD. This study aimed to analyze the effect of GMP on impaired cutaneous barrier-related signs in a rat model of AD lesions. AD-like dermatitis was induced on the skin by repeated topical applications of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, and animals were orally administered GMP before or after AD induction. The expression of skin structural proteins and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) was evaluated by immunoblot or immunohistochemistry, epidermal thickening was evaluated by histochemistry, the level of IFN-γ and changes in the microbiota were evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the quantity of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was evaluated by gas chromatography. GMP administration significantly increased filaggrin, β-defensin 2, and cathelicidin-related AMP expression in AD-like lesions. Involucrin expression was not modified. In GMP-treated animals, epidermal thickening and IFN-γ expression were strongly reduced in damaged skin. GMP treatment impacted the skin microbiota and prevented Staphylococcus aureus colonization, which is associated with AD. In addition, high levels of Bifidobacterium were detected in the feces of GMP-treated animals, and the acetic acid and butyric acid contents increased in animals prophylactically administered GMP. These results suggest that GMP markedly prevents or reverses skin barrier damage in rat AD-like lesions through a bifidogenic effect that induces fecal SCFA production with prolonged treatment. Our findings provide evidence that GMP may represent an optimum strategy for the therapy of the dysfunctional cutaneous barrier in AD.
