Vertically anisotropically conductive composites with aligned chain-of-spheres of 20 - 75 μm Ni particles in an elastomer matrix have been prepared by curing the mixture at 100°C - 150°C under an applied magnetic field of ~300 - 1000 Oe. The particles are coated with a ~120 nm thick Au layer for enhanced electrical conductivity. The resultant vertically aligned but laterally isolated columns of conductive particles extend through the whole composite thickness and the end of the Ni columns protrude from the surface, contributing to enhanced electrical contact on the composite surface. The stress-strain curve on compressive deformation exhibits a nonlinear behavior with a rapidly increasing Young's modulus with stress (or pressure). The electrical contact resistance Rc decreases rapidly when the applied pressure is small and then more gradually after the applied pressure reaches 500 psi (~3.4 MPa), corresponding to a 30% deformation. The directionally conductive elastomer composite material with metal pads and conductive electrodes on the substrate surface can be used as a convenient tactile shear sensor for applications involving artificial limbs, robotic devices, and other visual communication devices such as touch sensitive screens.

Recently mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and two-spotted cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) have been studied intensively as alternative protein sources. In order to improve the digestion and absorption of edible insect protein, it is necessary to reduce the molecular weight like peptides and amino acids. Therefore, in this study, we obtained low molecular weight hydrolysate extract (HIE) by high pressure processing (HPP) and enzymatic hydrolysis of mealworms and tow-spotted crickets to enhance the bioavailability of edible insect proteins. And the antioxidant and ant-inflammatory properties of insect hydrolysis extract (HIE) were evaluated to determine bioavailability of hydrolysates. 1)HIE had higher radical scavenging capacities than unprocessed insects. In addition, HIE enhanced DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities in LPS-induced Raw 264.7 cells than unprocessed insects. Moreover, 2)HIE treatment significantly reduced LPS-inducible cytokine productions in both transcriptional and post-translational manners cells than unprocessed insects in murine macrophage cells. Therefore, HIE may be delivered effectively to increase their anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties.
Current multicenter clinical trials in Korea - Introduction to KGOG
( Chulmin Lee ) 대한산부인과학회 2019 대한산부인과학회 학술대회 Vol.105 No.-
Clinical trials are booming in Asian countries through recent years. The trials registered on clinicaltrials.gov shows that Asian countries comprise 15% of all trials since 2000 which ranks Asia on third position after North America and Europe and is still counting. This may be safely interpreted as Asian popularity is becoming more important in medical investigations and in global effort of fight against specific disease such as cancer. And research competence is getting stronger in Asia as well. The Korean Gynecologic Oncology Group (KGOG) was established in 2003 and has expanded its research capabilities blazingly fast. KGOG is actively engaged in number of trials with NRG oncology, keeps partnership with GCIG and more. One of the big collaboration with GOG was GOG 213 trial which was published in 2018. It was about whether to use bevacizumab after secondary cytoreduction in platinum- sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer and the participants from South Korea reached 43.7% out of 485 total enrollment. KGOG is currently involved in number of legacy GOG studies such as GOG 237, 278, 263, 265, RTOG 0724 and GCIG trials such as TACO, SHAPE. KGOG is recently continuing its collaboration with North Americans with NRG-005 and NRG-018 while actively proposing new concepts. KGOG also has active domestic protocols about early cervical cancer detection, novel approach to cervical cancer such as metformin, fertility-sparing in early endometrial cancer, and evaluation of HIPEC. Target therapies and immunologic drugs are also actively investigated by home-grown protocols. The bird's eye view of individual representative trials will be presented. KGOG is forging important trials within Asia as well. Durvalumab in recurrent ovarian clear cell cancer (MOCCA trial), upfront surgery versus neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced ovarian cancer (SUNNY trial), opting out adjuvant chemotherapy in early ovarian cancer (JGOG 3020) are a few examples of collaboration currently on-going among Asian countries. Asia is unique in ethnicity and different in constitution from other regions hence results from previous trials performed mostly in western countries should be carefully vetted and interpreted as such. And it is yet another reason clinical trials in Asia are poised to increase. As Asia is contributing in every aspect globally, now is the time that Asians should come together in fight against gynecologic cancer.

Background: Atopic dermatitis is a global public health concern owing to its increasing prevalence and socioeconomic burden. However, few studies have assessed the economic impact of atopic dermatitis in Korea. Objective: We conducted a cost analysis of atopic dermatitis and evaluated its economic impacts on individual annual disease burden, quality of life, and changes in medical expenses with respect to changes in health related-quality of life. Methods: The cost analysis of atopic dermatitis was performed by reviewing the home accounting records of 32 patients. The economic impact of the disease was evaluated by analyzing questionnaires. To handle uncertainties, we compared the results with the data released by the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Board on medical costs claimed by healthcare facilities. Results: The direct cost of atopic dermatitis per patient during the 3-month study period was 541,280 Korean won (KRW), and expenditures on other atopic dermatitis-related products were 120,313 KRW. The extrapolated annual direct cost (including expenditures on other atopic dermatitis- related products) per patient was 2,646,372 KRW. The estimated annual indirect cost was 1,507,068 KRW. Thus, the annual cost of illness of atopic dermatitis (i.e., direct+indirect costs) was estimated to be 4,153,440 KRW. Conclusion: The Ann Dermatol annual total social cost of atopic dermatitis on a national level is estimated to be 5.8 trillion KRW. (Ann Dermatol 27(3) 298∼ 305, 2015)
A Perspective of the Wearing-off Phenomenon in a Patient with Parkinson’s Disease: A Case Report
Chulmin Park,Kyoung Tae Kim 대한연하장애학회 2023 대한연하장애학회지 Vol.13 No.1
Dysphagia is a major disability in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Unlike typical motor symptoms, dysphagia is relatively unresponsive to dopaminergic drugs. However, occasionally, swallowing difficulties are much improved by dopaminergic agonists and significantly affected by on/off periods. In such cases, it is difficult to assess the severity of dysphagia accurately if swallowing function evaluation is performed without considering the wearing-off phenomenon in patients with PD. Here, we report a case of dysphagia in a female patient with Parkinson’s disease that was severely affected by the wearing-off phenomenon in response to prolonged use of levodopa. The patient presented with severe oral phase delay with choking symptoms during fluid intake. A videofluoroscopic swallow study performed during an ‘off-period’ showed massive aspiration with severely impaired swallowing function. However, when swallowing evaluation was performed during the ‘on-period’, almost no abnormal function was observed. After adopting an on/off period-tailored diet prescription, sufficient nutrition was possible without aspiration. Consideration of the wearing-off phenomenon is essential when evaluating swallowing function in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Patient-specific swallowing evaluations and diet prescriptions are needed to establish optimal therapeutic strategies.
