Protein Profile in Corpus Luteum during Pregnancy in Korean Native Cows

Steroidogenesis requires coordination of the anabolic and catabolic pathways of lipid metabolism, but the profile of proteins associated with progesterone synthesis in cyclic and pregnant corpus luteum (CL) is not well-known in cattle. In Experiment 1, plasma progesterone level was monitored in cyclic cows (n = 5) and pregnant cows (n = 6; until d-90). A significant decline in the plasma progesterone level occurred at d-19 of cyclic cows. Progesterone level in abbatoir-derived luteal tissues was also determined at d 1 to 5, 6 to 13 and 14 to 20 of cyclic cows, and d-60 and -90 of pregnant cows (n = 5 each). Progesterone level in d-60 CL was not different from those in d 6 to 13 CL and d-90 CL, although the difference between d 6 to 13 and d-90 was significant. In Experiment 2, protein expression pattern in CL at d-90 (n = 4) was compared with that in CL of cyclic cows at d 6 to 13 (n = 5). Significant changes in the level of protein expression were detected in 32 protein spots by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE), and 23 of them were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Six proteins were found only in pregnant CL, while the other 17 proteins were found only in cyclic CL. Among the above 6 proteins, vimentin which is involved in the regulation of post-implantation development was included. Thus, the protein expression pattern in CL was disorientated from cyclic luteal phase to mid pregnancy, and alterations in specific CL protein expression may contribute to the maintenance of pregnancy in Korean native cows.

In this work, we present the comparison between d<SUB>31</SUB> and d<SUB>33</SUB> mode characterization using the PZT micro-actuator for large displacement. The PZT micro-actuator consisted of Si, PZT, and Pt layer on SOI wafer. The electrode shapes were laminated and interdigitated for d<SUB>31</SUB> and d<SUB>33</SUB> mode, respectively. In order to characterize the actuation mode, we measured the displacement using laser interferometer. The maximum displacement of d<SUB>31</SUB> mode was 12.2㎛ at 10V, the actuation characterization of d<SUB>31</SUB> was better than that of d<SUB>33</SUB> mode. We estimated that displacement of d<SUB>33</SUB> mode would be larger than that of d<SUB>31</SUB> above 30V.
Association of Sequence Variations in DGAT 1 Gene with Economic Traits in Hanwoo (Korea Cattle)

The effects of diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT1) candidate gene polymorphism on the economic traits of Hanwoo were studied. Through sequencing analysis, two polymorphism sites at K232A and T11993C were established and were analyzed by PCR-RFLP. The PCR-RFLP analysis for K232A showed that the frequencies of alleles K and A were 0.75 and 0.25, respectively, and the frequencies of genotypes for K/K, K/A and A/A were estimated as 0.509, 0.491 and 0, respectively. In the PCR-RFLP analysis for T11993C, we found allele frequencies of 0.773 and 0.227 for T and A, respectively, and 0.546, 0.454 and 0 for the T/T, T/C and C/C genotype frequencies, respectively. No significant effects on economic traits in Hanwoo were found in the separate analysis of K232A and T11993C polymorphisms, but the interaction between K232A and T11993C showed a significant effect (p<0.005) on marbling score. The DGAT1 candidate gene was found to have a significant effect not only on milk yield and component traits but also on the metabolism of intramuscular fat.

The dielectric properties and the behavior of phase transition in the NaxK1xNbO3 ceramic system were investigated. The temperature and composition parameter (x ) dependence of the dielectric constants and the loss tangent of the system were measured. The dielectric constant was the highest and the loss tangent of the sample was the lowest at x = 0.52. The dielectric constant of Na0:52K0:48NbO3 ceramics becomes broadened and the transition temperature shifts toward a higher temperature with an increase in the measuring frequency at the Curie temperature. The remanent polarization (Pr) and coercive eld (Ec) were obtained from the D-E hysteresis loop at room temperature. A typical hysteresis loop of a sample of composition parameter x = 0.52 exhibits a remanent polarization of 10 C/cm2 and a coercive eld of 8.4 kV/cm.
Nutritive and Economic Values of Corn Distiller's Dried Grains with Solubles in Broiler Diets

A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of the addition of corn distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to broiler diets on growth performance and meat characteristics. A total of 3,200 d-old, unsexed Cobb-500 broiler chicks were randomly allotted to 16 pens (replicates), with 200 chicks per pen. There were four diet treatments (0, 5, 10, and 15% DDGS), and four replicates per treatment. From 8 to 21 d of age, the birds were fed broiler starter diets containing similar energy (TMEn 3,100 kcal/kg) and protein (21.6%) contents. From 22 to 35 d of age, they were fed grower diets containing similar nutrients (3,150 kcal/kg, 19.5% crude protein). No significant difference was found in growth performances among the four treatments. As the DDGS level increased, the concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in meat increased (p<0.05). The color scores of breast and thigh muscles were not significantly influenced by DDGS, however, the yellowness of shank increased significantly by the addition of DDGS. The hardness of breast and thigh meats was not affected by the addition of DDGS. It was shown that the use of DDGS in broiler diets up to 15% could decrease the feed cost by replacing part of corn and soybean meal, without any negative effect on growth performance and meat qualities.

Stille coupling polymerization has been used to synthesize a series of new crystalline conjugated polymers with low-lying HOMO level: PABToBT, PPDToBT, PQTDPT. All of these polymers exhibited sufficient energy offsets with respect to those of fullerenes to allow efficient charge transfer and low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), from -5.04 to -5.27eV. As a result, the photovoltaic device comprising a PPDToBT/PC<SUB>71</SUB>BM (1:4) blend system exhibited excellent performance, under AM1.5 G irradiation, with a V<SUB>OC</SUB> of 0.878V, a J<SUB>SC</SUB> of 8.7mAcm<SUP>-2</SUP>, a FF of 0.51, and a promising PCE of 3.9%.

Twenty four types of thermopile for micro spectrometer infrared sensors were fabricated on low-stress Si_(3)N_(4) membranes with 1.2㎛-thickness using MEMS technology. Thermopile were designed and fabricated for optimum conditions by five parameters of thermocouple numbers (16∼48), thermocouple line widths (10㎛∼25㎛), thermocouple lengths (100㎛∼500㎛), membrane areas (1^(2)㎟∼2.5^(2)㎟) and junction areas (150㎛^(2) 2∼750㎛^(2)), respectively. It was thought that measurement results could be used for thermopile infrared sensors optimum structure for micro spectrometers.
