Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Presenting as Intracardiac Mass: A Rare Presentation

Caryn Tsujean Lim,Yik Hon Ho,Hwei Sung Ling,Bui Khiong Chung,Grace Wan Chieng Lee,Tze Shin Leong,Yen Yee Oon,Lee Ping Chew 아시아심장혈관영상의학회 2023 Cardiovascular Imaging Asia Vol.7 No.1

Primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) comprises of 1%–2% of primary cardiac tumors. This case report describes a rare case of PCL with rapid disease progression. A 51-year-old female presented with 6 months of dyspnea. Her transthoracic echocardiogram showed a large exudative circumferential pericardial effusion and bi-atrial masses. An endovascular tissue biopsy using intra-cardiac echocardiography guidance enabled the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Staging computed tomography staged the disease at Ann Arbor stage IV E. She achieved a complete response to rituximab, cyclophosphamide, hydroxydaunorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone chemoimmunotherapy.

      • Patient-Centredness, Job Satisfaction and Psychological Distress: a Brief Survey Comparing Oncology Nurses and Doctors

Chan, Caryn Mei Hsien,Ahmad, Wan Azman Wan,Yusof, Mastura MD,Ho, Gwo Fuang,Krupat, Edward Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.16

Background: We aimed to explore whether levels of patient-centredness, job satisfaction and psychological distress varied between oncology nurses and doctors. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study using self-administered questionnaires, a total of 24 nurses and 43 doctors were assessed for patient-centredness, psychological distress, and job satisfaction using the Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Job Satisfaction Scale. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test and MANCOVA, with p<0.05 considered significant. Results: Overall response rate was 95.6% (43/45) for physicians and 85.7% (24/28) for nurses. Even after adjusting for known covariates, our principal finding was that doctors reported greater psychological distress compared to nurses (p=0.009). Doctors also reported lower job satisfaction compared to nurses (p = 0.017), despite higher levels of patient-centredness found in nurses (p=0.001). Findings may be explained in part by differences in job characteristics and demands. Conclusions: Mental health is an important concern not just in cancer patients but among healthcare professionals in oncology.

Sleeping with Beauty: Romantic Love, Sex, Power and the Construction of Femininity in Hetrosexual Young Adult Relationshipa

Louise vincent, Caryn McEwen 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2005 Asian Women Vol.20 No.-

This article draws on solicited diary entries detailing the lives and lovesigher education in South Africa. The research participants are ocupants of a privileged place in society with aces to education, and a midle -class lifestyle, have control over their reproductive functioning, are not wives, mothers or homempotentially have access to fulfilling, status-rich and materialy rewarding occupations which make independence both of their parental families and of male partners a real possibility. Theirs then, is a world of information, choice and the emergence of a critical gender consciousness, it might be of these women. One way of gauging the extent of the emergence of a critical consciousness among women is to examine the extent to which, in the stories they tell about their intimate and structure of the traditional romance genre and in particular, to the positioning of themselves in their stories as passive, submisive, dependent subjects while their partners are dominant and active. The present article argues that far from the d empowered women in the study remain locked into romantic naratives of love with their concomitant passive construction of femininity. In a social context characterised by putative sexual emancipation, these young women find themselves in the l and gender politics while at the same time living a reality of feminine oppression.

Sleeping with Beauty : Romantic Love, Sex, Power and the Construction of Femininity in Heterosexual Young Adult Relationships

Louise Vincent,Caryn McEwen Research Institute of Asian Women Sookmyung Women' 2005 Asian Women Vol.20 No.-

This article draws on solicited diary entries detailing the lives and loves of eight young undergraduate women at an elite institution of higher education in South Africa. The research participants are occupants of a privileged place in society with access to education, and a middle-class lifestyle, have control over their reproductive functioning, are not wives, mothers or homemakers, and potentially have access to fulfilling, status-rich and materially rewarding occupations which make independence both of their parental families and of male partners a real possibility. Theirs then, is a world of information, choice and opportunity and if of anyone at all in society we would predict the emergence of a critical gender consciousness, it might be of these woman. One way of gauging the extent of the emergence of a critical consciousness among women is to examine the extent to which, in the stories they tell about their intimate relationships, they depart from, or conform to both the content and structure of the traditional romance genre and in particular, to the positioning of themselves in their stories as passive, submissive, dependent subjects while their partners are dominant and active. The present article argues that far from the democratisation of intimacy, the young, seemingly privileged and empowered women in the study remain locked into romantic narratives of love with their concomitant passive construction of femininity. In a social context characterised by putative sexual emancipation, these young women find themselves in the unenviable position of having to play a game of liberated sexual and gender politics while at the same time living a reality of feminine oppression.

Epiphora by Non-viral Squamous Papilloma of the Conjunctiva in a Dog

        김주리,최을수,caryn E. Plummer,Dennis E. Brooks,김민수 한국임상수의학회 2014 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.31 No.4

A 12-year-old mixed breed male dog was referred to Chonbuk National University Animal Medical Centerwith unilateral left epiphora. Magnified ophthalmic examination revealed a very small tissue mass on the palpebralconjunctiva of the left eye. The mass was surgically removed and microscopic examination confirmed moderate papillaryhyperplasia of the squamous epithelium without viral cytopathic effects. Based on the histology, the mass was diagnosedas a non-viral squamous papilloma. After removal of the mass, the epiphora was completely solved. This case reportdescribes the non-viral squamous papilloma arising from the conjunctiva in a dog with epiphora.

Studies on the storage stability of fermented red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) drink

Kah Yee Choo,Caryn Kho,Renee Lay Hong Lim,Chun Wai Ho,Yien Yien Ong,Yin Yin Thoo,Chin Ping Tan 한국식품과학회 2018 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.27 No.5

The objective of this work was to study the effect of storage temperatures and duration on the stability of fermented red dragon fruit drink (FRDFD) on its betacyanins content, physicochemical and microbiological qualities (BPM) and determining sensory acceptability. Results showed that both storage temperatures and duration have a significant effect on betacyanins content and physicochemical properties of FRDFD. Aerobic mesophilic and yeast and mold counts were lower than 1 9 103 CFU/ mL for FRDFD stored at both temperatures. The loss of betanin (16.53–13.93 g/L) at 4 C was 15.73% with no significant changes in physicochemical properties from week two onwards compared to 56.32% (16.53–7.22 g/L) of betanin loss at 25 C. At week eight, FRDFD stored at 4 C still contained 13.93 g/L betanin with a pH value of 3.46, suggested its potential as a functional drink which is sensory acceptable (mean score[80% using hedonic test) among consumers.

        Periocular Myxoma in a Dog

        배재현,김주리,권승주,Caryn Plummer,Kim Hillers,김민수 한국임상수의학회 2020 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.37 No.1

A 1-year-old castrated male Shih-Tzu dog presented with severe orbital swelling involving the right eye. Physical examination identified a painless swelling of the right periocular tissues and protrusion of the third eyelid. Radiographic examination revealed a well-delineated, spherical (3 × 3 cm) soft tissue mass. Ultrasonography confirmed a hypoechoic, multilobular, tubular cystic structure with hyperechoic foci. Fine needle aspiration was conducted and the cytologic impression revealed copious mucus, increased neutrophilic leucocytes, and foamy macrophages. Th tentative diagnosis was zygomatic sialocele, and the lesion was resected through lateral orbitotomy. Surgical exploration identified a multilobular mass adhering to the zygomatic glands. Both the zygomatic gland and the mass were removed. Histological findings were consistent with those of an inflamed myxoma. No postoperative recurrence occurred within 1 year.

      • Symptom Prevalence and Related Distress in Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy

Thiagarajan, Muthukkumaran,Chan, Caryn Mei Hsien,Fuang, Ho Gwo,Beng, Tan Seng,Atiliyana, MA,Yahaya, NA Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.1

Background: Much has been done to examine the psychological impact of cancer treatment, but it remains unclear to what extent anxiety and depression is related to symptom prevalence. The present study concerned the characteristics and frequency of distress as related to symptom prevalence in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in Malaysia. Materials and Methods: Participants were 303 consecutive adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in an academic medical center. The short form Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS-SF), which covers three domains of symptoms (global distress, physical- and psychological symptoms) was used to cross-sectionally measure symptom frequency and associated distress via self-reporting. One-way ANOVA and t-tests were used to test mean differences among MSAS-SF subscale scores. Results: Complete data were available for 303 patients. The mean number of symptoms was 14.5. The five most prevalent were fatigue, dry mouth, hair loss, drowsiness and lack of appetite. Overall, symptom burden and frequency were higher than in other published MSAS-SF studies. Higher symptom frequency was also found to be significantly related to greater distress in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Conclusions: Patients undergoing chemotherapy suffer from multiple physical and psychological symptoms. Better symptom control or palliative care is needed. Greater frequency of reported symptoms may also indicate a subconscious bid by patients for care and reassurance - thus tailored intervention to manage distress should be offered.

IOP change undergoing anesthesia in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) with laser-induced ocular hypertension.

Kim, Jury,Sapp, Harold L,Plummer, Caryn E,Brooks, Dennis E,Kim, Daeyoung,Kim, Min-Su The Society ; Maruzen Co. [distributor] 2012 The Journal of veterinary medical science Vol.74 No.10

The objective of the study was to examine changes of intraocular pressure (IOP) undergoing anesthesia in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta) with Laser-induced Ocular Hypertension. Twenty male rhesus macaques (hypertensive glaucoma eye in OD; normal eye in OS) between 6 and 20 years of age were used for the study. The monkeys were anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg intramuscularly) and 1% isoflurane, and then IOP in both eyes was measured by a single investigator using a calibrated Tonopen(TM) applanation tonometer (Mentor, Norwell, MA, U.S.A.). The mean IOP with ketamine anesthesia was 36.70 12.04 (right eye: OD) and 15.88 2.84 (left eye: OS). The mean IOP with isoflurane anesthesia was 19.98 6.67 (right eye: OD) and 15.32 2.15 (left eye: OS). Undergoing isoflurane anesthesia, the IOP of OD was significantly decreased. Conclusively, careful examination of IOP is required to prevent unexpected contraindication on glaucoma patient with isoflurane anesthesia.
