        Pathologic Features of a Systemic Dirofilariasis in a Dog

        Canine heartworm disease is typically characterized by the presence of heartworms in the pulmonary artery and, to a lesser degree, the right ventricle. Systemic arterial dirofilariasis is an unusual manifestation of heartworm disease of dogs that results from aberrant migration of Dirofilaria immitis into the peripheral arterial circulation. A three-year-old Jindo dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Center because of hindlimb lameness, paresthesia of hindlimbs, and interdigital ischemic necrosis. Angiography and ultrasonography were performed, resulting in diagnosis of heartworm infestation. In necropsy, entangled heartworms were present throughout the body, including lungs, kidney, small intestinal lumen, and arteries, in addition to the right ventricle and pulmonary artery. Histologically, lung showed adult heart worms in vessels, organized thrombotic vessels, and interstitial pneumonia featuring type II pneumocyte hyperplasia, thickened alveolar wall, and compressed alveolar spaces. Chronic parenchymal lesions, such as focal or diffuse necrosis, fibrosis, and dystrophic calcification were remarkable in liver and kidney. The current case showed a typical canine systemic heartworm disease caused by aberrant migration of Dirofilaria immitis.

        A Case of Pulmonary Fibrosis with Lung Lobe Torsion in a Pekinese Dog

        Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is defined as a gradual, interstitial fibrous disease of the lung parenchyma. PF causes collapse of the lung lobe, which can lead to lung lobe torsion of the other side. A 14-year-old male Pekinese dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Center, Chungbuk National University. The chief complaint was acute dyspnea. The dog had a history of chronic cough, which lasted for 18 months, and the cough had recently deteriorated. Tachypnea was observed on physical examination. As a result of thoracic radiographs, ultrasonography, and computed tomography, lung lobe torsion and collapse were diagnosed. A postmortem examination revealed lung lobe torsion of the left cranial lobe and carnification of the right cranial lobe. Histologically, severe and diffuse interstitial fibrosis with distortion of alveolar architecture and severe congestion and/or hemorrhage were observed in the right cranial lobe and left cranial lobe, respectively. Although the cause of pulmonary fibrosis was undetermined, this case showed a typical lung lobe torsion caused by pulmonary fibrosis.

      • 홍익인간 사상의 역사성과 문화사적 이해

        홍익인간은 대한민국의 건국이념이자 교육이념이다. 홍익인간에 대한 기록은 『삼국유사三國遺事』「고조선기古朝鮮紀」에 처음 등장하며, 환국의 환인천제가 환웅이 탐구인세의 뜻을 품고 동방 태백산으로 이주할 때 홍익인간의 세상을 건설하라고 내려준 것이다. 우리가 알고 있는 단군신화는 실은 환웅천황이 홍익인간의 꿈을 이루고자 웅족과 호족을 교화하여 광명을 회복한 태일의 인간으로 만들어 준 이야기로서 우리민족의 창세역사이다. 홍익인간은 환국의 환인천제가 처음 환웅에게 내려준 것으로 환웅은 이 홍익인간 네 자를 바탕으로 일신강충, 성통광명, 재세이화가 더해진 <포념지표布念之標>를 만들어 배달의 국민교육이념으로 삼았다. 즉 <포념지표>란 일신강충, 성통광명, 재세이화, 홍익인간 16자를 말한다. 나중에 단군조선으로 전수된 <포념지표>는 11세 도해단군에 이르러 천지인의 창조정신을 대원일 사상으로 드러낸 <염표문>으로 완성되었다. <염표문>은 일신이 인간 머릿속에 내려와 있고 인간의 본성은 광명에 통해 있어 모든 인간은 광명을 되찾을 때 태일의 인간이 될 수 있으며, 전 세계인류를 태일의 인간이 되도록 인도함으로써 홍익인간 세상을 건설할 수 있다는 것으로서 한민족의 신관과 우주관, 인간관을 종합적으로 이해할 수 있는 가르침이다. 이에 홍익인간이 출현하게 된 역사적·문화적 맥락을 살펴보고 <염표문> 16자에 대한 종합적인 검토를 통하여 홍익인간의 참뜻에 대하여 고찰하였다. Hong-ik-in-gan is an ideal of the nation founding and that of the education of Korea. Its first appearance is seen at Annals of Ancient Joseon in Samguk-yusa. It was given to Hwanung, the prince of Hwanguk state from his father the Jiwiri Hwanin, the last emperor of Hwanguk as an ideal of new world construction when he had departed his homeland Hwanguk for the top of Taebaeksan mountain with great will of salvation of human world. The mythology of Dangun, generally known as a kind of fiction is actually a history of Korean ancient nation founding and a story of indigenous people who acquired enlightment introduced by Hwanung, the 1st Emperor of Baedal state. Hong-ik-in-gan which literally means ‘to give benefits to all humans’ was originated from the 7th Emperor Hwanin and was given to his son Hwanung. And the teaching of Hong-ik-in-gan was completed as Yeompyo-mun by adding 3 phrases Il-shin-gangchung, Seong-tong-kwang-myeong and Jae-se-li-hwa to the Hong-ik-in-gan, which was transferred to Dangun Joseon by last Emperor Hwanung. In this study, the deep implications of Hong-ik-in-gan was investigated by analyzing the meaning of Yeompyo-mun. And finally, the principle of meditation for recovering the true nature of human was discussed by understanding the descriptions in Samilshingo which was introduced by 1st Emperor Hwanung.

      • 이홍범의 『아시아 이상주의』고찰

        역사는 그 사회의 문화에서 창출되므로 역사를 알고자 하면 반드시 그 문화를 먼저 알아야 한다. 역사를 접근하는 방법이다. 그런 측면에서 본다면 동북아시아 고대사 왜곡문제로 빚어진 작금의 한‧중‧일 역사전쟁은 고대 동북아시아 뿌리문화의 실체와 주인공을 규명함으로써만이 해결될 수 있는 것이다. 고대 역사‧문화의 가장 핵심적인 술어는 천자국이다. 천자는 최고통치자를 말하며, 천자가 다스리는 나라가 천자국이요 역사‧문화의 종주권을 가진 나라이다. 역사에 기록된 최초의 천자는 치우이다. 배달국 14세 자오지 환웅천황을 이르는 치우가 천자라는 사실은 환국, 배달, 고조선이 모두 천자국임을 말한다. 천자문화가 우주를 통치하는 천제(천신, 상제)를 숭배하고 천제를 올리는 문화에서 나온 것임을 상기한다면 통치자이면서 제사장 역할을 겸한 환인, 환웅, 단군은 한민족의 삼성조로서 바로 그 문화의 주인공 들이다. 홍익인간, 재세이화는 천자문화에서 유래한 통치자의 심법전수로서 한민족을 대표하는 이상주의의 표상이다. 본고에서는 이홍범의 『아시아 이상주의』를 고찰하면서 천자문화의 뿌리와 위상에 대하여 논하였다. 또한 동학의 시천주문화야말로 상고시대의 신교문화를 계승하여 무극대도 이상세계의 도래를 설파한 이상주의의 전형임을 논하였다. Since history is based on the culture of a society, the understanding about the culture is a prerequisite to reveal the real history of the society. This is a general sense to approach the problem of history. Hence, the present history struggles between Korea and China could be resolved by revealing the reality and the leader of the primordial culture in ancient East Asia. The key word to understand the history and culture of ancient East Asia is thought to be ‘suzerain state (Emperor state, 天子國 )’. Emperor, the original meaning is ‘the Son of Heaven’ was the supreme leader. The state ruled by Emperor was the suzerain state which had the suzerainty in history and culture. The first emperor recorded in a history book was Chiwoo. The fact that Chiwoo was the 14th king Jaoji Hwanung in Baedal means all the lineage states including Hwanguk( 桓 國 ), Baedal( 倍達 ) and Ancient Choson( 古朝鮮 ) are the suzerain states. Reminding the fact that the culture of Emperor was based on the culture revering the Heavenly God, Hwanin, Hwanung and Dangun as a ruler and a chief priest are the very leaders of the culture. Hong-ik-in-gan ( 弘益人間 ) and Jae-se-yi-hwa ( 在世理化 ), the supreme humanitarianism of Korea are the symbol of Korean millenarianism, simultaneously the learning of Mind Dharma for Emperors. In the present article, I discussed the origin of the Emperor culture and its cultural status, reviewing the 『Asian millenarianism』 written by Hong Beom Rhee in 2007. Moreover, the culture of Shicheonju ( 侍天主 ) in Eastern Learning ( 東學 ) which had succeeded the ancient Shingyo ( 神敎 ) was discussed as a typical millenarianism which had declared the coming millenarian world of mugeukdaedo ( 無極大道 ).

      • 실험적 간발암 및 폐전이에 관한 병리학적 연구

        사람 간암발생의 주된 원인은 설치류와는 달리 바이러스성 간염과 곰팡이독소 아플라톡신의 식이상 섭취와 관련이 깊다. 이는 만성땀증으로 인한 세포독성자 염증과정 중에 산생되는 여러 생리활성인자의 BNA 손상이 중요함을 시사하는 것익다. 대부분의 간암실험 모질은 설치류의 간세포가 바이러스에 친화선이 없기 때문에 발암물질을 주로 이용하고 있으며 지속적인 세포손상 효파를 유도하면 발암효과가 개선될 것이라는 것이 우리의 가설이다. '97년도에 삼투압 펌프(osmotic mini pump, Alzet,USA)를 이용한 발암물질의 미량 연속주입(continuous infusion)이 단기간내에 효과적으로 간암을 유발함으로써 그 가설의 타당성을 확인하엿고, 계속하여 보다 낮은 농도와 노출기간의 단축시에도 같은 효과를 보이는가의 여부와 소량의 반복적인 복강투여가 고농도 1혹 튼여와 차이를 보이는지 착인하고자 하였다. 28주 무에 관찰된 종양의 발생률은 DEN 38mg/rat을 투여한 1군에서는 25%(5/20), 19mg/rat을 투여한 2군 에서는 10%(2/20), D로N 5emg/kg을 3회 복강(ip)으로 투여한3군에서는 35%(7/20) 이었다. 본 실험에서 발생한종양의 형태는 간세포종과 간세포암종이었으며 담판상피세포유래 종양은 관찰되지 않았다. 47.5mg의 DEN을 삼투압펌프로 튼여하였을 매 높은 간All포암종의 발생과 폐전이를 보였던 전년도의 결과와 비교해 볼 때 이러한 결과는 세포독성을 유발하는 용량을 적용할 때 종양이 보다 효과적으로 유발됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 간암조직에서 실시한 면역조직화학적 염색에서 iNOS는 선형 간세포암종(glandular hepatocellular carcinoma), 담관종(cholangioma), 증식성 난원세포(proliferative oval cell), 모세혈관내피세포 및 평활근 세포 등에서 특이적으로 발현되었고,peroxynitrite 작용의 지표인자인 3-nitrotyrosiEe은 iNOS가 발현된 세포에 이웃한 조직과 세포에서 발현되었다.이러한 iNO즈와 nitrotyrosine의 발현은 첫째, iNOS는 간암조직에서 특수한 표현형을 가진 세포웨 표자인자 (phenotypic marlter)일 수 있음을 암시하며 , 둘째, iNOS가 특이적으로 란찰된 난원세포, 선형 간세포암종세포. 담 관종세포 등은 공통적인 기원세포를 가지는 것으로 사료되며, 세째, 종양의직에서 iNOS에 의하여 과다하게 생산된 NO는 혈관신생과 세포분화과정에 개입하여 종양의 성장을 촉진하는 것으로 추측된다. Human liver cancers have been associated mainly with chronic inflammations such as viral hepatitis B or C. Th=is suggests that prolonged cell damage by chronic inflammation is critical incancer developmeat. Overfroduction of nitric oxide (NO) and its derivative (NOx, peroxynitrit'e) hasbeen impticated as a cause of tissue damage by inflammation, frhus contributing to turner proluotioB. Ingeneral, chemical carcinogens are used in most of experimental hepatocarcinogenesis since hepatitisvirus does not have hepatotrophic characteristics. Tt was our hypothesis that prolonged liver damage bychemicat carcinogens may be more effective in induction of tLlmors, when compared with single injec-tion. Ovr previous study showed fts potential effects. In the present study we tried to induce liver to-mors and pulmonary Ineta.stases with lower concentration of BEN with the same regiraen. At 23 weekslater the turner incidences from group 1(38mg/rat),2(19mg/rat),3(50mg/kg, ip,3/3weelts) were 25% (5/20), 10% (2/20) and 35% f 7/20), respectively. The comprising tumors were hepatocellular adenomas andhepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). No biliarf epithelial cell turners and pulmonary metastases were ob-se.ved.'ffe cause of relatively towered incidences comparing with those of our previous studf seemedthat the-deses used in this study(38mg, 19mg) were not enough to give a protonged cell and/or tissuedafnages. We have deruonstrated the expressions of inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)and 3-nitrotyrosiBe, a marlter of peroxynitrite formation, by immunohistochemistry in liver tumor tis-sues of our previous stud:#. iNOS was located mainly in oval ·eells, capillary endothelial and muscularcells, epithelia of cholangiomas and glandular HCCs. 3-Nitrotyrosine was observed in the cytoplasms ofsome living or apoptotic EICC cells, connective tissues, proteinEceous fluids, sinusoidal endothelia of to-morous hepatocytes and cholangiomas in tumors. From these observations, we suggest that 1) chronictissue damage by chemics.1 carcinogens may act to induce iNOS and peroxynitrite formation, 2) ovalcells play a key role in development and/or growth of turner tissues by secreting NO via iNOS, whichmay also cause tissue damage by peroxynitrite, and 3) iNOS can be considered as a phenotypic markerin cells of ovat cell lineage and neovascularized capillaries in tumor tissues.

        Exploring preventive factors against insufficient antibody positivity rate for Foot-and-Mouth Disease in pig farms in South Korea: a preliminary ecological study

        Background: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease in livestock that has tremendous economic impact nationally. After multiple FMD outbreaks, the South Korean government implemented a vaccination policy for efficient disease control. However, during active surveillance by quarantine authorities, pig farms have reported an insufficient antibody positivity rate to FMD. Objective: In this study, the spatial and temporal trends of insufficiency among pig farms were analyzed, and the effect of the number of government veterinary officers was explored as a potential preventive factor. Methods: Various data were acquired, including national-level surveillance data for antibody insufficiency from the Korea Animal Health Integrated System, the number of veterinary officers, and the number of local pig farms. Temporal and geographical descriptive analyses were conducted to overview spatial and temporal trends. Additionally, logistic regression models were employed to investigate the association between the number of officers per pig farm with antibody insufficiency. Spatial cluster analysis was conducted to detect spatial clusters. Results: The results showed that the incidence of insufficiency tended to decrease in recent years (odds ratio [OR], 0.803; 95% confidence interval [95% CIs], 0.721–0.893), and regions with a higher density of governmental veterinary officers (OR, 0.942; 95% CIs, 0.918–0.965) were associated with a lower incidence. Conclusions: This study implies that previously conducted national interventions would be effective, and the quality of government-provided veterinary care could play an important role in addressing the insufficient positivity rate of antibodies.

      • Suppression of chemically-induced liver tumors by castration or estradiol-3-benzoate treatment in F344 rats.

        <P>Epidemiological data reveal that the incidence of liver cancer is markedly higher in men than women. To clarify the mechanism responsible for the induction of higher incidence of liver tumors in male animals, we investigated the modifying effect of sex hormones in diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced rat hepatocarcinogenesis. F344 male rats (n=120) were divided into two experiments, experiment I (Exp I) and experiment II (Exp II). In each experiment, 60 rats were randomly allocated into four groups. The mini-osmotic pumps containing doses of 47.5 mg (Exp I) or 23.75 mg (Exp II) of DEN were inserted into the abdominal cavity of each animal to initiate liver carcinogenesis. Animals in group 2 were castrated one week prior to DEN treatment, and animals in groups 3 and 4 were treated with 1 or 10 microg of estradiol-3-benzoate (EB), respectively, one week prior to DEN treatment. Animals in group 1 were treated with DEN alone and sham-operated at the same time. All animals were sacrificed 26 weeks after DEN treatment. In Exp I, liver tumor incidence of group 3 decreased significantly compared with that of group 1 (p<0.05), and tumor multiplicities of groups 2, 3 and 4 were decreased significantly compared to that of group 1 (p<0.01). In Exp II, tumor incidence of group 3 was significantly different (p<0.05) when compared to that of group 1. Immunohistochemical expression of ERalpha was shown in normal appearing cells, but not in tumor cells. Western blot analysis confirmed that ERalpha expression was higher in normal liver tissue compared to tumor tissues. Taken together, we conclude that castration or EB treatment has an inhibitory effect in DEN-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in F344 rats. The reason for ERalpha loss in tumor cells should be further elucidated.</P>

        Decreased Diethylnitrosamine-induced Liver Preneoplastic Lesions by Estradiol-3-benzoate Treatment

        To clarify whether inhibitory effect of estrogen on liver tumor is associated with cell proliferation, we investigated its role in diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced rat preneoplastic lesions, with time sequenced manners. F344 male rats (n = 90) were divided into three groups at 5 weeks of age. The mini-osmotic pumps providing a continuous infusion of DEN was implanted into the abdominal cavity of each animal in group 1, 2 and 3 at 6 weeks of age. To see the effect of estrogen, pellet containing 1 or 10μg of estradiol-3-benzoate (EB) was implanted subcutaneously in the animals of groups 2 or 3, respectively, one week prior to DEN treatment. Ten animals of each group were euthanized at 10, 14 and 18 weeks after DEN treatment. Liver tissues at each time point were fixed in 10% phosphate-buffered formalin and were processed and embedded in paraffin and 5μm sections mounted on a silanized slide. Glutathione S-transferase placental form (GST-P) positive foci and 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling cells were detected at each time point. Area of GST-P positive foci in DEN+EB 1 or 10μg group was significantly decreased compared to DEN alone at 14 weeks (p < 0.01 or p < 0.05, respectively) an at 18 weeks (p< 0.05 or p< 0.01, respectively). BrdU index in DEN+EB 1 or 10μg groups was significantly decreased compared to DEN alone at 14 weeks and at 18 weeks (p < 0.01). Taken together, we conclude that EB treatment decrease the DEN-induced liver preneoplastic lesions and this may be associated with decrease of cellular proliferation.
