Effects of a Critical Thinking College English Writing Class
Bryan Aguiar,Myeong-Hee Seong 한국영어어문교육학회 2014 영어어문교육 Vol.20 No.3
English writing instructions in the Korean EFL context rarely perform research with a focus on critical thinking. This paper investigates the effects of a critical thinking college writing class on the writing of a class of 15 beginning writers with an intermediate level of English. A translation test consisting of 15 questions, as well as a free writing self-introduction assignment were conducted as a pre-test and a post-test at the beginning and end of the semester, respectively. The accuracy of the translation text was examined, as well as the fluency, complexity and accuracy of the free writing were analyzed qualitatively. Though the grammar didn’t improve much compared with a class with a Korean instructor, according to the analysis of accuracy, fluency and complexity of the free writing, the students exhibited increased confidence, creativity and a greater focus on abstract topics in the content and self-expression of their free writing.

This paper aims to investigate university students` perceptions of drama activities in terms of providing suggestions for constructing an effective drama class. A total of ten students who participated in Interactive English, an elective English course during the second semester of 2013 at a Korean university, took part in this study. The students` perceptions of the activities as written in their journals and in response to questionnaires were analyzed. The results show that the subjects perceived that (1) all the 10 activities used in the drama course improved their communication skills (2) all the 10 activities improved their confidence; (3) activities that involved Group Homework, Mantle Expert, Role Play and Nursery Rhymes enhanced students` cultural awareness of the target language; (4) awareness, competence, and thinking ability were considered effective results of a drama class. Regarding these results, it is suggested that an activity based drama course gave students the speaking opportunity to increase their confidence, the practice necessary to become self-aware, and through stories, myths and nursery rhymes, a taste of other cultures.

The purpose of this research was to explore the perception of Gangnam Style and Korean Wave in US newspapers. A total of 119 articles from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal issued from April 16, 2010 to December 19, 2013 were analyzed for theme, section, attitude, depth of coverage, and size. The results are as follows: entertainment was the theme with the highest frequency, most were classified as general news, the overall attitude was neutral or positive, and most lacked an overall depth of coverage. Implications show that an original and diverse approach to content that understands the multicultural makeup of American society is subtle enough to develop Korean Wave in the US and improve the image of Korea as a tourist destination.
