We examined the temperature-dependent development, adult longevity, fertility, and sex ratio of the whitefly Aleurocanthus camelliae, which infests tea plants, under laboratory conditions. Eggs and nymphs were reared on tea shoots at 20, 22.5, 25, and 27.5 °C with a photoperiod of 15L:9D. The developmental zero of the egg, total nymphal stadia, and egg–adult duration of A. camelliae were 12.6, 11.6, and 11.9 °C, respectively, with thermal constants of 176.7, 394.7, and 569.9 d-degrees, respectively. The mean longevities of adult female and male A. camelliae were 4.4 and 2.7 d, respectively. These results suggested A. camelliae voltinism of two to three generations per year in Kanto, Tokai, and Kinki districts and three to five generations per year in the Shikoku and Kyushu districts, Japan.
Effect of Oral γ-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Administration on Sleep and its Absorption in Humans

The effects of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on sleep and its levels in blood after oral administration were investigated in humans. A randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled crossoverdesigned study was conducted to evaluate the effect of GABA on sleep. Sleep was evaluated by electroencephalography (EEG) after oral GABA administration. GABA significantly shortened sleep latency and increased the total non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep time. Questionnaires showed that subjects receiving GABA realized its effects on sleep. In addition, the blood level of GABA after administration was investigated, and the absorption and metabolism rates of GABA were determined. GABA was quickly absorbed, and the blood level of GABA was the highest 30 min after oral administration, with a subsequent decrease in concentration. As GABA strongly affected the early stage of sleep, the effect of GABA on sleep may be connected to its levels in blood.
I/Q Imbalance Compensation in the Presence of Time-Varying Channel
Atsushi Minoda,Masashi Nakamura,Hai Lin,Katsumi Yamashita 한국멀티미디어학회 2009 한국멀티미디어학회 국제학술대회 Vol.2009 No.-
I/Q signal processing commonly faces the I/Q imbalance problem, which severely degrade the performance particularly in direct-conversion architecture receiver. In this paper, we propose a method for compensating I/Q imbalances using training sequence in time-varying channel. Finally, we estimate the parameters for I/Q imbalance compensation by maximum likelihood estimation (MLE).
Vol.22 No.11
This paper proposes a novel indoor positioning system (IPS) that uses a calibrated camera sensor network and dense 3D map information. The proposed IPS information is obtained by generating a bird's-eye image from multiple camera images; thus, our proposed IPS can provide accurate position information when objects (e.g., the mobile robot or pedestrians) are detected from multiple camera views. We evaluate the proposed IPS in a real environment with moving objects in a wireless camera sensor network. The results demonstrate that the proposed IPS can provide accurate position information for moving objects. This can improve the localization performance for mobile robot operation.
A High-Resolution Structure of the Pre-microRNA Nuclear Export Machinery
Okada, Chimari,Yamashita, Eiki,Lee, Soo Jae,Shibata, Satoshi,Katahira, Jun,Nakagawa, Atsushi,Yoneda, Yoshihiro,Tsukihara, Tomitake American Association for the Advancement of Scienc 2009 Science Vol.326 No.5957

Nuclear export of microRNAs (miRNAs) by exportin-5 (Exp-5) is an essential step in miRNA biogenesis. Here, we present the 2.9 angstrom structure of the pre-miRNA nuclear export machinery formed by pre-miRNA complexed with Exp-5 and a guanine triphosphate (GTP)-bound form of the small nuclear guanine triphosphatase (GTPase) Ran (RanGTP). The x-ray structure shows that Exp-5:RanGTP recognizes the 2-nucleotide 3′ overhang structure and the double-stranded stem of the pre-miRNA. Exp-5:RanGTP shields the pre-miRNA stem from degradation in a baseball mitt-like structure where it is held by broadly distributed weak interactions, whereas a tunnel-like structure of Exp-5 interacts strongly with the 2-nucleotide 3′ overhang through hydrogen bonds and ionic interactions. RNA recognition by Exp-5:RanGTP does not depend on RNA sequence, implying that Exp-5:RanGTP can recognize a variety of pre-miRNAs.
