Understanding the birth and evolution of galaxies, and the history of star formation in them, is one of the most important problems in astronomy. Using the data from the AKARI IRC survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud at 3.2, 7, 11, 15, and $24{\mu}m$, we have constructed a multi-wavelength catalog containing data from the cross-correlation with a number of other databases at different wavelengths. We present the first approach with a Support Vector Machine (SVM)-based method to separate different classes of stars in LMC in the color-color and color-magnitude diagrams.

<P><B>Aims/hypothesis</B></P><P><I>FTO</I> harbours the strongest known obesity-susceptibility locus in Europeans. While there is growing evidence for a role for <I>FTO</I> in obesity risk in Asians, its association with type 2 diabetes, independently of BMI, remains inconsistent. To test whether there is an association of the <I>FTO</I> locus with obesity and type 2 diabetes, we conducted a meta-analysis of 32 populations including 96,551 East and South Asians.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>All studies published on the association between <I>FTO</I>-rs9939609 (or proxy [<I>r</I><SUP>2</SUP> > 0.98]) and BMI, obesity or type 2 diabetes in East or South Asians were invited. Each study group analysed their data according to a standardised analysis plan. Association with type 2 diabetes was also adjusted for BMI. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to pool all effect sizes.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The <I>FTO</I>-rs9939609 minor allele increased risk of obesity by 1.25-fold/allele (<I>p</I> = 9.0 × 10<SUP>−19</SUP>), overweight by 1.13-fold/allele (<I>p</I> = 1.0 × 10<SUP>−11</SUP>) and type 2 diabetes by 1.15-fold/allele (<I>p</I> = 5.5 × 10<SUP>−8</SUP>). The association with type 2 diabetes was attenuated after adjustment for BMI (OR 1.10-fold/allele, <I>p</I> = 6.6 × 10<SUP>−5</SUP>). The <I>FTO</I>-rs9939609 minor allele increased BMI by 0.26 kg/m<SUP>2</SUP> per allele (<I>p</I> = 2.8 × 10<SUP>−17</SUP>), WHR by 0.003/allele (<I>p</I> = 1.2 × 10<SUP>−6</SUP>), and body fat percentage by 0.31%/allele (<I>p</I> = 0.0005). Associations were similar using dominant models. While the minor allele is less common in East Asians (12–20%) than South Asians (30–33%), the effect of <I>FTO</I> variation on obesity-related traits and type 2 diabetes was similar in the two populations.</P><P><B>Conclusions/interpretation</B></P><P><I>FTO</I> is associated with increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, with effect sizes similar in East and South Asians and similar to those observed in Europeans. Negative magnetoresistance in sputtered niobium thin films grown on silicon substrates

Nb-films (thicknesses of 20 nm, 50 nm and 100 nm), directly grown on orientated Si substrates by DC sputtering, have shown reduced superconducting critical temperatures TC as compared to the bulk value; an effect associated with their disordered granular character (the disorder phenomenon of the Nb-films depresses the density of states at the Fermi level, consequently shifts the TC value towards low temperatures). The disorder effect was also correlated to the semiconducting-like behavior observed in the RðTÞ measurements. At the normal state, while the 100 nm Nb-film is dominated by a metallic-like behavior, the thinner Nb-films (20 nm and 50 nm thick) show significant negative magnetoresistances in a small temperature range about TC. This behavior was also explained assuming their granular characters, where the applied magnetic field first destroys the global superconducting character of the Nb-films, leaving Cooper pairs localized inside Nb-grains. A further increase of the applied field strength affects the superconductivity inside Nb-grains, enhancing the normal intergranular electric transport channel, which decreases the whole resistance of the Nb-films. The present study suggests that the microscopic disorder, at the grain surfaces/interfaces, seems to be an essential point to comprehend the negative magnetoresistance effect observed in some superconducting granular systems.
OVERVIEW OF NORTH ECLIPTIC POLE DEEP MULTI-WAVELENGTH SURVEY (NEP-DEEP)

The recent updates of the North Ecliptic Pole deep (0.5~deg$^2$, NEP-Deep)multi-wavelength survey covering from X-ray to radio-wave is presented. The NEP-Deep provides us with several thousands of 15~$\mu$m or 18~$\mu$mselected galaxies, which is the largest sample ever made at thesewavelengths. A continuous filter coverage in the mid-infrared wavelength(7, 9, 11, 15, 18, and 24~$\mu$m) is unique and vital to diagnose thecontributions from starbursts and AGNs in the galaxies out to $z$=2. The new goal of the project is to resolve the nature of the cosmic star formationhistory at the violent epoch (e.g. $z$=1--2), and to find a clue to understandits decline from $z$=1 to presentuniverse by utilizing the unique power of the multiwavelength survey. The progressin this context is briefly mentioned.
Magnetic Properties of Fe-doped NiO Nanoparticles

Ni1−xFexO (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1) nanoparticles with several nanometers encapsulated with amorphousSiO2 were prepared by our novel preparation method. A NiO single phase structure was confirmedusing the X-ray diffraction measurements. It is considered that Ni ions are replaced by Fe ionsbecause it is observed that the lattice constant decreases. The temperature dependence behaviorof the magnetization revealed that the blocking temperature, TB, shifted from 17 to 57 K as theamount of Fe ions increased, and that below TB, ferromagnetic behaviors were exhibited. Thecoercive force, HC, increased from 0.8 to 1.5 kOe as the amount of Fe ions increased.

An overview of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) deep multi-wavelength survey covering from X-ray to radio wavelengths is presented. The main science objective of this multi-wavelength project is to unveil the star-formation and AGN activities obscured by dust in the violent epoch of the Universe (z=0.5-2), when the star formation and black-hole evolution activities were much stronger than the present. The NEP deep survey with AKARI/IRC consists of two survey projects: shallow wide (8.2 sq. deg, NEP-Wide) and the deep one (0.6 sq. deg, NEP-Deep). The NEP-Deep provides us with a $15{\mu}m$ or $18{\mu}m$ selected sample of several thousands of galaxies, the largest sample ever made at these wavelengths. A continuous filter coverage at mid-IR wavelengths (7, 9, 11, 15, 18, and $24{\mu}m$) is unique and vital to diagnose the contribution from starbursts and AGNs in the galaxies at the violent epoch. The recent updates of the ancillary data are also provided: optical/near-IR magnitudes (Subaru, CFHT), X-ray (Chandra), FUV/NUV (GALEX), radio (WSRT, GMRT), optical spectra (Keck/DEIMOS etc.), Subaru/FMOS, Herschel/SPIRE, and JCMT/SCUBA-2.
