      • Structure and activity of TiO2/FeO co-doped carbon spheres for adsorptive-photocatalytic performance of complete toluene removal from aquatic environment

        Sharma, A.,Lee, B.K. Elsevier 2016 Applied Catalysis A Vol.523 No.-

<P>TiO2 and TiO2-FeO co-doped carbon spheres (CB) synthesized with a suspension polymerization process, followed by carbonization and activation, were used to promote the sorption and photocatalytic removal of toluene from aqueous media. The TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and Fe doped TiO2 NPs were incorporated during the middle stage of the suspension polymerization reaction. A porous surface texture on the doped CB was developed by a carbonization and activation process at 800 degrees C under N-2 and CO2 atmospheres, respectively. The doped TiO2-FeO NPs acted as visible-light sensitizers for photo-degradation of toluene under visible light irradiation. The maximum removal capacity of toluene (5-100 mg/L of aqueous solution) was found to be 48.3, 78.1 and 103.1 mg/g, for the TiO2, CB-TiO2 and CB-TiO2-FeO, respectively. The great adsorptive-photo-catalytic process for complete removal of toluene with CB-TiO2-FeO was 98.2%. However, reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was achieved 84.2 and 94.6% respectively, after 3.5 h under visible light irradiation at an initial pH of 3.5. The catalytic removal of toluene followed a pseudo-first-order reaction. The toluene removal in the dark phase indicated that nonpolar toluene molecules are initially sorbed onto the porous structure of CB-TiO2-FeO via electrostatic bonding between nonpolar molecule moieties with phenolic surface of CB-TiO2-FeO. The greatly enhanced photocatalytic performance of CB-TiO2-FeO mainly stemmed from their strong visible-light-harvesting ability of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Anti-Allergic Effects of Herbal Product from Allium cepa (Bulb)

        Kaiser, P.,Youssouf, M.S.,Tasduq, S.A.,Singh, S.,Sharma, S.C.,Singh, G.D.,Gupta, V.K.,Gupta, B.D.,Johri, R.K. The Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.2

Allium cepa (Family Liliaceae) is a reputed Indian medicinal herb that is prescribed as an effective remedy for several ailments in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate its efficacy against various events responsible for Type I allergic reactions. A herbal fraction (ALC-02) from A. cepa (bulb) inhibited histamine release and attenuated intracellular calcium levels in Compound 48/80-induced rat peritoneal mast cells. It also prevented Compound 48/80-mediated systemic anaphylaxis while lowering histamine levels in plasma. ALC-02 suppressed carrageenan-induced rat paw edema. It inhibited eosinophil peroxidase activity and protein content in broncho alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of ovalbumin-challenged mice. In this experiment ALC-02 also caused a substantial reduction in lipid peroxidation in BALF/lung tissue and augmented superoxide dismutase activity in lung tissue. ALC-02 suppressed erythrocytic lysis caused by Triton X-100. A significant quenching of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical by ALC-02 was observed. The results have shown a promising anti-allergic profile of ALC-02 that could be attributed to its potential antihistaminic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities.

Characterization of MHC DRB3.2 Alleles of Crossbred Cattle by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism

        Paswan, Chandan,Bhushan, Bharat,Patra, B.N.,Kumar, Pushpendra,Sharma, Arjava,Dandapat, S.,Tomar, A.K.S.,Dutt, Triveni Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2005 Animal Bioscience Vol.18 No.9

The present investigation was undertaken to study the genetic polymorphism of the DRB3 exon 2 in 75 crossbred cattle by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. Five genotypes i.e. HaeIII-a, HaeIII-b, HaeIII-e, HaeIII-ab and HaeIII-ae were observed when the 284 bp PCR products were digested with HaeIII restriction enzyme. The corresponding frequencies of these patterns were 0.53, 0.04, 0.01, 0.38 and 0.04, respectively. Digestion with RsaI restriction enzyme resolved 24 different restriction patterns. The frequencies of these patterns ranged from 0.013 (RsaI-f, RsaI-k and RsaI-c/n) to 0.120 (RsaI-n). The results revealed that the crossbred cows belonged to the RsaI patterns namely b, k, l, a/l, d/s, l/n, l/o and m/n, whose corresponding frequencies were 0.027, 0.013, 0.040, 0.027, 0.040, 0.067, 0.027 and 0.067, respectively. Digestion of the 284 bp PCR product of DRB3.2 gene with PstI in the crossbred cattle did not reveal any restriction site. These results suggested the absence of the recognition site in some of the animals. These results also revealed that the crossbred cows studied were in homozygous as well as heterozygous condition. On the basis of the above results it can be concluded that the DRB3.2 gene was found to be highly polymorphic in the crossbred cattle population.

Design and Modeling of a Capacitor Bank Power Supply for Fast Charging

        Surender Kumar Sharma,Pankaj Deb,R. Shukla,P. Banerjee,T. Prabaharan,R. Das,B. Das,B. Adhikary,A. Shyam 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.61

Power supplies used in pulsed power applications are rugged, and the capacitor bank charges rapidly. The capacitor bank is fully charged to the rated voltage in a minimum time so as to reduce the dielectric stress on the capacitors and to increase their life. When the capacitor bank is discharged in the load much Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) due to high currents discharges is generated, which can damage the electronic circuitry in the power supply if proper shielding & isolation are not provided to it. We have designed and fabricated a compact, rugged and low-cost high voltage (HV) power supply for a 114-kJ, 40-kV capacitor bank. The power supply consists of a high voltage transformer (5.25 kVA, 230 V/35 kV, 50 Hz), a high voltage diode (Semikron Make PIV 110 kV, 150 mA) and a charging resistor placed in a tank filled with oil. The charging resistors value is selected after a PSPICE simulation of the charging circuit for different values of the charging resistor. The charging current is limited with the selected resistor so that it does not exceed the current limit of the HV transformer & diode. The input voltage to the high voltage transformer is given through autotransformer, which rotates from 0 ?230 volts in 40 sec with a single-phase synchronous motor. The capacitor bank is charged to 40 kV in a minute after that, the power supply is decoupled from the capacitor bank by using a pneumatic decoupling switch, then the capacitor bank's switch is triggered to deliver the capacitor bank's energy to the load. Control and protection in the power supply is provided for its safe operation. The monitoring of charging voltage is done with a digital display meter with fiber optic isolation by using a V-F and then F-V converter in order to provide electrical isolation.

Comprehensive analysis of plant rapid alkalization factor (RALF) genes

        Sharma, A.,Hussain, A.,Mun, B.G.,Imran, Q.M.,Falak, N.,Lee, S.U.,Kim, J.Y.,Hong, J.K.,Loake, G.J.,Ali, A.,Yun, B.W. Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam. 2016 Plant Physiology and Biochemistry Vol. No.

<P>Receptor mediated signal carriers play a critical role in the regulation of plant defense and development. Rapid alkalization factor (RALF) proteins potentially comprise important signaling components which may have a key role in plant biology. The RALF gene family contains large number of genes in several plant species, however, only a few RALF genes have been characterized to date. In this study, an extensive database search identified 39, 43, 34 and 18 RALF genes in Arabidopsis, rice, maize and soybean, respectively. These RALF genes were found to be highly conserved across the 4 plant species. A comprehensive analysis including the chromosomal location, gene structure, subcellular location, conserved motifs, protein structure, protein-ligand interaction and promoter analysis was performed. RALF genes from four plant species were divided into 7 groups based on phylogenetic analysis. In silico expression analysis of these genes, using microarray and EST data, revealed that these genes exhibit a variety of expression patterns. Furthermore, RALF genes showed distinct expression patterns of transcript accumulation in vivo following nitrosative and oxidative stresses in Arabidopsis. Predicted interaction between RALF and heme ligand also showed that RALF proteins may contribute towards transporting or scavenging oxygen moieties. This suggests a possible role for RALF genes during changes in cellular redox status. Collectively, our data provides a valuable resource to prime future research in the role of RALF genes in plant growth and development. (C) 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.</P>

Effect of Naked Neck Gene on Immune Competence, Serum Biochemical and Carcass Traits in Chickens under a Tropical Climate

        Rajkumar, U.,Reddy, B.L.N.,Rajaravindra, K.S.,Niranjan, M.,Bhattacharya, T.K.,Chatterjee, R.N.,Panda, A.K.,Reddy, M.R.,Sharma, R.P. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.7

A comprehensive study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of naked neck (Na) gene on immune competence, serum biochemical parameters and carcass quality traits in three genotypes (NaNa, Nana and nana) of the naked neck chicken under a tropical climate (Southern India). Sixty day-old chicks (20 from each genotype) were selected randomly and reared under similar environmental conditions up to eight weeks of age. The cell mediated immune (CMI) response to phytohaemoagglutinin-P (PHA-P) was significantly higher ($p{\lgq}0.01$) in NaNa and Nana genotypes compared to nana birds. The humoral response as measured by antibody titre to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) was also significantly higher in NaNa. The total cholesterol, LDL and VLDL cholesterol levels were significantly ($p{\leq}0.01$) lower whereas HDL cholesterol level was significantly higher in NaNa and Nana compared to nana genotype. The presence of Na allele significantly increased the live weight and dressing yield, and decreased the feather cover and abdominal fat. The naked neck genotypes (NaNa/Nana) performed better than the normal (nana) siblings for almost all the traits studied.
