This study investigates whether sensitivity to nonadjacent and adjacent dependency rules in an artificial grammar learning paradigm (i.e., statistical learning ability) predicts L2 learners’ performance in comprehending two different types of English structures. A total of 110 L1-Korean participants completed the four tasks: two artificial grammar learning tasks, involving nonadjacent and adjacent dependency rules, and two self-paced English reading tasks, involving English relative clauses and adjacent number agreement in noun phrases. The results show that their statistical learning scores predicted the L2 learners’ performance only in processing object relative clauses: the ability to discover the nonadjacent pattern in artificial grammar learning is correlated with comprehension accuracy on object relative clauses, but not on adjacent number agreement. The findings of this study indicate that the statistical learning ability to discover a particular pattern (a nonadjacent dependency) can be considered a predictor in comprehending long-distance dependency patterns in the L2. These also illuminate the role of implicit learning processes of language learning, which will have pedagogical implications for second language instruction as well.
21세기 무용용어의 개념에 관한 일고찰 -커뮤니티 댄스를 중심으로

In the dance industry today, numerous activities are held under the name of community dance, and this trend is on the rise. However, the term “Community Dance” has yet to be properly defined. The situation is no different overseas, and while the meaning of community dance has not been clearly delineated, a variety of such dance activities are currently taking place. This study was launched to explore the difference between the meaning of the term and its present today. In such a context, this paper focuses on the present of community dance and explores its potential while also looking into its origin and meaning. Our aim in this paper is to examine the background and meaning of community dance in a new way: its social framework and art since the Revolution de Mai. Further, we demonstrate how the meaning of community dance changed during the 20th century and examine its significance today.
노인의 인생초기 애착경험과 현재 배우자와 친밀한 관계경험의 관련성

본 연구는 노인의 애착을 측정하여 애착이 내적 작동모델을 통하여 개인의 전생애적 발달에 영향을 미치는 지를 알아보기 위하여 노인의 삶에 영향을 미치고 있는 배우자와의 친밀한 관계에 대한 인식과 인생초기 애착분리 경험 간의 상관성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 조사연구 대상은 부산시내에 거주하는 65세이상 노인복지관을 이용하는 233명으로 구조화된 설문지를 이용하여 연구자가 직접조사를 실시하였으며 자료처리는 t검증과 다변량분산분석 방법 등을 사용하였다. 연구 결과 노인들은 다수가 안정 애착의 유형을 보이고 있으며 현재의 노인들이 아동기 이전에 안전한 애착과정을 경험하였다는 것을 나타내고 있다. 또한 성인 애착 이론에서 어린시기에 부모와의 애착 형성과정이 노년기까지 영향을 미치고 있다는 사실을 연구결과는 확인시켜주고 있다. 이는 인생초기 어린 시절에 형성된 애착이 전 생애에 걸쳐 지속되는 것으로 노년기의 삶에도 영향을 줄 수 있는 중요한 변인이라는 것을 확인하였음을 의미한다. 나아가 노인들의 부부나 배우자등과 생활에서 친밀감은 아동기 이전의 애착형성과정 중에서 부모와 떨어진 경험이 매우 중요하다는 것을 확인시켜주고 있다. 어느 시기에 얼마만큼 떨어져 있었느냐 하는 것은 그다지 중요하지 않으며 인생초기에 부모와 떨어진 경험을 함으로서 불안과 회피성향을 발달시키게 되고 그것은 노후에도 영향을 미치게 된다. This study looks into the relationship between the perception of the close relationship that impacts the lives of the aged and the experience of attachment separation in the childhood to see if the attachment affects the development of an individual"s whole life, through internal operation model by measuring the attachment of the elder. First of all, most of the aged people in Korea seemed to have an attachment security, which implies that they have had experience of attachment security before their childhoods. Importantly, in the adult attachment theory, the process of the formation of childhood attachment with their parents keeps going on through their whole lives and affects them into their old age. It is confirmed that the attachment molded in childhood is continued through one"s whole life and could be one of the important variables that could influence the later life. Additionally, the intimacy feelings from living with one"s partner or spouse among the elderly tell us that the experience of separation in the process of the formation of the attachment with his or her parents in ones pre-childhood is very important. What matters is not when or how long the separation had been, but that experiencing separation from ones parents develops anxiety or avoidance tendencies in one"s relationships and affects through old age.
Notetaking Strategy Use in EFL Learners` Listening Comprehension and Integrated Speaking Performance

This study investigates the frequency of notetaking strategy use by EFL learners and further examines the relationships between notetaking strategy use, listening comprehension, and integrated speaking performance. EFL learners participated in a quasi-experimental study over one semester. All participants received instruction and practice in five categories of notetaking strategies. They completed pre- and post-tests that included listening comprehension and integrated speaking tasks. The results showed that notetaking strategies in the reviewing category were the most frequently used. The use of notetaking strategies in the general category was moderately related with improvement in listening, but no relationship was found between notetaking strategy use and the improvement of integrated speaking performance.
Suprasegmental Instruction and the Improvement of EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension

Despite increasing attention to the goal of successful communication in foreign language instruction, L2 pronunciation, particularly the production of suprasegmental information, has been neglected in instructional settings at the college level. Yet accurate suprasegmental production is essential to the development of intelligible L2 speech. And while there is a scholarly consensus that accurate suprasegmental production of English is closely related with accurate perception of English (i.e., listening), little is known about the relationship between suprasegmental production and the development of EFL learners’ listening skills. This study, therefore, investigates the relationship between suprasegmental production instruction and improvement in Korean EFL learners’ listening comprehension scores, and, further, examines the relationship between accurate production of suprasegmentals and learners’ production of comprehensible L2 speech. Thirty-two EFL learners participated in a quasi-experimental study in which they received training in English suprasegmental features over one month. They also completed listening comprehension pre and post tests, a suprasegmental production test, and a timed picture description task. The results showed significant relations between accurate suprasegmental production and improvement in listening comprehension, and also accurate suprasegmental production is a good predictor of speaking performance. The main pedagogical implication of these findings is that it is important to emphasize suprasegmental in listening and speaking classes.
