A connection sign '~' is prescribed as swung dash in the current rules of Korean language symbol. It is used as a meaning of 'from ~ to' in the example of 'September 15 ~ September 25'. It is also used for repetition of a word or phrase. For example, when a phrase 'New Village' is used repeatedly, '~ movement' and '~ song' mean 'New Village movement' and 'New Village song' respectively. Nowadays, however, swung dash is used wrongly in everyday language regardless of writing forms. It is easily founded in not only individual writings but also written advertisements or information guides such as television subtitles, placards onstreets, bulletin boards etc. In order to suggest developmental possibility of swung dash which performs dynamic and productive function, I investigated the actual conditions of swung dash in communication language and everyday language and researched from the linguistic point of view. I chose the language on internet bulletin boards and home pages as an example of communication language. For the language oninternet bulletin boards, I collected material from Center for Teaching and Learning in Daejeon (tenet.or.kr), an affiliate of the Daejeon Metropolitan Officeof Education and Naver, one of the portal sites (naver.com). For the language onhomepages, I collected material from homepages of portal sites Daum (daum.net) and Naver (naver.com), and homepages ofthe broadcasting companies which speak for mass culture and the press such as KBS (kbs.co.kr), MBC (imbc.com), and SBS (sbs.co.kr),and homepages of Newspaper companies, Donga Ilbo (donga.com) and HanKyoReh Newspaper (hani.co.kr). As an example of everyday language, I examined advertising description of various kinds of industrial products in which swung dash is used. I searched published books to investigate the situation of the academic world and the publishing business which use correct spells according to the rules of Korean spelling and right symbols. As a result, swung dash is used actively in various writing forms, presenting new meaning and performing diverse functions. First, swung dash functions as a sign of a prolonged sound phonologically. Second, swung dash strengthens a nasal sound. Third, swung dash emphasizes messages of communication. Fourth, swung dash is a semantic tool to present speaker's familiarity and a positive attitude. The users in communication or everyday life recognize a letter as visual presentation of sound. They use many ways to deliver illocutionary power effectively in conversation conditions such as greeting, request, asking, promise, celebration, comfort, regret, surprise, admiration, calling, gladness, boast, emphasis, question, time-delay, ellipsis, aftertaste and familiarity. Though swung dash is a deviated form from the rule, it shows consistent meaning in a sentence. It is because swung dash has functions to indicate a prolonged sound, strengthen a nasal sound, and emphasize messages of communication. Swung dash used only in the imagination world is not just an emoticon but is a sign performing pragmatic function. I predict swung dash could be as a sign to be suitable for new meaning and function in the current Korean language situation in which misuse of symbols is serious.

Gastric multiple carcinoids with bleeding is very rare disease. A 62-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital because of hematemesis and melena. On the gastrofiberoptic examination, blood clots, multiple small round polypoid masses in fundus and large round submucosal tumor-like polypoid mass in lesser curvature side of body were noticed. The biopsy specimen of small polypoid mass in gastric fundus by polypectomy snare showed carcinoid tumor in submucosa covered by atrophic mucosa with intestinal metaplasia and positive immunohistochemical stain for chromogranin A, neuron-specific enolase, cytokeratin. So we report a case of gastric multiple carcinoids with a review of relevant literature. (Korean J GastroenteroJ 1996;2S:721 - 726)

Intrabronchial nerilemmoma is very rare disease. Neurilemmoma has been thought to arise from schwann cell, has been reported to occur in almost any anatomic location. The incidence of primary neurogenic tumors of the lung has been estimated to be 0 to 2 percent of all lung tumors. These tumors are predominantly(75%) associated with neurofibromatosis of von Recklinghausen's disease. To our knowledge, no case of benign solitary endobronchial neurilemmoma has been reported in Korea. This paper presents a case of benign solitary endobronchial neurilemmoma with a brief review of the pertinent literature. A 19 year old female visited our medical hospital with the symptoms of chest discomfort and pain. Bronchoscopy and chest CT scan revealed a mass on the left upper 1obar bronchus. Left upper lobectomy was performed successfully and histological section revealed a neurilemmoma.

대장 흑피증 3예

Colonic lesions by irritant laxative abuse are devided into melanosis coli, cathartic colon, soap or chemical colitis. Melanosis coli is the brownish or black discoloration of the colon because of the accumulation of lipofuscin pigment in macrophages located in lamina propria and associated with anthraquinone containing laxative abuse. The site of this lesion is more common in cecum and proximal colon, but whole colon can be involved. This lesion is occurred between 4 months and 13 months from initiation of drug medication, and the lesion is benign because the pigments disappear by withdrawning the laxatives. A number of cases were reported in our country, all of the cases were associated with prolonged administration of anthraquinone type laxatives. We presents two cases of melanosis eoli that had administrated aloe to treat the chronic constipation during long terms, and one case of melanosis coli that had not administrated laxatives or a specific drug with chronic constipation. All of three cases were confirmed by colonoscopy.

신경섬유종에 동반된 양측성 갈색세포종 1예

Pheochromocytoma is originated from chromaffin cell of sympathetic nervous system and associated with other disease, such as neurofibromatosis, duodenal carcinoid, medullary thyroid cancer and parathyroid adenoma. Especially, pheochromocytoma is developed more than 50% in neurofibromatosis associated with hypertension. In such cases, several clinical features documented as more frequent bilateral phochromocytoma, more associated with other neuroendocrine tumors and thus more poor prognosis. We can observe the sustained hypertension despite of surgical resection of tumors in pheochromocytoma cases. One of the possible reason of post operative sustained hypertension is the pheochromocytoma originated from minor organ of Zukerkandl that was not resected during operation. Untreated or delayed treated cases with pheochromocytoma were often expired by complication of hypertension such as cerebrovascular hemorrhage, myocardial infarction, etc. Thus, in neurofibromatosis with hypertension, screening of pheochromocytorna is very important for the early detection of tumor and more favorable prognosis. Recently, We experienced a case of neurofibromatosis associated with bilateral pheochromocy- toma expired by cerebral hemorrhage during operation, so we report the case with literature review. 원발성 십이지장 선암 3예

Primary adenocarcinoma of the duodenum is a rare disease, representing 0.35% of all gastrointestinal neoplasm and 0.042% of all malignant neoplasm. Since Ham-burger described the first duodenal caricinoma in 1746, the incidence has shown an increasing tendency. Compared with upper gastrointestinal contrast studies, the gastroduodenoscopy has gained an increasing popularity as an invesitigative tool in recent years. But the diagnosis is usually made at a very late stage because the symptoms are often non-specific, which contributes to delayed diagonsiss and poorer prognosis. We have experienced two cases of the primary carcinoma of the duodenal bulb and one case of carcinoma of the second portion, which were diagnosed by biopsy with gastrofiberoscopic endoscopy and operative finding. So we report three csses with a brief review of literature.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are an unusual cause of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. But most GI AVM can occur with GI bleeding. When conventional diagnostic studies have failed to reveal the source of GI bleeding, AVM have been one of the most common causes. But the incidence of AVM presented as bleeding of a gastric submucosal tumor is very low. A case of gastric submucosal tumor was experienced and reported as an AVM. This case is herein discussed with review of corresponding literature.
