Electronic nose has been developed for detection of various hazardous molecules, especially vapor organic compounds (VOCs), by adsorption and desorption phenomenon. However, although conventional electronic noses have provided many advantages such as simple detection and high sensitivity, they still need advanced technologies for selective specificity in real samples. In this review, we provide bionanoelectronic noses with natural receptors for selective odorant detection. This review includes from fabrication of natural receptors and conducting nanomaterials to bioelectronic noses. We also discussed their perspective applications for the future at the conclusion.
산사(山査)가 노화유발(老化誘發) 흰쥐의 항산화능(抗酸化能)에 미치는 영향(影響)

Objectives : CRATAEGII FRUCTUS(山査) is known as the substance which delays aging by the antioxidant effects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of CRATAEGII FRUCTUS(山査) on antioxidant enzyme activities such as Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS), Superoxide dismutase(SOD), Catalase(CAT), Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) in rat erythrocytes and blood plasma. Methods : Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups, Normal group (supplied enough water and feeds only, Normal Group), D-galatose administered group(injected D-galatose 50mg/kg, 1time/day for 6 weeks, Control Group) and CRATAEGII FRUCTUS(山査) administered group (D-galactose 50mg/kg and CRATAEGII FRUCTUS(山査) extracts 85.0mg/200g 1time/day for 6 weeks, SS Group). Rats were sacrificed and TBARS, SOD, CAT, GSH-px, neutral fat and cholesterol were measured in rat erythrocytes and blood plasma. Results : There was no significant difference in the level of TBARS in the blood plasma between each experimental group. Red blood cell SOD activities were significantly different in each group. They were significantly decreased in the Control group compared to those of Normal and there was an increasing phenomenon in the SS group compared to the Control group. There was a significant difference in the activities of the red blood cell - glutathione peroxides in each group. There was a significant increase in the SS group compared to the Control group. Red blood cell catalase activities was no significant difference in each group. Plasma total lipid concentration was significantly different in each group. It was significantly increased in the Control group compared with the Normal group and it was decreasing in the SS group compared to the control group. Plasma triglyceride was not significantly different in each group. Plasma total cholesterol and Plasma HDL -cholesterol concentrations in the blood plasma were not significantly different in each group. Conclusions : According to the above results, it is considered that CRATAEGII FRUCTUS(山査) is effective in inhibiting lipid peroxides and increasing the activities of antioxidative(anti aging) enzyme in D-galactose induced aging rat.

Navigation system providing route-guidance and traffic information is one of the most widely used driver-support system these days. Most of the navigation system is based on the 2D map paradigm so the information is ed and encoded from the real world. As a result it imposes a cognitive burden to the driver to interpret and translate the ed information to real world information. As a new concept of navigation system, augmented-reality navigation system (AR navigation) is suggested recently. It provides navigational guidance by imposing graphical information on real image captured by camera mounted on a vehicle in real-time. The ultimate goal of navigation system is to assist the driving task with least driving workload whether it is based on the abstracted graphic paradigm or realistic image paradigm. In this paper, we describe the comparative studies on how map navigation and AR navigation affect for driving tasks by experimental research. From the result of this research we obtained a basic knowledge about the two paradigms of navigation systems. On the basis of this knowledge, we are going to find the optimal design of navigation system supporting driving task most effectively, by analyzing characteristics of driving tasks and navigational information from the human-vehicle interface point of view.

Purpose: The number of patients diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism has been increased owing to the routine biochemical screening of serum calcium since 1970's in the western countries as well as recently in Korea. However, the absolute number of surgically treated patients in Korea is still smaller than other developed countries in the incidence wise, and this could indicate the tendency of relatively late diagnosis and treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism in Korea. This study was performed to investigate the clinical character and post operative results of surgically treated Korean patients. Methods: 80 primary hyperparathyroidism patients surgically treated at Asan Medical Center from Jan 1996 to August 2002 were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The etiological proportion of the primary hyperparathyroidism (single adenoma 80%, hyperplasia or multiple adenoma 10%, MENI 9%, cancer 1%) was similar to the western countries. However, the proportion of the symptomatic patients (82%) to the asymptomatic patients (18%) was much higher compared to the recent data of western countries. 41 patients (single adenoma 36 case, hyperplasia 4 cases, cancer 1case) were followed up more than 3 months after surgery with monitoring the serum calcium and i-PTH. In 23 patients (44%), their i-PTH level was above normal range more than once during follow up period without hypercalcemia. The postoperative serum calcium level was lower and the preoperative i-PTH level was higher in these patients significantly compared to the patients with normal postoperative i-PTH level. The tumor size tended to be larger in these patients but statistically insignificant. These results suggest that these patients had more severe hyperparathyroidism. Conclusion: The proportion of the patients who were symptomatic and has persistent post operative high i-PTH level suggesting severe hyperparathyroidism was relatively high compared to the western countries. Earlier diagnosis and treatment is demanded in Korea. (Korean J Endocrine Surg 2003;3:1-6)

자동차 HUD(Head-Up Display)는 기존 HDD(Head-Down-Display)로 인한 운전자의 시선 분산을 줄이기 위한 장치로, 기술개발뿐만 아니라 관련 상용 제품이 다수 출시되고 있으며 HUD를 장착한 차량도 국내외에서 다수 선보이고 있다. 최근에는 대면적 디스플레이를 통하여 실 세계의 다양한 정보를 운전자의 시야를 중심으로 제공하는 증강현실 기술이 적용된 HUD가 차세대 정보제공 장치로 주목받고 있으며 국내외에서 관련 기술개발이 진행되고 있다. 본고에서는 HUD를 구현하기 위한 주요 방식별 특징을 살펴보고 자동차 적용 동항에 대해 논의 하고자 한다.
