        Objective : The aim of this study was to review systemically clinical trials on the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Methods : Computerized literature searches were carried out on seven electronic databases, and hand-searching on some chinese medical journals in library of Kyung Hee Medical Center. Trial data were extracted in a standardized, predefined manner and assessed independently. Results : 1. Thirty reports of clinical trials and two reports of meta-analyses concerning herbal medicine were collected and reviewed Among these reports three medical herbs were applied as topical medicine and others as internal medicine. 2. The western studies established NSAIDs or placebo as their control group. Five chinese reports established formulated herb pill(Ruanshnagshenjin pill) as their control group and Six did not establish a control group at all. 3. ACR was the most highly used diagnostic criteria in the western studies while the Chinese used their official criteria established by their government or the criteria of their text books. 4. 20 reports chose the Lequesne functional index, SHAQ, WOMAC OA index, AIMS, and their own unique scoring system as the criteria of analysing the effect. Others chose clinical symptoms, articular functions, and lab finding as their criteria. 5. 7 single herbs and 19 formulated herbs were studied. Among the formulated herbs, Achyranthes japonica was studied in 10 of the studies and Angelica gigantis Radix in 8, making them the most often studied herbs among the studies.

      • Transplantation of Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells into the Developing Mouse Eye

        <P>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been studied widely for their potential to differentiate into various lineage cells including neural cells <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. To investigate the influence of the developing host environment on the integration and morphological and molecular differentiation of MSCs, human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) were transplanted into the developing mouse retina. Enhanced green fluorescent protein (GFP)-expressing BM-MSCs were transplanted by intraocular injections into mice, ranging in ages from 1 day postnatal (PN) to 10 days PN. The survival dates ranged from 7 days post-transplantation (DPT) to 28DPT, at which time an immunohistochemical analysis was performed on the eyes. The transplanted BM-MSCs survived and showed morphological differentiation into neural cells and some processes within the host retina. Some transplanted cells expressed microtubule associated protein 2 (MAP2ab, marker for mature neural cells) or glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP, marker for glial cells) at 5PN 7DPT. In addition, some transplanted cells integrated into the developing retina. The morphological and molecular differentiation and integration within the 5PN 7DPT eye was greater than those of other-aged host eye. The present findings suggest that the age of the host environment can strongly influence the differentiation and integration of BM-MSCs.</P>

      • An experimental study on the effect of Omahwan administration in aged human immune system

        To examine effect of omahwan(烏麻丸)-赤何首烏(Polygonum multiflorum THUNB.) 白何首烏(Cynanchum wilfordii H.) 黑芝麻(Sesamum indicum L.)-on the aged human immune system, a series of humoral immunological parameters was compared in aged femal (age 60-70 years) before and after administration of omahwan(烏麻丸). Peripheral blood was obtained from fifteen healthy young (age 20-29, mean=66.3) female volunteers. B cell, T cell(T cells, T helper, and T suppressor/cytotoxic) subsets was examined with specific monoclonal antibodies and isotype controls, using dural color flow cytometer. IL-2 was examined with ELISA kit By comparing the immune characteristics of the yonger and elder groups the total ratio of T-cell, CD8 T-cell and quantity of IL-2 was significantly lower while CD4/CD8 ratio was considerably greater in the elder group. (p<0.05, student t-test) After giving Omahwan fro 30 days to the elder group, by comparing the ratio before and after prescription the total T cell and CD8 T cell ratio was considerably greater after prescription. (p<0.05, paried t-test) The quantity of IL-2 tended to increase after prescription but has no statistical meaning. The results indicate that administration of Omahwan(烏麻丸) differentially affects various aspects of the immune system in aged human.

      • Transplantation of Adipose Derived Stromal Cells into the Developing Mouse Eye

        <P>Adipose derived stromal cells (ADSCs) were transplanted into a developing mouse eye to investigate the influence of a developing host micro environment on integration and differentiation. Green fluorescent protein-expressing ADSCs were transplanted by intraocular injections. The age of the mouse was in the range of 1 to 10 days postnatal (PN). Survival dates ranged from 7 to 28 post transplantation (DPT), at which time immunohistochemistry was performed. The transplanted ADSCs displayed some morphological differentiations in the host eye. Some cells expressed microtubule associated protein 2 (marker for mature neuron), or glial fibrillary acid protein (marker for glial cell). In addition, some cells integrated into the ganglion cell layer. The integration and differentiation of the transplanted ADSCs in the 5 and 10 PN 7 DPT were better than in the host eye the other age ranges. This study was aimed at demonstrating how the age of host micro environment would influence the differentiation and integration of the transplanted ADSCs. However, it was found that the integration and differentiation into the developing retina were very limited when compared with other stem cells, such as murine brain progenitor cell.</P>

        마늘 ( Allium sativum ) 의 프로스타글란딘과 에탄올 추출물이 흰쥐의 혈청 성분에 미치는 영향

        This study was separated and identified prostaglandin from garlic by TLC, HPLC, and Gc-Mass. In this experiment aimed at researching the effects of garlic on body weight, and serum lipid, protein and glucose in male rats. The male rats applied in this work were 42 of Sprague-Dawley strain. In addition to basal diet, the worker administrated 4 groups of the experimental rats solutions which were 0.2 and 0.4ml of raw garlic juice, and of etanol garlic extract with together 2.5% cholesterol solution solved by corn oil for 8 weeks respectively. These results were as follows. 1. Separated and identified of Prostaglandin from garlic. 2. The growth rate of body weight and food efficiency ratio(FER) appeared to be more increased in the experimental groups administrated ethanol garlic extract than raw garlic juice. 3. The content of serum total cholesterol appeared to be decreased in the experimental group administrated 0.4ml of ethanol garlic extract. 4. The level of serum HDL-cholesterol had a tendency to be more increased in all the experimental groups administrated garlic than control group. 5. The level of serum glucose appeared to be decreased in all the experimental groups administrated garlic, particularly ethanol garlic extract.

      • Development of a Piezoresistive MEMS Pressure Sensor for a Precision Air Data Module

        In this paper, the design and fabrication techniques of a differential pressure sensor used in precision air data module (ADM) are described, and its performance test results are presented. A differential pressure senor for an ADM detects the differential pressure between static and total pressure, which can cover differential pressure of 0~20psi range with less than 1% accuracy. In order to satisfy these requirements, the piezoresistive Wheatstone bridge on the silicon diaphragm is used as a strain gauge. The p-type piezoresistors are implanted on the diaphragm under high doping concentration level for achieving smaller temperature sensitivity, and each resistor is designed to have same shape to compensate common errors. A constant current is applied to the bridge, which makes the temperature effects on piezoresistive coefficients and resistors compensate each other. The proposed differential sensor is designed through FEM analysis in order to satisfy nonlinearity requirements for an ADM. The repeatability and nonlinearity of the sensor are less than 0.09% and 0.27%, respectively, and the pressure hysteresis is less than 0.63%, which contributes to the root sum square (RSS) accuracy of 0.69%.

        LTE 표준특허의 정량적 분석

        특허정보는 장기간에 걸쳐 객관적이고 일정한 기준에 근거하여 생성되며, 기술정보, 권리정보, 경영정보의 기능을 가지기 때문에 기업 및 국가의 R&D 능력과 성과, 경영전략 파악을 위한 방법으로 특허분석이 이용되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 전 세계적으로 확산되고 있는 LTE 기술의 구현을 위한 핵심적 지식재산권이자 특허전쟁에서 강력한 무기로 작용하는 표준특허를 분석한다. 이를 위해 2011년 1월 기준으로 유럽전기 통신표준협회(ETSI)의 온라인 데이터베이스에 포함된 LTE 표준특허 중 공개되거나 등록된 특허 총 2,307건을 분석 대상으로 선정하였다. LTE 표준특허 전체를 대상으로 기초통계 분석을 통해 주요 국가별, 특허권자별, 기술분야별 특허 보유 현황을 분석하였으며, 미국출원 특허에 대해서는 특허권자별 기술적 수준, 기술 경쟁력 및 영향력, 시장 확보력을 파악하기 위해 인용도 지수, 특허영향력 지수, 기술력 지수, 시장확보 지수의 4가지 정량적 특허지표를 이용한 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 단순 특허 보유수 상위 5위권에 없거나 하위권에 있던 특허권자가 높은 지수 값을 보이는 등 당초 기초통계 분석의 특허권자 순위와 다소 다르게 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 관련 산업이 차세대 이동통신 시장 주도권 확보를 위한 지식재산 경영 전략을 수립하는데 유용한 정보를 제공할 것으로 기대한다. Patent information, which is generated under a specific, objective rule for a prolonged period of time, has the properties of technology, right, and management. Because of these characteristics of patents, patent analysis is used to identify R&D capacities and performances, and management strategies of a given nation or enterprise. In this paper, we analyze LTE essential patents which are key IPRs for implementing standardized LTE technology and major weapons in a global patent war. Total of 2,307 LTE essential patents, published and registered applications from European Telecommunications Standards Institute(ETSI)’s online IPR database as of January 2011, are analyzed in quantitative methods. The analysis results present status and statistics of LTE essential patents by major countries, applicant companies and technical fields. And a comparative study is done using 4 patent indices limited to the LTE essential patents issued in the United States. It is expected that results herein are useful for not only figuring out the technological competitiveness of countries and companies in LTE market, but also suggesting a guide to strategic IPR management for related industries.
