<P>We report an uncommon case of solitary, small hepatic angiosarcoma that was initially considered as a hemangioma. We present the imaging findings, with an emphasis on the initial and follow-up CT and MR findings, as well as report on the more suggestive findings of angiosarcoma than those of a hemangioma.</P>

Purpose : This study was performed to compare the diagnostic ability of conventional intraoral radiographs with that of digital subtraction image and to assess the quantifying ability of digital subtraction image for simulated apical root resorption Materials and Methods : Conventional intraoral radiographs and digital images of ten sound maxillary central incisors and those with simulated apical root resorption were taken with varying horizontal and vertical angulations of the x-ray beam. The diagnostic accuracy to detect the lesion was evaluated on conventional intraoral radiographs and digital subtraction images by ROC analysis. The amount of simulated apical root resorption was also estimated on the reconstruction images by Emago□ and compared with actual amount of tooth loss using paired t-test. Results : The diagnostic accuracy of conventional intraoral radiographs to detect the apical root resorption was low(ROC area = 0.6446), and the sensitivity and the specificity of digital subtraction images were 100%, respectively. The calculated amounts of apical root resorption showed no statistically significant difference with the actual amounts of the lesion (p 〉 0.05). Conclusion : Digital subtraction radiography is powerful tool to detect the small apical root resorption, and quantitative analysis of small amounts of the lesion can be evaluated by digital subtraction radiography.(Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2001;31:51-5)

<P>Deregulated Wnt signaling pathway is implicated in many hereditary diseases and tumorigenesis including colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma and gastric cancer. In this study, to assess the relationship between chemically induced gastric tumor and canonical Wnt signaling pathway in genetically intact mice, histopathological and quantitative mRNA analyses were performed in C57BL/6J mice given drinking water containing N-methyl- N-nitrosurea (MNU). 60.5% of gastric adenoma and 27.9% of adenocarcinoma were observed 48 weeks after first administration. Also, in immunohistochemical analysis, aberrant expressions of phospho-GSK-3β, β-catenin, cyclin D1, c-Myc, osteopontin and COX-2 were found. In double immunofluorescent-antibody stains, β-catenin accumulation was colocalized with other proteins. mRNA levels of cyclin D1, c-myc and COX-2 were relatively higher in adenocarcinoma. Altogether, canonical Wnt pathway was highly involved in MNU induced gastric neoplasia of C57BL/6J mice, and it could be a considerably suitable system for the study to examine the linkage between gastric tumorigenesis and the canonical Wnt pathway.</P>

<P>Liver cancer is the third most common cancer, and the incidence as well as the mortality rate of liver cancer are on the increase. There are many signaling pathways that are involved in hepatic tumorigenesis. One of these pathways, the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta)/Smad pathway with KLF10, has been reported to suppress cellular proliferation in most cases. However, the actual functions of KLF10 in various pathophysiological conditions are still fragmentary and unclear. In the present study, the practical role of KLF10 in DEN-induced hepatic carcinogenesis, was elucidated using KLF10 null mice. In the necropsy and histopathological analysis, KLF10 KO mice exhibited lower tumor incidence and PCNA labeling indices than these values in the wild-type mice. Additional analyses revealed that the mRNA and protein levels of Smad3, TGF-beta 1, TGF-beta RI and p15 were increased in the tumor tissues of the KLF10 KO mice, while those of cMyc and cyclin D1 were downregulated. The level of phospho-Smad3 was also significantly higher in the tumor tissues of the KLF10 KO mice. All together, the KLF10 KO condition may reinforce the TGF-beta-Smad signaling pathway and confer tumor-suppressor effects against chemically induced liver tumorigenesis.</P>

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas in late adult life, but its incidence in oral and maxillofacial region is extremely rare. We report a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma which occurred in the infratemporal fossa. Conventional radiograph of this case showed an ill-defined radiolucent lesion in the alveolar bone of the right maxillary first molar area, the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, and the ascending ramus of mandible. MRI demonstrated a well defined mass of intermediate signal intensity in T1 weighted images but T2 weighted images showed two distinctive regions of different characteristics. Upper portion of the lesion was of hyperintense signal but (at) lower protion, the signal intensity decreased clearly, which might mean that this lesion(mass) is composed of two different subtypes though it couldn't be confirmed by histopathological examination. Biopsy was taken the lesion as only in the soft tissue of the maxillary posterior alveolar region and confirmed the storiform-pleomorphic type of malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Histopathological subtype was well consistent with the relatively aggressive imaging findings of that region. We expect more detailed analysis of the nature of malignant fibrous histiocytoma with improvement of the imaging modality and the identification of the relationship between diagnostic imaging and histopathologic findings.(J Korean Oral Maxillofac Radiol 1999;29:533-548)
Salmonella typhi 에 기인한 췌장농양 1 예

Salmonella infection occurs in 5 different clinical forms; gasteroenteritis, enteric fever, bacteremia, chronic carrier state and localization at one or more sites. Extraintestinal pyogenic infections caused by salmonella species include soft tissue abscesses, bone and joint infections, cholecystitis, liver abscess and splenic abscess etc. Pancreatic abscess due to Salmonella typhi is a very rare extraintestinal manifestation of salmonellosis. Infection pathways may be considered as reflux of infected bile through the pancreatic duct, hematogenous spread from a distant site or lymphatic spread from the intestinal tract. Treatment of pancreatic abscess needs surgical intervention and antibiotics therapy. We have experienced a case of a 40-years-old female with pancreatic abscess due to Salmonella typhi. She was treated with ultrasonography-guided catheter drainage and intravenous ceftriaxone for 18 days. After 14 days, the sonographic examination revealed the abscess cavity in pancreas almost disappeared. We report this case with review of literatures.
