Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of monomer and filler compositions on the rheological properties related to the handling characteristics of resin composites. Methods. Resin matrices that Bis-GMA as base monomer was blended with TEGDMA as diluent at various ratio were mixed with the Barium glass (0.7 um and 1.0 um), 0.04 um fumed silica and 0.5 um round silica. All used fillers were silane treated. In order to vary the viscosity of experimental composites, the type and content of incorporated fillers were changed. Using a rheometer, a steady shear test and a dynamic oscillatory shear test were used to evaluate the viscosity (η) of resin matrix, and the storage shear modulus (G′), the loss shear modulus (G″), the loss tangent (tanδ) and the complex viscosity (η*) of the composites as a function of frequency ω= 0.1-100 rad/s. To investigate the effect of temperature on the viscosity of composites, a temperature sweep test was also undertaken. Results. Resin matrices were Newtonian fluid regardless of diluent concentration and all experimental composites exhibited pseudoplastic behavior with increasing shear rate. The viscosity of composites was exponentially increased with increasing filler volume%. In the same filler volume, the smaller the fillers were used, the higher the viscosities were. The effect of filler size on the viscosity was increased with increasing filler content. Increasing filler content reduced tanδby increasing the G′further than the G″. The viscosity of composites was decreased exponentially with increasing temperature.

This study was to investigate the effect of horticulture therapy on the healing and rehabilitation of the mentally retarded (MR) and physical disorder (PD) persons. Horticultural therapy program was carried at S rehabilitation center located in Kyounggi-DO from Jun 29, 1999 to Oct 12, 1999. The participants in this program were 36 clients of MR and PD. They attended 14 times once a week for 1 hour at a time for horticultural therapy. Evaluation of horticultural activities and ADL (Activities of daily living) has been assessed two times, that is, before and after horticultural therapy program (HTP) whereas horticultural therapy group activity treatment procedure and horticulture task skill inventory have been assessed 3 times, that is, before HTP and after each 7 weeks. MR in the evaluation of horticultural activities showed statistically significant in participation, interest and assistance, verbal interaction during activity, self-concept and identity, need-drive adaptation, interpersonal and social relations, cognition and problem solving, exercise perceptivity, life-tasks skill and vocational adjustment. In activities group of MR also showed significant improvement in terms of physical perceptual abilities, cognitive ability, writing ability, social interaction (P<0.001). Additionally, their horticulture task skill were improved significantly in skill and efficiency factor (P<0.008) and their ADL were changed positively but not significant. On the other hand, PD in evaluation of horticultural activities showed significantly positive changes in self-concept and identity, interpersonal and social relations, life-tasks skill and vocational adjustment. However, physical perceptual abilities factor was proven to be effective in horticultural therapy group activities treatment procedure (P<0.002). Only grooming was significantly improved in ADL evaluation of PD (P<0.03). Putting these results together, it was found that horticultural therapy programs would be very useful for rehabilitation and healing method in both MR and PD.
Vol.5 No.-

This study evaluated the hypothesis that if hydrophilic nanofillers were dispersed evenly within the adhesive layer under moist conditions, adding them to a one-bottle dentin adhesive might improve the mechanical properties of the adhesive layer, and accordingly increase the bond strength. The flexural strength (FS), the degree of conversion (DC), and the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) to the dentin of four experimental ethanol-based one-bottle dentin adhesives containing 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0 wt % of 12-nm hydrophilic fumed silica were evaluated, and the distribution of the nanofillers were compared using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Although the nanofiller content did not affect the DC, the FS tended to increase with increasing nanofiller content. The MTBS appeared to increase when up to 1.0 wt % of the nanofillers were added, but they were statistically not significant. However, when 3.0 wt % of the nanofillers were added, the MTBS decreased significantly comparing to the adhesive containing 0.5 wt % nanofillers (p < 0.05). The TEM image suggested that if the nanofillers within the adhesive were 3.0 wt % and applied to a wet dentin surface, they aggregated easily into large clusters and would decrease the MTBS. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
A thick oxygen-inhibited layer (OIL) on a cured adhesive layer (AL) is believed to result in both good adaptation of composite resin (CR) and high bond strength. A high degree of conversion (DC) of the AL is also needed for durable bonding. This study evaluated the hypothesis that increasing the DC by prolonging the light-curing time of adhesive bonding resin might decrease the bond strength of the adhesive to dentin because of the subsequent thinning of the OIL thickness. The OIL thickness and the DC of solvent-removed One Step and D/E bonding resin of All Bond 2 (Bisco, USA) were measured simultaneously with FT-NIR spectroscopy according to increasing light-cure times (10, 20, 30, and 60 s) so as to evaluate their effect on the microtensile bond strength. The bonded interfaces were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. Excessive irradiation of light-curing adhesives increased the DC, but decreased the OIL thickness. When the OIL was significantly thin by curing the adhesives for 30 or 60 s, defects were observed at the interface between the AL and the CR, as well as at the interface between the AL and the hybrid layer. When the OIL was thick, free radicals from the overlying CR may have diffused into the unreacted monomer mixtures of the OIL, chemically connecting the cured AL and the newly curing composite. It was found that to obtain maximum dentin bond strength, light-curing adhesives should be cured for the irradiation time recommended by the manufacturer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
