        Dietary intakes of vitamin A and C were studied with cardiovascular patients in Chungnam area. Seventy five out-patients(63.3±9.07 years old) with myocardial infarction(MI) history of more than 3 month past were selected and all subjects were gathered at once for cardiac rehabilitation program. Twenty four hour recall was conducted to investigate amounts of dietary vitamin A and C intakes by trained interviewers. The results showed that calorie intake was lower than recommended level for most patients while huge variation was observed in the amount of dietary vitamin A intake. Dietary vitamin C intake was adequate for most patients. When gender comparison was conducted, female patients showed much lower calorie and vitamin A intakes compared to male patients. As age increased, vitamin A intake was decreased while calorie and vitamin C intake did not show any differences. In conclusion, vitamin A and C intakes as well as calorie intake of MI patients in Chungnam area was not adequate. The present data suggested that proper nutritional advice was essential for rehabilitation of MI patients and to improve Patients' health.

      • 대전지역 대학생의 학교 식당 이용실태 및 만족도 조사

        The aspects and satisfaction on university foodservice were investigated to provide basic information for better foodservice in university by questionnaires. The survey was conducted in Daejon, and data were analyzed by SAS. Although 87.3% of subjects were under foodservice, only 2.0% of them preferred the foods served in university. The most favorite reason for foodservice was indicated as no need on lunch bag(31.1%) and frendship of classmates(25.5%). The most unfavorite reason for foodservice was indicated as bad taste of foods(68.7%) or many dislike foods(13.2%), also dirty eating place(7.7%). The subject liked ssalbap, baechu kimchi, beef foods. The acceptance about kongbap, yulmu kirnchi, beef products was higher in men than women(p<0.05). The preference of mieokkuk was higher in women and that of beef soup was higher in men(p<0.05). The degree of satisfaction was lower in men than in women about the amount of foods(p<0.001). Also the degree of satisfaction was lower in women than in men about sanitary condition of eating place. 54.6% of them had taken the unwanted materials in foods and 3% of them experienced the deteriorated food. The results suggest that food preference of subjects should be considered in meal planning and various cooking method should be utilized to enhance taste of foods for better foodservice. Also, the importance of various foods intake must be periodically and continuously taught to them through nutrition education.

        In order to obtain the basic data for artificial maturity control of 'Mibaek' peach, GA and ethephon were foliar sprayed 4 weeks prior to harvest, and their effects on fruit maturity and quality were examined. GA and ethephon tended to decrease the fruit weight except 100mg ㆍ L-1 GA+50 to 100mg · L-1 ethephon treatment. GA increased the fruit firmness, and ethephon at higher concentration increased the fruit drop. Harvest date was advanced for 7 to 8 days by ethephon while was delayed for 6 to 8 days by GA treatment, regardless of concentration.

        Effect of 2,4- D application on the fruit maturity and quality of 'Harcot' apricot and 'Mibaek' peach was examined. Leaf area of 'Harcot' apricot was not affected by 2,4-D while that of 'Mibaek' peach was increased by 35mg · L-1 2,4-D. Application of 2,4-D at 35mgㆍL-1 increased the fruit weight of both species, and that of 'Harcot' was doubled. Soluble solids content of 'Harcot' was decreased by 2,4-D while that of 'Mibaek' was not affected. Fruit maturity of 'Harcot' and 'Mibaek' was enhanced for respective 4 and 1 day by 2,4-D application. Percent fruit cracking of 'Harcot' apricot was decreased by 35mg · L-1 2,4-D.

      • Complementation of PAT Gene in the Tryptophan Mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana

        In Arabidopsis thaliana, mutants are currently being used as tools for studing plant development and for examining metabolic pathway. Phosphoribosylanthranilate transferase (PAT) catalyzes the second step of the tryptophan biosynthetic pathway and is encoded by a single-copy gene that complements all the visible phenotypes of the tryptophan mutant (trp1-100) of Arabidopsis. The trp1-100 is blue fluorescent under UV light because it accumulates anthranilate. To obtain a plant with reducing PAT activity, PAT1 genes with several internal deletions in different promoter regions were introduced into trp1-100 using Agrobacterium. Then, homozygous T_3 plants were isolated and examined for blue fluorescence. Introduction of the PAT1 gene fusants results in the reversion of fluorescence phenotype except in the case of pHS105. A plant line carrying pHS105 gene fusant dose not completely complement the blue fluorescence but, it accumulates less anthranilate than trp1-100. The activity of PAT was reduced in the transgenic mutant as well.

        Electronic Structure of Organic/organic Interface Depending on Heteroepitaxial Growth Using Templating Layer

        The electronic structure at organic-organic interface gives essential information on device performance such as charge transport and mobility. Especially, the molecular orientation of organic material can affect the electronic structure at interface and ultimately the device performance in organic photovoltaics. The molecular orientation is examined by the change in ionization potential (IP) for metal phthalocyanines (MPc, M=Zn, Cu)/fullerene (C60) interfaces on ITO by adding the CuI templating layer through ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurement. On CuPc/C60 bilayer, the addition of CuI templating layer represents the noticeable change in IP, while it hardly affects the electronic structure of ZnPc/C60 bilayer. The CuPc molecules on CuI represent relatively lying down orientation with intermolecular π-π overlap being aligned in vertical direction. Consequently, in organic photovoltaics consisting of CuPc and C60 as donor and acceptor, respectively, the carrier transport along the direction is enhanced by the insertion of CuI templaing layer. In addition, optical absorption in CuPc molecules is increased due to aligned transition matrix elements. Overall the lying down orientation of CuPc on CuI will improve photovoltaic efficiency.

        Blood pressure measurements and hypertension in infants, children, and adolescents: from the postmercury to mobile devices

        A mercury sphygmomanometer (MS) has been the gold standard for pediatric blood pressure (BP) measurements, and diagnosing hypertension is critical. However, because of environmental issues, other alternatives are needed. Noninvasive BP measurement devices are largely divided into auscultatory and oscillometric types. The aneroid sphygmomanometer, the currently used auscultatory method, is inferior to MS in terms of limitations such as validation and regular calibration and difficult to apply to infants, in whom Korotkoff sounds are not audible. The oscillometric method uses an automatic device that eliminates errors caused by human observers and has the advantage of being easy to use; however, owing to its measurement accuracy issues, the development of an international validation protocol for children is important. The hybrid method, which combines the auscultatory and electronic methods, solves some of these problems by eliminating the observer bias of terminal digit preference while maintaining measurement accuracy; however, the auscultatory method remains limited. As the age-related characteristics of the pediatric group are heterogeneous, it is necessary to reconsider the appropriate BP measurement method suitable for this indication. In addition, the mobile application-based BP measurement market is growing rapidly with the development of smartphone applications. Although more research is still needed on their accuracy, many experts expect that mobile application-based BP measurement will effectively reduce medical costs due to increased ease of access and early BP management.

        Is Metabolic Syndrome One of the Risk Factors for Gallbladder Polyps Found by Ultrasonography during Health Screening?

        Background/Aims: We conducted this study to identify the risk factors for finding gallbladder polyps (GBP) in Korean subjects during health screening, and to determine the nature of the association between the presence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and the development of GBP. Methods: A total of 1,523 subjects were enrolled, comprising 264 with GBP (81 women and 183 men) and 1,259 controls (696 women and 563 men with normal GB). Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), insulin, fasting blood sugar (FBS), lipids, liver enzymes, hepatitis B antigens (HBs Ag), and hepatitis C antibodies (HCV Ab) were measured. MS was considered to be present when three or more of the NCEP-ATPIII (National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III) criteria were satisfied. Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Independent risk factors were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. Results: Univariate analysis revealed that the risk factors for GBP were age, sex, WC, smoking history, BP, BMI, FBS, serum lipids, HOMA-IR score, and MS. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk factors for GBP were presence of MS (Odds Ratio (OR)=2.35, 95%Confidence Interval (CI)=1.53-3.60), being male (OR=2.34, 95%CI=1.72-3.18), HOMA-IR score>2.5 (OR=1.64, 95%CI=1.19-2.26), and higher WC (OR=1.4, 95%CI=1.05-1.88). MS was present in 20.8% and 5.9% of GBP patients and controls, respectively, and was the highest risk factor for GBP. Conclusions: MS, male, insulin resistance, and abdominal obesity are probably risk factors for GBP, with MS appearing to be strongly associated with GBP in Koreans. (Gut and Liver 2007;1:138-144)

      • Graphene oxide induces apoptotic cell death in endothelial cells by activating autophagy via calcium-dependent phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Despite the rapid expansion of the biomedical applications of graphene oxide (GO), safety issues related to GO, particularly with regard to its effects on vascular endothelial cells (ECs), have been poorly evaluated. To explore possible GO-mediated vasculature cytotoxicity and determine lateral GO size relevance, we constructed four types of GO: micrometer-sized GO (MGO; 1089.9±135.3nm), submicrometer-sized GO (SGO; 390.2±51.4nm), nanometer-sized GO (NGO; 65.5±16.3nm), and graphene quantum dots (GQDs). All types but GQD showed a significant decrease in cellular viability in a dose-dependent manner. Notably, SGO or NGO, but not MGO, potently induced apoptosis while causing no detectable necrosis. Subsequently, SGO or NGO markedly induced autophagy through a process dependent on the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)-mediated phosphorylation of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), leading to the dissociation of Beclin-1 from the Beclin-1–Bcl-2 complex. Autophagy suppression attenuated the SGO- or NGO-induced apoptotic cell death of ECs, suggesting that SGO- or NGO-induced cytotoxicity is associated with autophagy. Moreover, SGO or NGO significantly induced increased intracellular calcium ion (Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>) levels. Intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> chelation with BAPTA-AM significantly attenuated microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3-II accumulation and JNK phosphorylation, resulting in reduced autophagy. Furthermore, we found that SGO or NGO induced Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> release from the endoplasmic reticulum through the PLC β3/IP<SUB>3</SUB>/IP<SUB>3</SUB>R signaling axis. These results elucidate the mechanism underlying the size-dependent cytotoxicity of GOs in the vasculature and may facilitate the development of a safer biomedical application of GOs.</P> <P><B>Statement of Significance</B></P> <P>Graphene oxide (GO) have received considerable attention with respect to their utilization in biomedical applications. However, GO-related safety issues concerning human vasculature are very limited. In this manuscript, we report for the first time the differential size-related biological effects of GOs on endothelial cells (ECs). Notably, Subnanometer- and nanometersized GOs induce apoptotic death in ECs via autophagy activation. We propose a molecular mechanism for the GO-induced autophagic cell death through the PLCβ3/IP3/Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>/JNK signaling axis. Our findings could be provide a better understanding of the GO sizedependent cytotoxicity in vasculature and facilitate the future development of safer biomedical applications of GOs.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
