I reviewed and reinterpreted the structure and scale of the ship ’Raphael’ objectively and empirically. The ship ‘Raphael’ was a ‘fishing vessel’ which was operated in the West Sea in the late Joseon period and it is mentioned in a letter of Bishop Ferreol and Priest Daveluy. The ship, where Saint Andrew Kim Dae-Geon priest and his companions rod, was named after ‘Raphael’ which is an archangel meaning a guardian. The direction of this study was as follows. First, the structure stated in a letter of Bishop Ferreol and Priest Daveluy was classified easily and structural analysis was conducted in comparison with data on fishing vessels at that time in order to understand the structure of Raphael, whose structure has been ambiguous so far. Second, Structural analysis was conducted by reviewing data on fishing vessels that were in operation in Hwanghae Province, Gyeonggi Province and South Chungcheong Province in the late Joseon period, vessels of Joseon period surveyed by Japanese in the 1910~1921s and photos on vessels in the late Joseon period objectively and the structure and shape of the ship ‘Raphael’ were estimated. Third, the author of the study re-interpreted the size of the ship by reviewing the size, structure and shape of ‘Raphael’ empirically based on his experience and knowhow on building traditional ships. The study found that the structure and shape of ‘Raphael’ was very similar to those of fishing vessels operated in the West Sea in the late Joseon period. In addition, Bishop Ferreol and Priest Daveluy explained the size of the ship ‘Raphael’ in a letter. The two people explained the size of the ship not in Cheok (尺, a Korean unit of length), which was widely used in the Joseon period at that time, but in a French unit of measurement such as pied, a dependent noun form of feet and pouces, a noun form of inch. Therefore, the size was reinterpreted in pied unit, which is different from Cheok (尺, a Korean unit of length) unit that was used in previous studies. The results showed that the ship ‘Raphael’ had narrow width compared with length and high depth compared with its width as stated by Bishop Ferreol and Priest Daveluy. In this case, this shape has high risk of overturning due to lack of restoring force of the ship. Accordingly restoring force was secured by reducing the depth of 8 pied as explained by Priest Daveluy to 5 to 6 pied and the size was estimated to be 9.75m long, 4.22m wide and 1.62~1.94m deep to have the size that can be characterized as a fishing vessel.

Common dental procedures(dental extraction & minor operation) are potentially stress-inducing in many patients, especially medically compromised patients. The body’s response to dental stress involves the cardiovascular system(an increase in cardiovascular workload), the respiratory organ and the endocrine system(change in metabolism). To minimize the stress to the medical risk patient, the stress reduction protocol was established. The obtained contents were as follows: (1) Recognize the patient’s degree of medical risk (2) Complete medical consultation before dental therapy (3) Schedule the patient’s appointment in the morning (4) Monitor and record preoperative and postoperative vital signs (5) Use psychosedation during therapy (6) Use adequate pain control during therapy (7) Short length of appointment : do not exceed the patient’s limits of tolerance (8) Follow up with postoperative pain/anxiety control (9) Telephone the higher medical risk patient later on the same day that treatment was given Though the stress reduction protocol above was applied to the dental extraction in medically compromised patients with the advanced infected teeth, the final responsibility for the complications(syncope, bleeding & infection, etc.) in a patient rests with the dentist who ultimately treats him. For the prevention of postextraction complications & poor prognosis, the authors treated the advanced infected teeth with the pulp extirpation, opening drainage through the canal and complete occlusal reduction. The final extraction and wound closure were then done after 1~2 weeks. The final prognosis was comfortable without common complications.
