Background: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) has rapidly increased. Even though e-cigarettes are actually not smoking cessation alternative supplies, some people perceive them as smoking cessation alternative supplies. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between e-cigarette experiences and smoking cessation behaviors among Korean adults. Methods: Cross-sectional data was collected from 7,550 participants of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2014. A total of 867 participants who were current smokers were enrolled in this study. Multi-variable logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the relationship between the smoking cessation behavior and the e-cigarette experience. Results: The e-cigarette experience rate of current smokers was 22.1%. The e-cigarette experience rate was higher in groups with the higher income, the higher education level, and the white collar jobs. Smokers with experience of smoking cessation (odds ratio [OR], 3.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.67 to 5.76) and with intention to smoking cessation in the future (OR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.05 to 2.43) were more likely to experience the e-cigarette. Especially, smokers who used smoking cessation alternative supplies were more likely to experience the e-cigarette than smokers who did not use it (OR, 2.87; 95% CI, 1.59 to 5.18). Conclusion: We confirmed that e-cigarette experiences were associated with smoking cessation experience, smoking cessation plan, and use of smoking cessation aid among smokers in Korea. Additional studies should be continued to confirm whether e-cigarette are continuously influencing the smoking cessation of current smokers in South Korea as one of the smoking cessation alternative supplies.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 (MEN2) is a rare hereditary complex disorder characterized by the presence of medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, and other hyperplasias or neoplasias of different endocrine tissues within a single patient. Simultaneous occurrence of MEN2 and other cancers that are derived from different origins is rare. In this report, we present a patient with known MEN2 who developed breast cancer as a result of invasive ductal carcinoma. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy and unilateral adrenalectomy due to medullary thyroid cancer and pheochromocytoma. Although patients with MEN2 may demonstrate a variety of neoplastic disorders, it is difficult to identify a case report of MEN2 with breast cancer. In addition, no etiological relationships between breast cancer and MEN2 have been reported to date. Thus, here we report a case of known MEN2 with breast cancer and present a review of the literature. (Korean J Med 79:432-437, 2010)

Pseudohypoparathyroidism is a rare disease caused by resistance to parathyroid hormone, and is associated with typical clinical typical symptoms such as tetany and seizures, hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and increased parathyroid hormone levels. Pseudohypoparathyroidism is classified to Type Ia, Ib, Ic and II according to the clinical and biochemical manifestations. Type Ia and Ic have morphological characteristics called Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy. Type Ib differs from type II for the pathogenesis. Type Ib may~ receptors and type II may~ pathway, but the pathophysiology of type II is not clear yet. Administration of parathyroid hormone extract may help to distinguish between the two types. We report a case of a pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ib or II patient who had tetany, hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia with normal morphologic features.

Combination treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin has been established as a standard therapy for chronic hepatitis C. Although interferon therapy is relatively safe, an important side effect is the induction of autoantibodies and autoimmune disease, especially autoimmune thyroid disease. Interferon associated autoimmune thyroid disease can consist of autoimmune hypothyroidism, Graves’ disease, and destructive thyroiditis. Thyroid disease may lead to dose reduction or discontinuation of therapy. To the best of our knowledge, there are no case reports of pegylated interferon induced autoimmune hypothyroidism in Korea. We report here a case of a 26-year-old woman who developed hypothyroidism during antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis C with pegylated interferon.
