Abdominal muscle plays a crucial role in postural control and respiration control. However, thickness of abdominal muscle in the paretic side of a hemiplegic patient has not been reported in previous studlies. The purpose of this research was to compare lateral abdominal muscle thickness between the nonparetic and paretic side in patients with chronic stroke using rehabilitative ultrasound imaging. Twenty two patients with chronic stroke parlicipated in this study. Absolute thickness of transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO) and external oblique (EO) was measured at the end of inspiration and expiration during quiet breathing, and relative thickness was calculated (thickness of each muscle as a percentage of total muscle thickness). Ultrasound imaging was recorded three times and the average value was determined for statistical analysis. Differences in absolute and relative lateral abdominal muscle thickness between the nonparetic and paretic side were assessed with paired t-tests. Absolute muscle thickness of the paretic side TrA was thinner than that of the nonparetic side at the end of inspiration and expiration during quiet breathing. Relative muscle thickness of the paretic side TrA was thinner than the paretic side only at the end of expiration during quiet breathing (p>.05). Therefore, it is necessary to strength TrA in patients with chronic stroke during physical therapy intervention. Further study is needed whether physical therapy intervension will induce TrA thickness in patients with chronic stroke in prospective study design.

Lumbopelvic stabilization exercise has become the most popular treatment method in lumbar rehabilitation since its effectiveness was shown in some aspects of pain and disability. The abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) has been extensively implemented to promote lumbopelvic stability. However, performing ADIM correctly is difficult even for healthy subjects, and it is time consuming to train people in ADIM. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare abdominal muscle [rectus abdominalis (RA), external oblique (EO), and transverse abdominis/internal oblique (TrA/IO)] activity during lumbopelvic stabilization exercises (ADIM only, ADIM with a ball, maximum exhalation only, and maximum exhalation with a ball) performed in a supine position with feet against a wall. Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Surface electromyography was used to measure abdominal muscle activity during lumbopelvic stabilization exercises. A one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to determine the statistical significance of RA, EO, and TrA/IO muscle activity during four lumbopelvic stabilization exercises. Both-side TrA/IO muscle activity was significantly greater with maximum exhalation with a ball than with ADIM only or ADIM with a ball (p<.008). The results of this study suggest that maximum exhalation with a ball can be used as an effective lumbopelvic stabilization exercise to increase TrA/IO muscle activity in healthy subjects.

Selective oxidation of cyclohexane in acetone solution has been studied using iron catalysts with hydrogen peroxide in-situ produced by palladium catalyst. Iron tetraphenylporphyrin chloride shows the highest activity among the tested chlorides and porphyrin complexes of some metals of the first transiton series. Iron chloride and iron tetraphenylporphyrin chloride were supported on four kinds of 4-vinylpyridine copolymer with styrene or divinyl-benzene. Nitrogen 1s photoelectron spectra give the evidence that pyridyl nitrogens of the 4-vinyl pyridine copolymer act as ligands to bind iron species. The copolymer with styrene is the most efficient support for the binding because its solubility in catalyst preparation solvent (methylene chloride) gives the pyridyl group advantage to contact with the iron catalysts. However, better catalytic activity per iron atom could be obtained with a rigid crosslinked polymer due to active site isolation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of treadmill training on gait, balance, and trunk control in a patient with hemiparesis. A female subject who had suffered a left hemiparesis 12 months previously was selected for this study. A single subject ABA design was used. Eight data-collection sessions were conducted during each of three phases (baseline-intervention-withdrawal). During baseline and withdrawal phases, the treatment based on Bobath approach was performed for the subject, and during the intervention phase, treadmill walking training was added. Assessment tools were made using the 10 m walk test, Rivermead Visual Gait Assessment(RVGA), Berg Balance Scale(BBS), and a seated Lateral Reach Test(LRT). During the intervention phase, the time measured in 10 m walk test and the scores of RVGA and BBS were significantly improved, and the number of steps in 10 m walk test and LRT showed a small improvement. During withdrawal phase, the time measured in 10 m walk test and the scores of RVGA and BBS were shown the carry-over effect. This findings indicate that treadmill training has significant effect to gait function and balance in a patient with chronic hemiparesis.

One case of ovarian pregnancy. Ovarian Pregnacy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy. Its estimated overall incidence is highly variable. Ovarian pregnancy occurs in the corpus luteum mostly, and is usually accompanied with the rupture of the ovary and massive hemoperitoneum. It presents as a hemorrhagic ovary and frequently misdiagnosed as a ruptured corpus luteum. Risk factors to ovarian pregnancy include a history of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), prior pelvic surgery, use of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) and ovulation induction. We have experienced one case of ovarian pregnancy and reviewed it briefly.
Cisplatin 내성 난소암 세포주에서 Cisplatin 처리 후 p53, p16, PTEN, c-myc 유전자의 발현

본 연구는 cisplatin의 내성을 갖는 난소암 세포주를 대상으로 세포의 전달체계에서 종양억제 역할을 하는 유전자 p53, p16, PTEN, c-myc의 발현이 어떻게 변화되는지를 통해 항암제 내성의 원인을 밝히고자 수행하였다. 연구 방법 : Cisplatin 내성 난소암 세포주 (cisplatin resistance ovarian carcinoma cell line; A2780/CP70)과 민감성 난소암 세포주 (cisplatin sensitive ovarian carcinoma cell line; A2780)를 대상으로 cisplatin을 처리한 후 MTT assay로 cytotoxicity를 확인하였고, p53, p16, PTEN, c-myc에 대한 western blot analysis를 실시하였다. 결과 : Cisplatin 처리 전 p16은 발현되지 않았고, p53, PTEN, c-myc 유전자는 모두 발현됨을 확인하였다. p53, PTEN 유전자의 경우 A2780/CP70에서 각각 40, 30% 적게 발현하였다. Cisplatin 처리 후 cisplatin을 처리하기 전과 비교해서 유전자의 발현이 양적으로 약 2-3배 증가함을 보였다. PTEN 발현이 A2780과 비교하여 A2780/CP70의 경우 A2780 보다 36% 낮게 발현되었음을 확인하였다. 결론 : 난소암 세포주 A2780/CP70에서 PTEN 유전자의 발현이 상대적으로 낮게 확인된 점으로 볼 때, p53 유전자의 변이와 함께 cisplatin 약제 내성을 결정하는 한 요소일 수 있으며, PTEN 기능에 대한 추가적 연구가 요구된다. Objective : The chemotherapeutic agent Cisplatin (cis-diammminedichloroplatinum (Ⅱ)) is particularly effective against ovarian carcinoma, however, its clinical success is limited by recurrent drug resistant tumors. It is mandatory to reveal the mechanism of cisplatin resistance for the ovarian cancer treatment or prognosis. This study assessed the expression of p53, p16, PTEN, and c-myc genes with cisplatin treatment in human ovarian cancer cell lines; cisplatin-sensitive (A2780) and cisplatin-resistan (A2780/CP70) ovarian cancer cell line to elucidate the mechanism of cisplatin resistance. Methods : Cytotoxic assay for cisplatin was performed in cisplatin-sensitive ovarian cancer cell line, A2780 and cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell line, A2780/CP70. After cisplatin treatment, expression of p53, p16, PTEN, c-myc was analyzed by Western blot analysis. Results : PTEN expression was significantly about 30% higher in A2780 than in A2780/CP70. p16 expression was defective in both cell lines. p53 and c-myc expression was no difference in cancer cell lines. After cisplatin treatment, the expression of p53, PTEN, c-myc genes increased 2-3 times in both cell lines. Conclusion : Relatively lower expression of PTEN was detected in A2780/CP70 suggesting that PTEN expression might play a role in the development of cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer cell line, A2780/CP70.
