        Becoming a Vegetarian in Korea: The Sociocultural Implications of Vegetarian Diets in Korean Society

        This essay is a social psychological analysis of the meaning of and social pressures against vegetarianism in a highly collective cultural context. It postulates potential difficulties in social relationships as the real challenge in becoming a vegetarian in Korea. The research is based on data collected from participant observations and in-depth interviews conducted with 38 vegetarians in the Seoul metropolitan area in 2010–2011. Given the social importance placed on ordering and sharing similar meals together in order to foster intimate relationships and emotional bonds in Korea, vegetarianism can be considered deviant social behavior discordant with the nonvegetarian norm. In highly collective Korean society, it is regarded as a bad practice that disturbs harmony within the group, and vegetarians/vegans, especially those who are younger and occupy lower social positions, face enormous social pressures to yield to a conventional omnivorous diet, especially on occasions, such as a family gathering and a company dinner. While some people fail to maintain their vegetarian diet, many vegetarians/vegans try to cope with such social pressures by using various bargaining strategies, such as avoiding meal time, hiding their identity, giving an excuse, and doing routine chores for everyone else at the dinner table.

        스테인리스 컵의 온도와 무게에 따른 무게감 분석

        The weight of an object is an important research topic in terms of sense, and objects have size-weight, color-weight, and material-weight illusions due to the influence of size, color, and material and the weight of the object. Although temperature is a very important environmental factor in our daily life, there is a dearth of studies on how the temperature of an object affects its perceived weight. This study analyzed the effect of an object’s temperature on the perceived weight. A stainless steel cup, in which weight and temperature are easily adjustable, was selected as a perceived weight measurement object; 5 temperature levels (0, 9, 20, 40, 70 degrees) and 2 weight levels (250, 400 g) were set. A total of 40 healthy men and women in their 20s participated in the experiment. The weight of the given cup compared to the reference cup was evaluated according to the modulus method. The study revealed that both temperature and weight significantly affected the perceived weight. The effect of temperature on the weight was different depending on the weight of the object. When the cup’s weight was small (250 g), the temperature of the cup did not affect the weight. However, the perceived weight of a large cup (400 g) increased at a low temperature. This result suggests that the effect of temperature on the weight of an object depends on the size-weight illusion. 물체의 무게감은 감각 측면에서 중요하게 다뤄진 연구 주제로 물체의 무게뿐만 아니라, 크기, 색상, 재질 등의 영 향을 받아 크기-무게, 색상-무게 그리고 재질-무게 왜곡 현상을 갖는 것으로 알려져 있다. 온도는 우리의 일상생활에 매우 중요한 환경적 요소이나, 물체의 온도가 무게감에 어떤 영향을 미치는지에 대해 충분한 연구가 되어 있지 않다. 본 연구는 물체의 온도가 무게감에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 물체의 온도, 무게를 조정하기 용이한 스테인리스 컵을 무게감 측정 물체로 선정하였고, 온도 5 수준(0, 9, 20, 40, 70℃), 무게 2 수준(250, 400g)의 조합으로 10개의 스테인리스 컵을 준비하였다. 무게감 실험에는 건강한 20대 남여 40명이 참여하였고, modulus 방법에 따라 기준 컵 대비 주어진 컵의 무게감을 평가하였다. 실험 데이터의 분석 결과, 온도, 무게 모두 무게감에 유의한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 온도가 무게감에 주는 영향은 물체의 무게에 따라 다르게 나타났는 데, 적은 컵 무게(250g)로 컵의 무게감이 작은 경우 컵의 온도는 무게감에 영향을 주지 않았다. 반면, 큰 컵 무게 (400g)에서 낮은 온도에서 무게감이 커지는 것으로 나타났다. 이의 결과는 온도의 물체 무게감의 영향이 크기-무게 왜곡에 따라 달라짐을 의미한다.

        플라스틱 재질 주사위에서 무게에 따른 만족도 및 고급감 분석

        Objective: This study analyzed how weight affects the satisfaction and luxuriousness of dice made of plastic, which has not been previously studied. Background: The weight of dice is one of the important factors affecting dice satisfaction, and research has been conducted on the weights that are satisfactory or preferred for various dice. Method: A total of 42 college students in their 20s, whose size estimation ability was verified, evaluated satisfaction and luxuriousness according to the weights of dice. Prototype dice were made to have seven different weight levels. Results: The actual weight of the dice showed a positive correlation with the perceived heaviness, and satisfaction with the dice tended to be higher at weights slightly higher than the original dice weight. Luxuriousness increased as the weight increased, but it was confirmed that there was a limit. Conclusion: As a result of the dice experiment, the patterns of satisfaction and preference turned out to be similar to those of other products. Application: The results can be used to set the weight in the design of plastic dice considering the satisfaction.

        연조직 변형에 의한 해부학적 지표와 피부마커의 변위 상관성을 이용한 동작분석 오차 보정 방법의 적용

        Of many approaches to reduce motion analysis errors, the compensation method of anatomical landmarks estimates the position of anatomical landmarks during motion. The method models the position of anatomical landmarks with joint angle or skin marker displacement using the data of the so-called dynamic calibration in which anatomical landmark positions are calibrated in ad hoc motions. Then the anatomical landmark positions are calibrated in target motions using the model. This study applies the compensation methods with joint angle and skin marker displacement to three lower extremity motions (walking, sit-to-stand/stand-to-sit, and step up/down) in ten healthy males and compares their performance. To compare the performance of the methods,two sets of kinematic variables were calculated using different two marker clusters, and the difference was obtained. Results showed that the compensation method with skin marker displacement had less differences by 30~60% compared to without compensation. And, it had significantly less difference in some kinematic variables (7 of 18) by 25~40% compared to the compensation method with joint angle. This study supports that compensation with skin marker displacement reduced the motion analysis STA errors more reliably than with joint angle in lower extremity motion analysis.

        TV 제스처 상호작용 위한 제스처의 적합성 평가에 대한 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 스마트 TV 명령어의 한 조작 방식인 제스처 상호작용의 적절성을 분석하는 것이다. 제스처 상호작용의 기존 연구들은 (1) 사용 사례에 기반한 상황적 접근, (2) 효과적 제스처 적용을 위한 기술적 접근 그리고 (3) 제스처-명령간의 상황적 관계를 찾는 연계성 접근의 세 종류로 나눌 수 있다. 그러나 제스처의 적용성을 평가한 연구는 거의 없는 형편이다. 이를 위해 ‘제스처 적절성 점수’와 명령어 변수’ 간의 관계 파악을 위한 실험이 수행되었다. 스마트 TV 87개 명령어가 수집되었고, 명령어 변수로 빈도, 수준, 종류가 선택되었다. 그리고 수집 명령어의 수준이 구분되었다. 제스처 적절성 점수는 명령 변수의 수준에 따라 유의하게 달랐고, 명령변수의 최적 수준이 다중회귀분석으로 도출되었다. 연구결과로 부터 높은 빈도, 낮은 수준, 네비게이션 종류의 명령어가 제스처 변환에 적절한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 설계자가 제스처 인터페이스 설계에 적합한 명령어를 선택하는데 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of commands are appropriate to gesticulate when controlling a smart TV. Previous studies on gesture interface could be classified into three approaches; (1) contextual approach: how to suggest appropriate gesture based on the use case, (2) technological approach: how to implement gesture interface effectively and efficiently, (3) relationship approach: how to find the contextual association between command and gesture. However few studies exist emphasize the ‘gesture-ability’ of commands. The experiment was conducted to understand the relationship between ‘gesture-appropriate score’ and ‘command variables’. For the experiment, eighty seven commands of smart TV were collected and three command variables (‘frequency’, ‘depth’, ‘type’) were selected. Also, levels of each command variable were classified. Gesture-appropriate scores were significantly different between the levels of each command variable. The optimal levels of each command variable were suggested by conducting multiple linear regressions. From the results, we found that high frequency level, low depth level, navigation/move type commands were preferred as a gesture interface. With the results of this study, the designers of gesture interface are able to consider the important command variables for designing gesture interface.

        한국 치과의의 근골격계질환 실태 및 원인 조사

        Dentists are known to be highly exposed to the musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). The present study investigated the prevalence of MSD among Korean dentists and association between their MSD and physical workload. In addition, detailed causes related to the physical workloads were identified in dental operation, and needs for improvement of dental instrument and environment were collected from Korean dentists. The standardized Nordic questionnaire was used to survey body troubles and three types of questionnaires were made to investigate the physical workloads, causes of the physical workloads and improvement priority of dental equipments, respectively. A total of 104 Korean dentists were participated in the survey. Neck trouble (82%) was the most prevalent in Korean dentists, and shoulder (68%) and low back trouble (56%) followed, while low back trouble was reported to be most frequent in previous studies. The body troubles were related to the physical workload of the corresponding body parts, although they were not associated with personal characteristics. Most Korean dentists selected ‘to keep direct view inside patient’s mouth’ and ‘no support of the hand with dental instruments’ as the causes of awkward and strenuous work postures. They wanted design improvement for some equipment in their operating room such as operating light and arrangement of workplace.

        농장비 설계를 위한 한국 척수장애인의 대표 인체모델군 개발

        Korea’s agriculture is facing a manpower shortage due to a decrease in the population and an aging workforce. Involving disabled people in agriculture as a solution to the problem of manpower shortage can help both agricultural workers and people with disabilities, and for this purpose, it is necessary to develop agricultural tools that disabled people can use in agricultural tasks. This study was intended to create a representative human body model used in the anthropometric design of agricultural tools for people with spinal cord disabilities. This study used the existing anthropometric data for the spinal cord disabled and created a representative human body model using the method of boundary for the accommodation range of the body size distribution. As a result of factor analysis, 26 body dimensions were reduced to 4 factors, and the representative group had 16 body models to have an accommodation rate of 90% of the distribution. As a result of the evaluation of the accommodation rate of the representative human model group, only 42% of cases satisfied all the ranges of 26 body dimensions for the representative group, but 88% of cases satisfied all the ranges of 23 body dimensions, which is close to the target rate. The representative human model group for spinal cord disabilities was visualized using the Tecnomatix human model module. This can be utilized in identification of problems with existing agricultural tools and anthropometric design for the disabled.
