        Isolation and Characterization of Nonylphenol-degrading Bacteria

        To isolate a nonylphenol (NP)-degrading bacterium, we isolated a single colony from the NP-degrading microbial consortium SW-3, which was previously isolated from an aqueous environment. Ten colonies that exhibited different cell morphologies were isolated and the strains were named SW-3-A, -B, -C, -D, -E, -F1, -F2, -G, -H, and -I. The ability of isolates to degrade NP was evaluated by kinetic analysis by the constant of NP degradation rate (k1) and the half-life time of NP degradation (t1/2). SW-3-F1,-F2, -G, and -I strains were superior at degrading NP. The k1 and t1/2 values of the four strains were sixfold higher and one-sixth lower, respectively, than those of the consortium strain. Additionally, SW-3-F1, -G, and -I strains were tested for their ability to degrade NP during coculture. NP degradation by coculture with a combination of all three strains was inferior to that of culture conducted with single isolates, suggesting that the three strains are antagonistic toward each other during NP degradation.

        최근 자율주행 자동차를 위한 기술들이 활발히 연구되고 있다. 그중에서 긴급상황 자동 브레이크 시스템은 라이다, 레이더 등을 사용하여 주변 환경을 인식하고 사고를 방지한다. 기존의 딥 러닝을 사용한 분류기들은 거리-도플러맵, 마이크로도플러 등을 사용한다. 이러한 이미지는 객체가 레이더를 바라보는 각도에 따른 이미지의 변화가 크다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 분류성능을 향상시키기 위해서 거리-도플러맵과 포인트클라우드맵을 사용한 식별기를 제안한다. 거리-도플러맵을 사용했을 때는 평균 85%의 분류 성능을 얻었으며, 제안한 거리-도플러맵과 포인트클라우드맵을 같이 사용했을 때는 평균 92%의 향상된 성능을 얻었다.

        Taxol 유도체들의 생물학적 거동에 관한 연구

        This study was designed to prospect the 'In-labelled paclitaxel as tumor imaging agent. In order to provide a taxol molecule with a functional group which is able to chelate In-lll, taxol-DTPA conjugate and 2-hemisuccinyltaxol were synthesized by esterification of taxol at C-2 on C-13 carbon with DTPA anhydride and succinic anhydride, respectively. Synthesis yield of the taxol derivatives was 34% for taxol- DTPA and 80% for 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol. Cytotoxicity of the taxol derivatives were measured by MTT method toward cell lines HT29, B16, P388, and CT26. The cytotoxic activities of the taxol derivatives were maintained, although less active than taxol. Radiolabelling of the taxol derivatives were proceeded directly with InCh or indirectly with In-citrate(ligand-exchange method). The ligand-exchane methocl was not suitable because some precipitat:es appeared during the reaction. On the contrary, by direct radiolabelling methnd, we were able to obtain taxol DTPA--'In in 100% radiochemical yield. However, 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol was not labellecl by both methods. Yield and radiochemiral purity of the radiolabelled com- pound were determined by HPI.C, paper chromatography and instant thin layer chromatography. Taxol-DTPA-In was characterized to be hydrophilic by lipophi- licity test, and nearly non-adhesive to HT29, E316, P388, and CT26 by cell hinding affinity test. Binding affinity of the taxol-DTPA-'In complex to serum proteins was also examined by protein precipitation with 30% trichloroacetic acid. The results showed that 309o of the taxol-DTPA-'In complex binds with serum proteins.

        멸치(Engraulis japonicus) 액젓 부산물로부터 마이야르 반응을 통해 유도 된 휘발성 향기성분

        Volatile flavor compounds of optimal Maillard reactions (MR) derived with the addition of precursors (AP), control (without AP) and raw as anchovy Engraulis japonicus sauce residue were identified and comparatively analyzed using solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (SPME/GC/MS). MR was produced by adding 1% (w/w) glucose and mixed amino acids (threonine 0.543%, glutamic acid 0.194%, glycine 0.382%, w/w) to raw (100 g of anchovy sauce residue and 100 mL of distilled water), and heating at 110 °C for 2 h. Among 65 flavor components detected, 7 compounds were produced through Maillard reaction to change in content. A total of 7 volatile flavor compounds, including 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, dimethyl disulfide, methylpyrazine, dimethyl trisulfide, methional, and 2-furanmethanol, tended to increase in the order of raw, control, and MR, but methylpyrazine was not detected in control. Amounts of 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, dimethyl disulfide, methylpyrazine, dimethyl trisulfide, methional, and 2-furanmethanol having positive odors (dark chocolate-, garlic-, hazelnut-, cooked potato-like) were 11.04, 50.15, 3.25, 8.38, 4.60, 9.59, and 3.08 times higher, respectively, in MR than those in raw.

        Oligochitosan as a potential anti-acne vulgaris agent: combined antibacterial effects against Propionibacterium acnes

        To develop an antibacterial treatment for acne vulgaris using natural substance with few side effects, we investigated the antibacterial activities of oligochitosan against acne-related bacteria, particularly Propionibacterium acnes. Oligochitosan showed potent antibacterial effect on P. acnes. Especially, 10 kDa oligochitosan presented the highest antimicrobial effect with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 32–64 lg/mL on P. acnes. In addition, oligochitosan clearly reversed the antibacterial effect of tetracycline and erythromycin on P. acnes in the combination mode. The combination of tetracycline- or erythromycine-10 kDa oligochitosan resulted in a median RFIC range of 0.02–0.56, suggesting that the antibiotics–oligochitosan combination resulted in an antibacterial synergy against P. acnes. Thus, the results obtained in this research strongly supported that erythromycin and tetracycline will restore the antibacterial activity against P. acnes in the combination mode with 10 kDa oligochitosan.

        Antimicrobial Activity of Brown Alga Eisenia bicyclis against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

        We screened for antibacterial substances against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Methanolic extract of Eisenia bicyclis exhibited anti-MRSA activity according to a disk diffusion assay. To identify the active compound(s), the methanolic extract was further fractionated using hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The ethyl acetate-soluble fraction showed both the greatest anti-MRSA activity and the highest polyphenol content. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the ethyl acetate fraction ranged from 32 to 64 μg per mL against methicillin-susceptible S. aureus and MRSA strains. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed that both the methanolic extract and the ethyl acetate soluble fraction contained sizeable quantities of dieckol, which is a known anti-MRSA compound. Thus, these data strongly suggest that the anti-MRSA activity of E. bicyclis may be mediated by phlorotannins such as dieckol.

        향미 개선 저식염 우렁쉥이(Halocynthia roretzi) 젓갈의 휘발성 향기성분

        Volatile compounds in fermented ascidians Halocynthia roretzi were analyzed to identify key flavor compoundsusing SPME/GC/MSD (solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography/mass selective detector) after 60 days offermentation at 5°C. The control was chopped ascidians subject to anti-browning and 4% salt treatment. product Awas made from product C by adding an alcohol extract of red peppers and onion peel, 0.1% of glucose, and 0.55%of mixed amino acids (MAA; 0.05% Glu, 0.1% Pro, 0.3% Ala, and 0.1% Gly). After blanching and anti-browningtreatment of chopped ascidians, Product B1 was made by adding 3% anchovy sauce and 6% sorbitol. Product B2 wasmade by adding 0.1% glucose and 0.55% MAA to Product B1. In total, 78 compounds were identified, including 31alcohols, 15 aldehydes, and 10 ketones. The alcohols included 12 compounds from the C8-C10 series with floral andfruit odors, including octanol, 3-methyloctanol, 2,6-dimethyl-1-heptanol, (E)-5-octen-1-ol, 6-methyloctanol, (E)-3-octen-1-ol, (E)-3-decen-1-ol, (Z)-1,5-octadien-3-ol, and nonanol. These were detected in high amounts in ascidiansand all fermented products. Aldehydes (octanal, (E)-2-octenal, 2,4-heptadienal, and nonanal) and ketones (1-oten-3-one and 2-heptanone) with fatty and mushroom odors were detected as major compounds, whereas nine ethyl esterswere detected only in product A.

        Dietary Intervention with Quercetin Attenuates Diesel Exhaust Particle-Instilled Pulmonary Inflammation and Behavioral Abnormalities in Mice

        Exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) is inevitable and closely linked with increased health hazards, causing pulmonary abnormalities by increasing inflammation, hypoxia, and so on. Moreover, long-term exposure to DEPs may trigger whole-body toxicity with behavioral alterations. Therefore, nutritional intervention with natural components may be desirable to prevent and/or ameliorate DEP-inducible pathophysiology in mammals. Quercetin has been demonstrated to reduce metabolic complications by possessing antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antimutagenic effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of quercetin on pulmonary inflammation and behavioral alteration in male C57BL/6 mice against DEP instillation. The experimental mice were separated into four treatment groups (n = 8 per group), which include: vehicle control, DEP instillation, dietary intervention with a low dose of quercetin (20 mg/kg) for 14 days with DEP instillation for 7 days, or dietary intervention with a high dose of quercetin (100 mg/kg) for 14 days with DEP instillation for 7 days. Compared with the DEP-instilled group, dietary intervention with quercetin significantly attenuated eosinophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid analysis, pulmonary cytokine, and hypoxic mRNA expressions regardless of quercetin concentrations. DEP instillation triggered hyperactivities in the experimental mice, while quercetin pretreatment successfully normalized DEP-inducible abnormalities regardless of the dosage. Therefore, dietary intervention with quercetin may be an applicable means to prevent DEP-triggered pulmonary and behavioral abnormalities.
