Background: Fasting during the preoperative period is known to be a risk of perioperative hypoglycemia. Also, the administration of fluids containing glucose often causes postoperative hyperglycemia. So, we investigated what is the ideal fluid which does not lead to hyperglycemia as well as hypoglycemia in fasted children. Methods: Eighty ASA physical status I and II pediatric patients (1−7 years) were randomly divided into the four groups; Group I,II, III, and IV with twenty patients of each group. Patients in Group I, II, III, and IV received lactated Ringer’s solution, 1 : 2 : 3 SD solution, 1 : 2 SD solution, and 1 : 3 SD solution, respectively during the perioperative period. Blood glucose levels were checked at pre-induction, 1 hr after induction and 1 hr, 4 hr, 8 hr after end of operation. NPO time and total amounts of fluids administered were measured. Results: There was no patient with preoperative hypoglycemia. There were no significant differences in the perioperative blood glucose level among the groups. There was no relationship between blood glucose level and fasting time or age. Conclusions: We conclude that all of the four fluids with different glucose concentrations in this study were appropriate to the fasted children.
Phonon spectra of clean and Ni-terminated diamond (111) surfaces: An ab-initio study

The phonon densities of states (ph-DOSs) of clean and Ni-terminated C(111) surfaces with 1 × 1 and 2 × 1 surface structures were investigated using ab-initio density functional perturbation theory. The ph-DOSs showed vibrational spectra associated with the surface structures of C(111) and Ni/C(111). Further analyses of various surface phonon modes were performed to identify vibrational features involving the surface atoms of C(111) and Ni/C(111). These features provide important information for experimentally verifying the formation of a diamond bulk-like structure at Ni/C(111), as suggested in a previous study.
인터랙티브 스토리 내에서 플레이어의 도덕적 결정에 대한 캐릭터 시점의 영향 연구

본 논문의 목적은 플레이어가 조작하는 캐릭터의 관점이 사용자의 도덕적인 판단에 미치는 영 향을 연구하는 것이다. 이를 위해 우리는 Unity3D 게임 엔진을 이용해 Castaway 라는 이름의 인 터랙티브 스토리를 설계하고 개발했다. Castaway의 주요 내용은 1884년 영국에서 실제로 발생했던 R v Dudley and Stephens(일명 미뇨넷호 사건)에 기반하고 있다. Castaway 인터랙티브 스토리에 서, 플레이어는 가해자의 입장과 피해자의 입장 중 하나를 선택하여 해당 캐릭터의 시점으로 스토 리를 진행할 수 있다. 플레이어의 캐릭터에 대한 공감도가, 캐릭터에 대한 도덕적 판단에 영향을 주 었는지를 알기 위해 우리는 소규모 (n=10) 파일럿 스터디를 설계하고 진행하였다. 연구 결과는 서 로 다른 캐릭터 시점이 플레이어의 캐릭터 공감도 및 도덕적 판단에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 시사했 다. 향후 보다 많은 참가자들을 모집해 주 실험을 진행할 예정에 있다. This paper aims to study whether the perspective of the character controlled by a player can affect the player on her moral decision. To this end we designed and developed Castaway, an interactive story using Unity3D game engine. The main story plot of Castaway is based on the trial ‘R v Dudley and Stephens (also known as mignonette 1884) which occurred at 1884 in U.K. In Castaway, the player can choose either the accused or the victim, and then play the interactive story with the perspective of the chosen character. To investigate the relationship between the player’s empathy to the player character and player’s moral decision, we conducted a small-scale (n=10) pilot study. Results of the pilot study have shown that different perspectives can influence the player on her empathy to player character and her moral decision. In near future we plan to conduct a main study with more participants.

In the previous study, we isolated Bacillus coagulans IDCC 1201 from green malt and found that it was safe for use as a probiotic, based on phenotypic and genomic analysis. In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity using the cell-free lysate of this strain since the two properties can be its additional advantages as a probiotic. The following results were obtained: 1) In the RAW 264.7 (a mouse macrophage cell line) treated with lipopolysaccharide, the lysate of this strain inhibited the decrease of cell viability, the increased production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and the increased expressions of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) (a NO producer), inducible cyclooxygenase-2 (a PGE2 producer) and proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6. 2) The lysate also inhibited the growth of five pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. These two properties obtained provide B. coagulans IDCC 1201 with merits for a probiotic that can be of help particularly to the bowel in the inflammatory condition. Thus, it is thought to be worth developing this strain as a health supplement for this purpose.
