        The Relationship between Metabolic Syndrome and Pulmonary Function

        Background: Impaired lung function is associated with mortality rate from cardiovascular and all other death causes. There were previous studies on the relationship between lung function impairment and metabolic syndrome, but they are insuffi cient. This study was conducted on Koreans to analyze each component of metabolic syndrome as well as its variability between sexes. Methods: 1,370 subjects underwent a health examination at the Eulji General Hospital Health Center. We examined the association between lung function measurement (forced expiratory volume for 1 second [FEV1], forced vital capacity [FVC], FEV1/FVC) and metabolic syndrome using Student t-test, Pearson partial correlation coeffi cient, and analysis of covariance for statistical analysis, and we adopted metabolic syndrome defi ned by American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Asia. Results: Men with metabolic syndrome tended to experience lung function impairment. In terms of association to each metabolic syndrome component, metabolic syndrome components in men were associated with pulmonary function impairment and the more metabolic syndrome diagnostic criteria factors the patients had, the more severe their pulmonary function tended to decline. In women, waist circumference, triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were associated with pulmonary function change. Conclusion: In men, all metabolic syndrome components were associated with pulmonary function impairment, and the more metabolic syndrome components men had, the more severe their pulmonary functions decline. In women,components of metabolic syndrome were not associated with pulmonary function impairment.

        금강호의 항생제 내성세균의 분포 및 동정

        This study was conducted to evaluate the annual population variation and identification of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the lower artificial Lake Geumgang from January to December, 2002. Samples were taken from the surface waters at 3 stations near the estuarine barrage. The results were as follows; the population densities of heterotrophic bacteria varied from 4.1 ± 1.0 × 102 to 6.7 ± 1.1 × 103 cfu ml-1 during the investigation periods. The population densities of antibiotic-resistant bacteria ranged from 1.5 ± 0.7 × 10 to 4.3 ± 0.3 × 103 cfu ml-1 for ampicillin; from 0 to 6.4 ± 0.4 × 102 cfu ml-1 for chloramphenicol; from 0 to 2.8 ± 0.3 × 103 cfu ml-1 for gentamicin; from 0 to 4.5 ± 1.0 × 103 cfu ml-1 for kanamycin; and from 1.0 ± 0.4 × 10 to 2.3 ± 0.5 × 103 cfu ml-1 for streptomycin, respectively. Of the sixty isolates, 90% were Gram negative. Dominant genera by 16S rDNA analysis were identified Aeromonas spp. (14 strains), Bacillus spp. (6strains), Enterobacter spp. (4 strains), and Stenotrophomonas spp. (6 strains). These strains were clustered into 12 groups based on relatedness by average linkage method. Of the 60 isolates, 85% had the resistance to ampicilin and 32% were shown resistance to more than 2 kinds of antibiotics. 2002년 1월부터 12월까지 매월 전북 군산시 인근에 위치한 금강호를 대상으로 항생제 내성균의 월별 분포변화와 조사기간 중 분리된 균주를 동정하였다. 종속영양세균의 연중 분포는 4.1 ± 1.0 × 102 ~ 6.7 ± 1.1× 103 cfu mL-1의 범주에서 변화하였다. 항생제 내성균의 년중 분포는 ampicillin 내성균의 경우, 1.5 ± 0.7 × 10 ~ 4.3 ± 0.3 × 103 cfu mL-1, chloramphenicol 내성균의 경우, 0 ~ 6.4 ± 0.4 × 102 cfu mL-1, gentamicin 내성균 의 경우, 0 ~ 2.8 ± 0.3 × 103 cfu mL-1, kanamycin 내성균의 경우, 0 ~ 4.5 ± 1.0 × 103 cfu mL-1, 그리고 streptomycin 내성균은 1.0±0.4×10~2.3±0.5×103 cfu mL-1의 범주에서 변화하였다. 조사된 항생제 내성균들 중 ampicllin 내성균이 모든 정점에서 가장 높은 균체수를 나타냈다. 조사기간 중 60균주의 항생제 내성균이 분리되었으며, 그 중 그람양성 세균은 6균주, 그람음성세균은 54균주를 차지하였다. 항생제 내성균으로 분리된 균주는 Pseudomonas 속, Aeromonas 속, 그리고 Bacillus 속과 Stenotrophomonas 속 등이 우점으로 나타났으며, 이외에도Enterobacter 속, Sphingobium 속, Variovorax 속, 그리고 Serratia 속, Acinetobacter 속, Mycoplana 속, Psychrobacter 속과 Xanthomonas 속 등이 포함되었다. 동정된 균들은 ampicillin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, gentamicin 순으로 높은 내성을 나타났다.

        AGS 인체 위암세포를 이용한 서리태 콩알 메주의in Vitro 항암효과

        Mejus were prepared with different black soybeans (BS) of var. Seoritae and Seomoctae. To check the anticancer effects of BS Mejus (BSM), MTT assay was performed in AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells. We found that the Seoritae and Seoritae-BSM significantly inhibited the growth of the AGS cells. The Seoritae-BS was separated into kernel and coat, and then these were cooked and fermented with the Asp. oryzae. The methanol extract of these samples was effectively inhibited the growth of the AGS cells. Especially black colored coat of Seoritae showed the highest effect on the AGS cells. This anticancer activity was diminished by cooking process. However, the effect was dramatically recovered by fermentation step.         교양교육을 통한 한국 전통발효식품(장류)의 우수성에 대한 인식고취

        With economic growth and advances in science and technology, various processed and convenient foods have brought about changes in dietary culture. In the era of Well-being and LOHAS, the excellence of traditional fermented foods in Korea is recognized as a functional food worldwide. Paste, a representative traditional fermented food in Korea, is a physiologically active substance along with anticancer action by substances produced by the involvement of various microorganisms during the manufacturing and fermentation process. Through liberal arts education, it recognizes that Korean traditional fermented foods are excellent nutritional and functional ingredients, delivers the value and excellence of Korean traditional foods through the curriculum, delivers correct information on traditional fermented foods, healthy dietary habits, and healthy dietary consumption culture. In the rapid change of the times and the development of the food industry, we hope that the liberal arts curriculum will be an important opportunity for traditional fermented foods in Korea to expand and disseminate healthy dietary culture. 경제적 성장과 과학기술의 발전으로 다양한 가공식품과 편의식품이 식생활 문화의 변화를 가져왔다. Well-being, LOHAS 시대에 우리나라 전통발효식품의 우수성은 세계적으로 기능성식품으로의 인정을 받고 있다. 대표적인 우리나라 전통 발효식품인 장류는 제조 및 발효과정 중 다양한 미생물의 관여로 생성되는 물질이 항암작용과 함께 생리활성물질로 작용하고 있다. 교양교육을 통해 우리나라 전통발효식품이 영양학적. 기능성물질로도 우수한 식품임을 인지시키고 교육과정을 통한 한국 전통음식의 가치 및 우수성 전달, 전통발효식품에 대한 올바른 정보전달, 건전한 식생활 습관, 건강한 식생활 소비문화를 창출하도록 한다. 시대의 급속한 변천과 식품산업의 발달에서 우리나라 전통 발효식품이 건강한 식생활문화를 확대 보급하는데 있어서 교양교육 과정이 중요한 기회가 되길 기대한다.

        금강 하구둑 인근에서 미생물군집의 특성

        The monthly variations of physico-chemical and microbiological water quality were investigate in the artificial Lake Geumgang near estuary barrage. Sixty heterotrophic bacteria were isolated and identified by amplification and sequencing of 16S rDNA. Water temperature, pH, and inorganic nutrients(NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, PO4-P) were measured. Concentrations of DO, BOD, and inorganic nutrients were lower than in the middle-stream of Geum river. The population densities of heterotrophic bacteria and total coliforms varied from 4.1 ± 1.0 × 102 to 6.7 ± 1.1 × 103 cfu ml-1, and 0 to 2.3 ± 0.6 × 102 cfu ml-1, respectively. Among the measured numbers of physiological groups of bacteria, cellulolytic bacteria showed higher population densities than those of other physiological groups. Bacterial community structure was analysed based on 16S rDNA partial sequencing. Among 60 isolates, dominant genus was seudomonas (20 strains).
