조형예술에서 살펴본 매듭의 다층적 역할 분석

The present work is an analysis of the role of knot examined in formative art with classification of its three categories. The purpose of this paper is to expand the scope of study limited to traditional knot or decorative use by examining the morphological, spatial, and ideological aspects of formative art through the diachronic and synchronic consideration of knot. Knot exists in the proximity of our everyday life. Knot is used without any special attention, but the immaculate history of humanity can be detected in the meaning and symbol that are inherent in the form of knot, the tying act, and the process of undoing it. Knot which has wrought a huge driving force in the advancement of human civilization is the oldest technology of combination in history and is still being used nowadays in an array of fields. Knot in history conveys various uses and meanings of layers including transportation, vessel, construction, knitting, design, letter, spell, etc. according to its time and place. Also, the formative elements of dots, lines, and sides are generated in the process of combining the tied knot, assuming a three-dimensional shape in and of itself. Such knot is mainly executed in fabric. Fabric creates fissure to the concept of traditional sculpt in the 1960s and builds a new definition for material never before seen. Fabric, which had proposed the discourse of the age and fore-fronted the development of new artistic style, added the symbolism and formativeness inherent in knot and settled in as a representative medium of expression for artists. Moreover, whether it is to display a symbolism or establish a form appropriate for the purpose of an artist, knot is still broadening its sphere of role up to this day. The role of knots in repetitive behaviors additionally found in this paper will be analyzed in further study. Expecting the role of knot analyzed in the selected artists’ work to apply as precedent research for the emergence of new visual arts, it is worthwhile to mention, lastly, that the significance of this study lies in examining the intrinsic value of fundamental technology. 본고는 조형예술에서 살펴본 매듭의 역할을 세 가지 범주로 나누어 분석한 것이다. 매듭의 통시적·공시적 고찰을 통해 조형예술의 형태적, 공간적, 관념적 측면을 동시에 살펴봄으로써 전통 매듭 혹은 장식적 용도로 국한된 연구의 영역을 확장하는 것에 연구의 목적이 있다. 매듭은 우리의 일상에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 존재이다. 별다른 주의 없이 매듭을 사용하고 있지만 매듭의 형태, 묶는 행위, 그리고 매듭을 풀어내는 과정 속에 내재한 의미와 상징에서 인류의 무구한 역사를 확인할 수 있다. 인류 문명의 발전에 큰 원동력으로 작용한 매듭은 역사적으로 가장 오래된 결합의 기술로서 오늘날까지 다양한 영역에서 사용되고 있다. 역사 속에서 매듭은 시대와 장소에 따라 운반, 선박, 건설, 편물, 의장, 문자, 주술 등과 같은 다양한 층위의 용도와 의미들을 나타낸다. 또한, 섬유를 매듭짓는 것만으로 삼차원의 형태가 나타나며, 결합하는 과정에서는 점, 선, 면들의 조형 요소들이 생성되기도 한다. 특히, 1960년대에 매듭의 주요 대상인 섬유가 급진적인 예술 형태를 대표하는 재료가 되면서 매듭은 예술가들의 최우선 표현 수단으로 자리하게 되었다. 시대의 담론을 제시하게 된 매듭은 예술가의 상징적 의미를 전달하거나, 형태 구축을 위한 역할을 수행하며 오늘날까지 그 영역을 확장하고 있는 모습이다. 그 외, 이 논문을 연구하는 과정에서 추가적으로 발견한 반복의 행위를 위한 매듭의 역할은 후속 연구에서 고찰해 보겠다. 선별한 조형작품에서 분석한 매듭의 역할이 새로운 시각예술의 출현을 위한 선행 연구로서 자리하길 바라며, 마지막으로 근원적인 기술의 고유한 가치를 살펴보는 것에 이 연구의 의의를 두고자 한다.

한지에 내재한 감성과 조형성 연구

Hanji is a unique cultural heritage of Korea which can draw people’s attention to the aesthetic sense and eco-friendly. So, this study, based on the excellence of Hanji, considers the inherent sensibility and its formativeness of Hanji through the diachronic and synchronic view. The purpose of the study is to search the usefulness of Hanji through multilateral views while the process to find the meanings and symbols which can be expressed by Hanji as an expressive material in formative arts. The study analyzes in terms of the use of Hanji in the history of traditional Hanji handicraft and its sensitivity when it is used as the material of artistic expression because national emotion is naturally created by various forms and tastes which were handed down by life and heritage of ancestors. Furthermore, the study searches inherent symbols and formativeness of Hanji through the analysis of the artist’s notes and interviews about artists who use Hanji for means of artistic expressions. It was confirmed that Hanji is not only the material which represents unique Korean emotions but also the material for artistic expression which connotes multilayered concepts from the symbol of nature to society, culture, and philosophy. Moreover, Hanji, which is soft property, has various formative potentials which can extend from plane to solid, and space through flexible transformation. Awareness of Hanji, which tends to be old, will be changed by philosophy and formativeness of unique Korean emotion and artists’ philosophy. Finally, Hanji is the material which can express various emotions and their formativeness from the unique existence to property reaction. The unique inherent visual arts will be created after understanding how senses and emotions of Hanji, which were induced by the production process, have an influence on viewers, and then trying the formative approach. Lastly, it is to be wished that after Hanji is used the material for artistic expression, which satisfies people’s high standard of aesthetic sense, its unique Korean sensibility and formativeness will spread all around the world. 한지는 우리의 높아진 미의식과 친환경(eco-freindly)에 대한 시대의 관심에 부응할 수 있는 한국 고유의 문화유산이다. 이에 본고에서는 한지의 우수성을 바탕으로 통시적·공시적 관점을 통해 한지에 내재한 감성과 조형성을 고찰하고자 한다. 조형예술에서 표현의 재료로서 한지만이 나타낼 수 있는 의미와 상징을 찾는 과정에서 다각적인 관점으로 한지의 유용함을 살펴보는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 이를위해 한 민족의 정서는 그 조상들의 생활과 유물에서 전해지는 다양한 양식과 멋에서 자연스럽게 생성되기 때문에 전통 한지 공예품 역사 속에서 한지의 쓰임새와 그것이 예술표현재료로 활용되었을 때전달할 수 있는 감성을 분석한다. 다음으로 예술표현의 수단으로 한지를 사용하고 있는 예술가들의 작가 노트 및 인터뷰를 분석하여 한지에 내재한 상징과 조형성을 살펴본다. 이 연구를 통해 한지는 한국고유의 감성을 대변하는 재료이자 자연의 상징에서부터 사회, 문화, 철학 등 다층적 개념을 내포하는예술표현재료임을 확인할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 부드러운 물성으로 인해 평면에서부터 입체, 공간으로까지 확장할 수 있는 가능성을 지니고 있었다. 한지 특유의 한국적 감성과 예술가의 철학과 조형성의 결합으로 옛것이라는 한지의 인식 변화를 경험할 것이다. 결론적으로 한지는 그 고유의 존재성에서부터 물성으로서의 반응까지 다양한 감성과 조형성을 나타낼 수 있는 재료라 할 수 있다. 한지가 유발할 수 있는 감각과 감성이 관람자에게 어떠한 영향력을 미치는지를 파악한 후 조형적인 접근을 시도한다면 독특한 감성이 내재한 시각 예술이 창작될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 마지막으로 한지가 문화수출의 시대에 높아진 미의식을 충족할 수 있는 예술표현의 재료로 활용되어 한국 특유의 감성과 조형성을 전 세계에 전달할 수 있길 바라본다.

현대 섬유예술의 지형 분석

This study is an analysis of present state of fiber art from a multi-faceted perspective the dichotomous view involving tradition and modernity, crafts and art, and females and males in contemporary formative arts. The reason is that this study identified the possibility of expanding fiber art that contributed to the advancement of human civilization into an area of art on the special level that can contain cultural, historical, philosophical, and artistic perspectives. The method of research first considers the concept of fibers established historically in formative arts for the purpose of setting the standard of classifying modern fiber art. Next, the development process of fiber art based on the concept of fiber is analyzed. Lastly, this study selects modern fiber arts released since the 2000s based on the aforementioned concept of fiber and trend of fiber arts in order to examine the status of modern fiber arts. The results derived from the analysis are as follows. First, the phenomenon of conveying the individual thoughts and consciousness of the subject of the artists was greater than the original role and value conveyance that could be witnessed in the existing fiber arts. Second, the physical properties of fibers were actively used and became a tool of expressing the appearance of creative works, instead of remaining as the philosophical and ideological concepts inherent in fiber materials. Third, it could be confirmed that fiber arts, which was deemed as an exclusive sphere for women, appeared in the art world of men. In sum, fibers no longer exist as materials for the artistic expression used due to dichotomous classification but exist as a medium that conveys the landscape of the times and individual philosophy and ideology of artists. Fiber art, which has been established as an art system of a special sphere with multi-faceted perspectives, is expected to expand into an independent area of art that enables an experience of new sensations by advancing its unique properties and sensibility inherent in the material in the visual arts of the future. 이 논문은 현대 조형예술에서 전통과 현대, 공예와 예술, 여성과 남성과 같은 이분법적 사고에서 벗어나 다층적인 관점에서 섬유예술의 현재를 분석한 것이다. 인류 문명의 발전에 기여한 섬유예술에서 문화적·역사적·철학적·예술적 관점을 담을 수 있는 특수한 층위의 예술 영역으로서의 확장 가능성을 파악했기 때문이다. 연구의 방법은 먼저, 현대 섬유예술품을 분류하는 기준 마련을 위해 역사적으로 조형예술에서 설정된 섬유의 개념을 고찰한다. 그 다음, 섬유의 개념을 바탕으로 한 섬유예술의 전개 과정을 분석한다. 마지막으로 전술한 섬유의 개념과 섬유예술의 흐름에 기반한 2000년대 이후 발표된현대 섬유예술품들을 선정하여 현대 섬유예술의 지형을 고찰한다. 이 분석으로 다음과 같은 결과를 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 기존 섬유예술에서 살펴볼 수 있었던 본연의 역할 및 가치 전달보다 예술가 개인의 사유와 주제의식을 전달하는 모습이었다. 둘째, 섬유 재료에 내재한 철학적· 관념적 개념이 아닌섬유의 물리적 특성을 적극 활용하여 창작물의 외형을 표현하는 수단으로 자리하고 있었다. 셋째, 최근까지도 여성의 전유물로 치부되었던 섬유예술이 남성의 예술 세계에 등장한 것을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 종합하면, 현대 조형예술에서 섬유는 더 이상 이분법적 분류로 인해 사용되던 예술표현의 재료가 아닌, 시대의 풍경과 예술가 개인의 철학 및 이념을 전달하는 매개체로서 존재하는 것이다. 다층적인 관점을담으며 특수한 층위의 예술체계로 자리한 섬유예술이 앞으로의 시각 예술에서 재료에 내재한 특유의물성과 감성을 앞세워 새로운 감각을 경험하게 하는 독자적인 예술의 영역으로 확장하길 기대한다.

공공미술의 관점에서 본 현대 섬유예술의 동향 분석

본 논문은 현대 섬유예술의 동향을 새로운 관점으로 살펴보기 위해 공공미술과 연계하여 분석한 것이다. 이 분석으로 섬유예술의 개념과 기능을 현대적 관점으로 살펴보는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 연구의 방법은 첫째, 공공미술과 섬유예술의 범주와 개념을 각각 논의한다. 특히, 1960년대 이후 포스트모더니즘의 영향 아래 전개된 미술 양식과 연관하여 두 예술체계의 상보적 관계를 분석해 본다. 둘째, 이론적 내용을 기반으로 2000년대 이후 설치된 공공 섬유 조형물을 현대 섬유예술의 동향 분석을 위한 사례로 제시하여 고찰한다. 사례 작품의 1차 선정 기준은 섬유를 표현 재료로 2000년도 이후에 제작되어 세계 명소에 설치된 현대미술품으로 한정한다. 수집한 1차 사례에서 세 가지 유형으로 공공 섬유 조형물을 분류할 수 있었고, 여기에서 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 먼저, 실내 공간에서 벗어나 도시 환경에 설치된 공공 조형물은 섬유의 유연하고 부드러운 물성에 기반하여 물리적으로 작품의 규모와 형태가 확장하고 있었다. 다음으로 온도와 습도, 눈과 비 등과 같은 환경적 요인에 취약해 내부에서만 감상할 수 있었던 섬유예술이 고도로 발전한 산업사회에서 생산된 섬유 매체의 사용으로 인해 외부 공간에까지 전시할 수 있게 되었다. 셋째, 섬유가 지닌 문화적·역사적 관점을 활용하여 예술가 개인의 의도와 목적이 아닌, 공공성을 최우선으로 구현하는 모습을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이는 섬유예술의 의미와 상징의 규모가 예술가 개인에서 사회 전체를 위한 것으로 확장됨을 의미한다. 개별적으로 연구되던 두 예술체계를 꿸 수 있었던 것에 연구의 의의를 두며 이 논문을 기초로, 공공미술뿐만 아니라 다양한 관점으로 해석한 섬유예술을 통해 인류의 삶에 이바지하는 또 다른 확장적 가치가 발견되길 기대한다.

자넷 에힐만의 기류 조각에 나타난 융합공예적 특성 연구

이 논문은 첨단 디지털 시대에 자넷 에힐만(Janet Echelman)의 기류 조각에 나타난 융합공예의 확장적 가치를 분석한 것이다. 아날로그 감성이 가득한 공예가 첨단 디지털 기술과의 융합으로 나타나는 특징과 이것이 미치는 사회적 영향력을 살펴보는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 시대의 화두인 첨단 디지털 기술과 융합한 공예는 다양한 사회적 역할 제안과 미학적 담론들을 제시하며 공예의 부흥기를 이끌고 있다. 첨단 과학이 제공한 인류의 감성 상실 현상이 가증(加增)된 현시대에, 여러 분야와의 다양한 융합의 시도를 통해 우리의 감성을 치유하고 견고했던 전통성의 경계를 무너뜨리며 공예의 대중화·보편화에 기여했기 때문이다. 이와 연관하여 미국의 기류 조각가 자넷 에힐만이 시도한 전통공예 기법과 첨단 디지털 기술의 융합 과정을 분석해 보고자 한다. 스튜디오 에힐만에서 이루어지는 전통성과 혁신성의 융합 그리고 이 과정에서 요구되는 협업의 중요성을 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다. 첨단 디지털 기술의 메커니즘(Mechanism)적인 효율성을 적극 활용하여 창작자의 예술 철학을 전통공예의 기법으로 구현한 새로운 시각 예술의 형태를 살펴본 것에 연구의 의의를 두고자 한다. 마지막으로 이 논문이 창작자들에게 융합공예를 통해 사회에 기여할 수 있는 역할을 살펴봄에 있어 포괄적인 개관(槪觀)이 되길 바라본다. This study analyzes the expansive values of convergence craft in the stream sculptures of Janet Echelman in the advanced digital generation. The main objective is to emphasize social impacts brought by the convergence of analog craftswork and digital technology. The convergence of sophisticated digital technology and craftswork has become a generational controversy and suggests various social roles and artistic debates, leading to its period of revival. In the current era where people’s emotional lack has been increased due to science, such convergence succeeded to break between the lines of tradition which healed human’s emotions and led to its popularization and generalization. In this connection, this study analyzes the process of convergence between traditional craft techniques and advanced digital technologies that America’s stream sculptor Janet Echelman tried. This is expected to discover new traits of convergence craft along with the importance of collaboration between the past and the future, tradition and innovation, which happened in Studio Echelman. The purpose of this study is to investigate the form of new visual art which embodies the artistic philosophy of the creator as a technique of traditional craft by making full use of the mechanism efficiency of advanced digital technology. Finally, it hopes to become a comprehensive overview of how creators can contribute to society through convergence craft.
