Vol.12 No.-

As a theological response to revolutionary breakthroughs of biotechnology, which have unprecedented socio-ethical ramifications, this article attempts to offer a comprehensive framework for this fundamental issue at stake: How to view life and its sanctity, particularly in relation with society? This task involves a theological appropriation of Humbert Maturana and Francisco Varela's biological systems theory and Niklas Luhmann's sociological systems theory. First, I articulate three broad types of interpreting life: the (1) micro-scientific, (2) macros-scientific, and (3) mystical/religious views. Second, Maturana and Varela's biological systems theory is religiously recodified to set forth a comprehensive view that integrates the three views: the life system is a system that autopoietically processes life-communication in terms of diverse life codes. In this conception, the notion of “life codes,” which denotes the coupling of “spiritual codes” and “biological codes,” renders possible a creative fusion of the scientific and religious views. Consistently, God is conceptualized in terms of a life system sui generis that autopoietically processes life-communication in terms of the perfect life code, which is the Holy Spirit. It is also suggested that the spiritual codes mediate life-communication between God and creaturely life systems. Third, Luhmann's sociological systems theory is used to propose that society (which is “the communicative system”) emerged through the evolutionary processes ultimately for the sake of life's transcendent “self-observation” with respect to its complex environment. Also, it is argued that the thorny issue concerning the sanctity of life requires a comprehensive view of life, which harmonizes the scientific and religious views, and that the issue should be carefully distinguished from the issue concerning the dignity of humanity. Finally, we note that it is only through sufficient exchanges of divergent views of life, which are “observations” of diverse social systems (including the religious systems), that balanced social value judgments on the “virtual rights” of life can be attained.

Vol.9 No.-

The rise of the postmodern/information age, as well as the inter/ multi-disciplinary paradigm, stimulates new thinking about the perennial issue concerning the relation of faith and learning, which is of paramount importance for all Christian universities. This article creatively appropriates Niklas Luhmann``s systems theory and Hans-Georg Gadamer``s hermeneutics to set forth a view of the academic disciplines as the interpretive discourse systems. It also conceptualizes theology as an interpretive discourse system operative under the horizon/code of faith in divine revelation. This conceptualization, consonant with the inter/multi-disciplinary paradigm, enables us to envision afresh the relation of theology and nontheological disciplines in terms of seeking the fusion of horizons via interpenetrations between them. Finally, H. Richard Niebuhr``s celebrated typology with regard to the relation of Christ and culture is creatively appropriated to illuminate variegated positions, including the one proposed here, with regard to that of faith and learning.

Vol.50 No.1

This study reinterprets the soteriology of Hans Urs von Balthasar's Theo-Drama in constructive dialogue with literary discourse of tragedy focusing on the notion of harmatia. While the term is used in the New Testament to denote sin, it signifies tragic error/flaw in judgment of a hero in tragedy. We excavate its complicated semantic usages deployed in Greek and Shakespeare's tragedies in order to explore how it could illuminate the entire stages of theo-drama: creation, the fall, and the Christ event, (incarnation, death, and resurrection), and eschatology. In doing so, this notion is also used as a lens to reexamine the relationship of the two trinitarian Persons (Father/Son) via the mediation of the third Person (Spirit). The hamartia of the Trinity is conceived not as fatal flaws as in the case of tragic heroes but as fatal love demanded for redeeming tragic human existence in the drama of salvation. The thrust of our argument is that this trinitarian hamartia compelled by fatal love signifies the pathos of the Trinity disclosed in the drama of salvation, in which tragic human existence is overcome by the tragic death of Christ. Now in this post-Christ era the tragedy of human existence is an already-overcome tragedy, but it is still a yet-to-be-overcome tragedy in the eschatological hope of catharsis, as his resurrection ushered in the phase of tragi-comedy in the drama of salvation. Teasing through the rich semantic nuances of hamartia in tragedy, this study, we hope, could open up new fertile possibilities of rethinking the entire loci of constructive theology: soteriology, Christology, the Trinity, and eschatology, among others. We also hope that this work, in its exploration of constructive dialogue between theology and tragic literature/drama, could contribute to enriching the resources of theology and broadening its horizon.

Justice and Interpretation for Christian Praxis - Georgia Warnke's Justice Hermeneutics in Dialogue with Francis Schüssler Fiorenza's Reconstructive Hermeneutics -

Vol.0 No.29

Diverse issues pertinent to justice are incessantly disturbing contemporary society, provoking appropriate responses and, certainly, Christian ones, as well. In this context, this paper tries to critically investigate Georgia Warnke's Justice and Interpretation to see how her contentions can contribute to Christian praxis and theology, and in what ways they are limited. Warnke is among the scholars who have brought hermeneutics into the discourse of justice, conceiving justice as something that emerges through the participation of every member of the community. Warnke's understanding of justice is advantageous as it overcomes the Kantian understanding of justice. However, it is disadvantageous in overlooking the pragmatic dimension of decision making. We contend that this point of Warnke is problematic, particularly for theology that is indispensably related to praxis. In order to supplement Warnke's justice hermeneutics, this paper invites Francis Schüssler Fiorenza's reconstructive hermeneutical theology. While recognizing the importance of hermeneutics, Fiorenza tries to overcome its limitations, suggesting that we should consider the background theory of the interpreter and the text. Background theory is beneficial as it would enable the interpreter to understand both the text and himself/herself with a more critical stance. Moreover, he emphasizes three essential factors required to do hermeneutics - solidarity, community, and integrity - so that theology could place more weight on decision making toward justice. In short, this paper aims to contribute to nurturing these two points: (1) the importance of accommodating as many voices as possible in the course of decision making, and (2) the importance of decision making within time constraints for practical application in concrete situations. By this way, theology could be more concretely connected with contemporary praxis concerning the issues of justice

Vol.32 No.5

Most large rotating facilities are periodically prevented and repaired regardless of the health condition of the facility, and unnecessary maintenance may cause facility operation suspension and economic loss. To overcome this, research is currently underway to develop an Asset Health Index (AHI) for large rotating facilities to implement condition-based maintenance. The AHI can be used to intuitively grasp the status of surveillance targets by calculating scores, and to implement this, it is necessary to set an appropriate weighting factor for each index. This study conducted weight optimization through Genetic Algorithm (GA) to improve the reliability and function of the AHI. Based on the optimized results, AHI score calculation is expected to increase the intuitiveness of state monitoring.
