A broad spectrum of antibiotic action was studied with Centipedin purified from centipede Scolopendra subspinipes multilans L. Koch aganist gram-positive, gram-negative bacteria and fungi. The minimal inhibitory concentrations(MICs) were determined in liquid medium. The significant antibiotic activity was obtained aganist gram-negative Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 8308 responsible for causing infection at lung and intestine. The MIC value against Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 8308 was $2{\mu}g/ml$, and this Centipedin was active against Proteus vulgaris NRRL B-123. In addition, it has been shown that Centipedin blocks procaryotic RNA transcription and a little of DNA replication system in vitro. Centipedin did not exhibit any significant cytotoxicity against animal cells such as human blood leukemia (HL-60) and mouse B lymphocyte myeloma cell.
Vol.16 No.1
This study focuses on a new communication project within the Korean press in order to tackle the long-lasting issue of conflict between the conservative and progressive parties in Korea. In other words, it specifically analyzes a joint communication project between the conservative Joongang Ilbo and the progressive Hankyoreh. The joint project compares the arguments and viewpoints of an editorial in each newspaper on an identical topic, the results of which are summarized in one editorial presented in both newspapers on the same date—this study analyzes the contents and significance of this project. The purpose, design and assessment of this project, along with the 175 actual editorials published from 05/21/13 to 10/25/16, were analyzed. The results are as follows: First, the purpose of this project was to create an opportunity of communication between conservative and progressive media in Korea, an issue that has been extremely difficult to resolve for a long period. To that end, the project seeks to inform readers about differences between the viewpoints of Joongang Ilbo and Hankyoreh, each being prominent newspapers among the Korean conservative and progressive media, respectively, on the same topic. Second, topics of the analyzed editorials consisted of politics (72 editorials, 41.1%), society (57 editorials, 32.6%), international issues (22 editorials, 12.6%), economics (22 editorials, 12.6 %), and culture (2 editorials, 1.1%). A total of 7 experts participated in this communication project as analysts for the last 38 months—the group consisted of 6 high school teachers, of which 4 taught the Korean language and 2 taught philosophy, and 1 expert was a professor specializing in media criticism. Third, during the early stages of the project, there were not only positive reviews of expectation and encouragement, but also negative assessments claiming that the project was more or less an essay textbook, unable to fulfill its intended role as a window for communication between two opposing political camps. However, after 38 months of progress, recent reviews were found to be mostly positive.
