The irregularities in the guideways used in the Maglev transportation system that result from surface roughness and deflection of guideway have strong effects on the dynamic characteristics of Maglev vehicles, because the electromagnetic suspension of Maglev vehicles strongly interacts with the guideway. For this reason, a numerical prediction of air gap responses to these irregularities is desirable to improve aspects of running performance, such as stability and passenger comfort, while minimizing aesthetic impact and construction cost. This paper presents a procedure to predict the air gap response which is a criteria for stability, and investigates the responses with the goal of attaining higher travel speeds in the urban Maglev vehicle UTM-01 utilizing electromagnetic suspension.

An ammonia gas sensor with high sensitivity using thick-film technology were fabricated and examined. The material for sensing the ammonia gas was the mixture of oxide semiconductor, FeO_x-WO₃-SnO₂. The sensor exhibits resistance increase upon exposure to low concentration of ammonia gas. The resistance of the sensor is decreased, on the other hand, for exposure to reducing gases such as ethyl alcohol, methane, propane and carbon monoxide. A novel method for detecting ammonia gas quite selectively utilizing a sensor array consisting of an ammonia gas sensor and a compensation element were proposed and developed. The compensation element is a Pt-doped WO₃-SnO₂ gas sensor which shows opposite direction of resistance change in comparison with that of the ammonia gas sensor upon exposure to ammonia gas. Excellent selectivity has been achieved using the sensor array having two sensing elements.

The electromagnet in Maglev vehicles controls the voltage in its winding to maintain the air gap, a clearance between the electromagnet and guideway, within an allowable deviation, with strongly interacting with the flexible guideway. Thus, the vibration characteristics of guideway plays important role in dynamics of Maglev vehicles using electromagnet as an active suspension system. The effects of the guideway's vibrational characteristics on dynamics of the Maglev vehicle UTM-01 are analyzed. The coupled equations of motion of the vehicle/guideway with 3 DOFs are derived. Eigenvalues are calculated and frequency response analysis is also performed for a clear understanding of the dynamic characteristics due to guideway vibration characteristics. To verify the results, tests of the urban Mgalev vehicle UTM-02 are carried out. It is recommended that the natural frequency of the guideway be minimized and its damping ratio in the Maglev vehicle with a 5-states feedback control law as a levitation control law.

The thick films of oxide semiconductors such as WO₃, SnO₂ and ZnO for the NO₂ detection of sub-ppm range have been prepared and their characteristics were investigated. It is showed that the optimum operating temperatures of the sensors are 300℃ and 220∼260℃ for WO₃-based and SnO₂-based thick films, and ZnO-based thick films, respectively. Since the resistance of ZnO-based thick films are extremely high($gt;l0^6Ω), the signal to noise ratio was comparatively low. In order to determine the selectivity, the films are exposed to the interfering gases such as ozone, ammonia, methane and the mixture of carbon monoxide and propane. WO₃-ZnO(3 wt.%) and SnO₂-WO₃(3 wt.%) thick film sensors show high sensitivity, good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and the linearity of NO₂ concentration versus sensor resistance. The preliminary results clearly demonstrated that the sensor can be successfully applied for the detection of NO₂ in sub-ppm range.

This study was conducted to investigate the association of the occurrence of pediatric diseases with environmental, seasonal and atmospheric factors. The data were collected at 5 pediatric clinics in Seoul and the Department of Pediatrics of Yongin Severance Hospital from May 1986 to April 1987. The results were as follows: 1. Vacation periods had a great influence upon the occurrence of pediatric diseases. 2. The majority of pediatric diseases occurred mainly in spring and autumn, not in summer and winter. 3. The higher the average relative humidity was, the less diseases occurred : and the higher the maximum change of daily temperature, the more diseases occurred. 4. In summer, the pattern of diseases varied along with the environmental factors(eg., toilet).
