Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition leading to renal dysfunction and is closely related to increasedcardiovascular and mortality risk. CKD is an important public health issue, and recent genetic studies have verified common CKDsusceptibility variants. This research examines the interrelationship between candidate genes polymorphisms of interferon lambda(IFNL) induction, its signaling pathway, and CKD. Methods: Seventy-five patients with advanced CKD and 312 healthy subjects (as controls) participated in this research. A replicationset composed of 172 patients with advanced CKD and 365 controls was used for additional analysis. The genotype of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was determined by the Axiom Genome-Wide Human Assay and SNaPshot assay. Results: The SNP of IFNL3 was significantly associated with CKD in the codominant (p = 0.02) and dominant models (p = 0.02). Inaddition, the SNPs of IFNL2 were significantly associated with CKD in the dominant model (p = 0.03), and the SNP of interferon alphareceptor 2 (IFNAR2) was significantly associated with CKD in the log-additive model (p = 0.03). Concerning rs148543092, in theIFNL3 gene, a significant association was observed after pooling the original and replication sets. Conclusion: These results indicate that SNPs in the IFNL induction and signal pathway may be associated with CKD risk in the Korean population. Finally, our results also show that the IFNL3 gene variant may be associated with CKD risk.

A 47-year-old man developed chronic alcoholic liver cirrhosis and end-stage renal disease. He underwent blood-type-compatible liver transplantation with a graft from his daughter. After 8 months, sequential ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation was performed, with his brother as the donor (A to O). The patient had anti-A antibody titers (1:256). We performed pretransplant desensitization, including administration of rituximab, mycophenolate mofetil, tacrolimus, and prednisolone 2 weeks before the scheduled transplantation, and plasmaphresis (PP) and administered an intravenous immunoglobulin injection. The patient underwent PP before kidney transplantation until the anti-A antibody titer was <1:8. The patient achieved normal renal function within 4 posttransplantation days. Postoperative bleeding (diffuse hemorrhage) requiring additional blood transfusions and radiological intervention (drainage procedure) occurred 9 days after transplantation. The patient was discharged on day 20 of hospitalization. Nine months after the kidney transplantation, the recipient’s and donor’s liver and kidney functions were normal. ABOi renal transplantation after liver transplantation can be successfully performed in patients with high baseline anti-ABO antibody titers after preconditioning with rituximab and PP, and quadruple immunosuppressive therapy. However, caution is required regarding an increased risk of bleeding complications.

활성탄소섬유(ACF)는 화학 흡착제로 주로 사용되고 있으며, 현재 환경과 산업분야에서 대부분은 악취 제거에 효과적인 고성능 필터 및 캐패시터나 2차전지의 전극재료 소재로 응용되고 있다. 그 밖에 활성탄소와 같은 기능을 가지면서도 섬유삼 물리적 특성을 동시에 가지고 있어 가공하기가 쉬운 장점을 이용하여 각종 기능성 소재로 활용이 가능하여 최근에 활발한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 OXI PAN(Polyacronitrile)계 탄소섬유를 이용하여 물리적 활성화(수증기 활성화) 방법으로 활성탄소섬유(Activated Carbon Fibers)를 제조하고, 그 특성을 요오드 흡착량, 비표면적, 총 세공용적, 평균세공직경, 미세기공도 등으로 비교 분석하였다. 그리고 암모니아 가스를 이용하여 일정한 온도에서 흡착제와 피흡착물질을 장시간 접촉시켜, 남아 있는 물질과 흡착제에 흡착된 물질의 양과의 관계를 Freundlich 식과 Langmuir 식으로 등온흡착곡선을 각각 도식화하고, 이를 평가하였다.
