Objectives: This study surveyed doctors of Korean medicine on how they treat hypertension in their Korean clinical practices. Methods: An invitation to take an Internet-based questionnaire was sent to doctors who were registered in the Association of Korean Medicine in September 2016. Participants were first asked general profile questions, which included age, gender, work experience as a practitioner, and specialties. Second, they were asked whether they had experience with hypertension treatment and additional questions related to hypertension. Results: A total of 991 replies were received to the questionnaire. Most of the Korean medical doctors (95%) had blood pressure units and had monitored blood pressure. A majority of the Korean medicine doctors (55%) had provided hypertension treatment. Acupuncture and herbal medicine were commonly used for the treatment of hypertensive patients. In addition, bloodletting, moxibustion, pharmacopuncture, cupping, Chuna, Qigong exercise, meditation, and Tai Chi were used. Many doctors also recommended lifestyle modification. The respondents said that Korean medicine improves general health conditions (42.6%) and has low adverse effects (29.9%). One of the most common opinions about the revitalization measures of Korean medicine was expanding health insurance benefits (20.8%). Conclusions: Through this survey, we found out information about the present situation of hypertension treatment in Korean medicine. In the future, it is possible that hypertension treatment using Korean medicine will be demanded and used by practitioners if it is covered by public health insurance.

Vol.38 No.6

Objectives: The aim of this study was to review the clinical research on antihypertensive effects of Korean herbal medicines that function by inducing diuresis. Methods: Literature searches were performed using PubMed, Cochrane, CNKI, Wanfang, Cinii, Oasis, KISS, NDSL, RISS, DBPia, with the keywords “利水”, “利尿”, “高血壓”, “hypertension”, and “lishui.” The search range included only randomized controlled trials that verified the effects of Korean herbal medicine interventions on hypertension. The selected studies were assessed by risk of bias (RoB). Results: 26 reports were selected from a total of 532 identified. For these reports, meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.3. From this analysis, it was observed that the combined treatment of Korean medicine and antihypertensive drugs had a significantly higher total effective rate (TER) and improvement in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) than did the use of a single antihypertensive drug. The risk ratio of TER for lowering blood pressure was 1.25. The mean differences of SBP, DBP were -19.63 mm Hg (95% confidential interval (CI), -22.45 mm Hg, -16.80 mm Hg, p<0.00001), and -5.39 mm Hg (95% CI, -7.36 mm Hg, -3.42 mm Hg, p<0.00001) respectively. The use of Korean medicine only did not improve blood pressure, as compared to the use of an antihypertensive drug. Most of items of RoB were unclear, and the methodological quality was low. Conclusions: The combination of antihypertensive drugs and Korean medical treatment can effectively improve SBP, DBP, and TER. This finding could be widely utilized in clinical practice in Korean medicine.

Using an evaporation system, SiO₂ was deposited as a buffer layer between a PET substrate and a ITO layer and then ITO/SiO₂/PET layers were annealed for 1.5 hours at the temperature of 180℃. Adhesion and electro-optical properties of ITO films were studied with thickness variance of a SiO₂ buffer layer. As a result of introduction of the SiO₂ buffer layer, sheet resistance and resistivity increased and a ITO film with optimum sheet resistance ( 529.3 Ω/square) for an upper ITO film of resistive type touch panel could be obtained when SiO₂ of 50 A was deposited. And it was found that ITO films with SiO₂ buffer layer have higher transmittance of 88~90% at 550 ㎚ wavelength than ITO films with no buffer layers and the transmittance was enhanced as SiO₂ thickness increased from 50 A to 100 A. Adhesion property of ITO films with SiO₂ buffer layers became better than ITO films with no buffer layers and this property was independent of SiO₂ thickness variance (50~100 A). By depositing a SiO₂ buffer layer of 50 A on the PET substrate and sputtering a ITO thin film on the layer, a ITO film with enhanced adhesion, electro-optical properties could be obtained.

Vol.39 No.1

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Cheonmagudeung-eum (CGE) for essential hypertension by systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The period of literature search was until October 30, 2016, and 14 electronic databases were utilized as search engines. The evaluation for the risk of bias (RoB) was conducted by using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. The meta-analysis was performed by synthesizing outcome data, including total effective rate (TER), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and the incidence of adverse events. Result: There were a total of 64 RCTs using CGE on adult essential hypertension. In the RoB evaluation, most of the items were unclear, and the qualities of studies were rated low. The concurrent treatment of CGE and antihypertensive drug (AHD) showed a significant hypotensive effect since the risk ratio (RR) of TER was 1.17 times (95% CI 1.14, 1.20, p<0.01) higher than that of AHD alone. In addition, the mean difference (MD) appeared low as 8.73 mm/Hg in SBP (95% CI -11.36, -6.09, p<0.01) and 5.81 mm/Hg in DBP (95% CI -7.50, -4.12, p<0.01). Conclusion: Through this study, it was identified that the combined treatment of CGE and AHD on hypertension would be more effective than that of AHD treatment alone. However, due to the low quality of the selected original articles, the significance of this conclusion is somewhat limited, and we hope that this would be complemented through more rigorous RCTs in the future.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to report a 118-case series demonstrating the treatment of hypertension in a Korean medicine clinic and to evaluate the effect of Korean medicine. Materials & Methods: From 2006 to 2018, patients who visited a Korean medicine clinic for hypertension were investigated by studying changes in blood pressure before and after treatment with herbal medicine, acupuncture, and Uwhangchungsim-won. The average treatment period was 81.6 days. Results: After treatment with Korean medicine, the mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of all patients decreased significantly (p<0.001). The SBP decreased from $148.9{\pm}10.3$ to $133.8{\pm}13.9$, and the DBP decreased from $91.3{\pm}7.5$ to $82.5{\pm}9.0$. After treatment with acupuncture or Uwhangchungsim-won, the patient showed decreased blood pressure but the differences were not statistically significant when compared with the non-treated group. Conclusions: This study shows the real situation of hypertension treatment in Korean medicine and indicates that Korean medicine could be one of the primary treatment for hypertension. However, this study had limitations, such as variations in the treatment periods, the frequency of acupuncture treatments, and the type of antihypertensive drugs. For further evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment for hypertension using Korean medicine, a well-designed study should be undertaken.
