Genome-wide identification and functional prediction of silicon (Si) transporters in poplar (Populus trichocarpa)

        Hassan Md Mahmudul,Martin Samir,Feng Kai,Yates Timothy B.,Yuan Guoliang,Martin Madhavi Z.,Martin Stanton,Muchero Wellington,Griffiths Natalie A.,Weston David J.,Yang Xiaohan 한국식물생명공학회 2023 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.17 No.2

Silicon (Si) enhances plant tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stressors such as salinity, drought, and heat. In addition, Si can be biomineralized within plants to form organic carbon-containing phytoliths that can have ecosystem-level consequences by contributing to long-term carbon sequestration. Si is taken up and transported in plants via different transporter proteins such as influx transporters (e.g., Lsi1, Lsi6) and efflux transporters (e.g., Lsi2). Additionally, the imported Si can be deposited in plant leaves via silicification process using the Siliplant 1 (e.g., Slp1) protein. Functional homologs of these proteins have been reported in different food crops. Here, we performed a genome-wide analysis to identify different Si transporters and Slp1 homologs in the bioenergy crop poplar (Populus trichocarpa Torr. and A. Gray ex W. Hook). We identified one channel-type Si influx transporter (PtLsi1; Potri.017G083300), one Si efflux transporter (PtLsi2; Potri.012G144000) and two proteins like Slp1 (PtSlp1a; Potri.004G168600 and PtSlp1b; Potri.009G129900) in the P. trichocarpa genome. We found a unique sequence (KPKPPVFKPPPVPI) in PtSlp1a which is repeated six times. Repeated presence of this sequence in PtSlp1a indicates that this protein might be important for silicification processes in P. trichocarpa. The mutation profiles of different Si transporters in a P. trichocarpa genome-wide association study population identified significant and impactful mutations in Potri.004G168600 and Potri.009G129900. Using a publically accessible database (http://bar.utoronto.ca/eplant_poplar/), digital expression analysis of the putative Si transporters in P. trichocarpa found low to moderate expression in the anticipated tissues, such as roots and leaves. Subcellular localization analysis found that PtLsi1/PtLsi2 are localized in the plasma membrane, whereas PtSlp1a/PtSlp1b are found in the extracellular spaces. Protein–Protein interaction analysis of PtLsi1/PtLsi2 identified Delta-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthase (P5CS) as one of the main interacting partners of PtLsi2, which plays a key role in proline biosynthesis. Proline is a well-known participant in biotic and abiotic stress tolerance in plants. These findings will reinforce future efforts to modify Si accumulation for enhancing plant stress tolerance and carbon sequestration in poplar.

Identification of Arcanobacterium pyogenes isolated by post mortem examinations of a bearded dragon and a gecko by phenotypic and genotypic properties

        H. Ülbegi-Mohyla,M. Hijazin,J. Alber,A. A. Hassan,A. Abdulmawjood,E. Prenger-Berninghoff,R. Weiß,M. Zschöck,C. Lämmler 대한수의학회 2010 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.11 No.3

The present study was designed to identify phenotypically and genotypically two Arcanobacterium (A.) pyogenes strains isolated by post mortem examinations of a bearded dragon and a gecko. The A. pyogenes strains showed the typical biochemical properties and displayed CAMP-like synergistic hemolytic activities with various indicator strains. The species identity could be confirmed genotypically by amplification and sequencing of the 16S rDNA gene and, as novel target gene, by sequencing of the beta subunit of RNA polymerase encoding gene rpoB, of both strains and of reference strains representing nine species of the genus Arcanobacterium. The species identity of the two A. pyogenes strains could additionally be confirmed by PCR mediated amplification of species specific parts of the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region, the pyolysin encoding gene plo and by amplification of the collagen-binding protein encoding gene cbpA. All these molecular targets might help to improve the future identification and further characterization of A. pyogenes which, as demonstrated in the present study, could also be isolated from reptile specimens.

Selection of Sahiwal Cattle Bulls on Pedigree and Progeny

        Bhatti, A.A.,Khan, M.S.,Rehman, Z.,Hyder, A.U.,Hassan, F. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.1

The objective of the study was to compare ranking of Sahiwal bulls selected on the basis of highest lactation milk yield of their dams with their estimated breeding values (EBVs) using an animal model. Data on 23,761 lactation milk yield records of 5,936 cows from five main Livestock Experiment Stations in Punjab province of Pakistan (1964-2004) were used for the study. At present the young A.I bulls are required to be from A-category bull-dams. Dams were categorized as A, B, C and D if they had highest lactation milk yield of ${\geq}$2,700, 2,250-2,699, 1,800-2,249 and <1,800 litres, respectively. The EBVs for lactation milk yield were estimated for all the animals using an individual animal model having fixed effect of herd-year and season of calving and random effect of animal. Fixed effect of parity and random effect of permanent environment were incorporated when multiple lactation were used. There were 396 young bulls used for semen collection and A.I during 1973-2004. However, progeny with lactation yields recorded, were available only for 91 bulls and dams could be traced for only 63 bulls. Overall lactation milk yield averaged 1,440.8 kg. Milk yield was 10% heritable with repeatability of 39%. Ranking bulls on highest lactation milk yield of their dams, the in-vogue criteria of selecting bulls, had a rank correlation of 0.167 (p<0.190) with ranking based on EBVs from animal model analysis. Bulls' EBVs for all lactations had rank correlation of 0.716 (p<0.001) with EBVs based on first lactation milk yield and 0.766 (p<0.001) with average EBVs of dam and sire (pedigree index). Ranking of bulls on highest lactation yield of their dams has no association with their ranking based on animal model evaluation. Young Sahiwal bulls should be selected on the basis of pedigree index instead of highest lactation yield of dams. This can help improve the genetic potential of the breed accruing to conservation and development efforts.

NEW CCD OBSERVATIONS AND THE FIRST PHOTOMETRIC STUDY OF THE CONTACT BINARY AP UMI

        N. S. AWADALLA,M. A. HANNA,M. N. Ismail,I. A. Hassan,M. A. Elkhamisy 한국천문학회 2016 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.49 No.3

We obtain the first complete CCD light curves (LCs) of the contact binary AP UMi in the VRI bands and analyzed them by means of the PHOEBE code. A spotted model is applied to treat the asymmetry in the LCs. The LC morphology clearly shows the O'Connell effect and the solution shows an influence of star spots on both components. Such effect of star spots is common between the RS CVn and W UMa chromospherically active stars. Based on the obtained solution of the LCs we investigate the evolutionary state of the components and conclude that the system is a pre-intermediate contact binary ($f=0.29$) with mass ratio $q=0.38$, and it is an A-type W UMa system where the less massive secondary component is cooler than the more massive primary one.} We obtain the first complete CCD light curves (LCs) of the contact binary AP UMi in the VRI bands and analyzed them by means of the PHOEBE code. A Spectrum Sharing Model for Compatibility between IMT-Advanced and Digital Broadcasting

( Walid A. Hassan ),( Tharek Abd Rahman ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2012 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.6 No.9

Recently, the International Telecommunication Union allocated the 470-862 MHz band to the digital broadcasting (DB) service. Moreover, the 790-862 MHz sub-band will be allocated to the next-generation mobile system, known as the International Mobile Telecommunication - Advanced (IMT-A), and to the DB on a co-primary basis in the year 2015. Currently, two candidate technologies are available to represent the IMT-A system; the Mobile WiMAX and Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A). One of the main criteria of the IMT-A candidate is to not cause additional interference to the primary service (i.e., DB). In this paper, we address the spectrum sharing issue between the IMT-A candidates and the DB service. More precisely, we investigate the interference effect between the DB service and the mobile network, which could be either LTE-A or WiMAX. Our study proposes a spectrum sharing model to take into account the impact of interference and evaluates the spectrum sharing requirements such as frequency separation and separation distance. This model considers three spectrum sharing scenarios: co-channel, zero guard band, and adjacent channel. A statistical analysis is performed, by considering the interferer spectrum emission mask and victim receiver blocking techniques. The interference-to-noise ratio is used as an essential spectrum sharing criterion between the systems. The model considers the random distribution of the users, antenna heights, and the bandwidth effect as well as the deployment environment in order to achieve spectrum sharing. The results show that LTE-A is preferable to WiMAX in terms of having less interference impact on DB; this can eventually allow the operation of both services without performance degradation and thus will lead to efficient utilization of the radio spectrum.

Eco-friendly Synthesis of New Polyfunctional Azo Dyes Using Shrimp Chitin as a Catalyst: Application on Polyester Fabrics and Their Biological Activities

        Entesar A. Hassan,Hamada M. Mashaly,Zeinab M. Hashem,Salem E. Zayed,Ahmed M. Abo-Bakr 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.9

A series of varying and poly-functionalized heterocyclic compounds 3a-c, 4d-k, 6a,b, 8, 9, and 12 containing azofunction have been synthesized using 2-(1-(4-aminophenyl)ethylidene)malononitrile (1) and/or its diazonium salt as buildingblocks. In addition, new pyridazine derivatives 4a-c, 7a,b, and 13a-f were synthesized. Subsequent treating of the resultedazo dyes moieties with different reagents in conventional and green conditions using microwave irradiation and shrimp chitinas a green catalyst; homo- and hetero-molecules containing azo dyes were gathered. The obtained azo dyes were applied onfabrics at high temperatures and their properties such as washing fastness using standard soap (SDS) and rubbing fastness(wet and dry) under controlled conditions of pressure, speed, and moisture were studied. In addition, they were screened fortheir biological activities on two bacterial and two mycolic species. The synthesized products were characterized by theirelemental and spectral analyses such as IR, MS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectra. The produced dyestuffs 3a-c, 4d, f, h, i, j,6a,b, 8, and 12 were dyed on polyester fabrics, and subsequently their dyeing properties and their light, washing, perspiration, rubbing, and sublimation fastness was determined and the dyed samples showed very good fastness levels to rubbing, washing, thermal fixation, good light, and possessed very good perspiration fastness.

A discrete time Geo/G/1 retrial queue with general retrial times and balking customers

        A. Aboul-Hassan,S.I. Rabia,F.A. Taboly 한국통계학회 2008 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.37 No.4

In this work, we consider a discrete time Geo/G/1 retrial queue with general retrial times and balking customers. If a new arriving customer finds the server busy, he may join the orbit to retry getting the required service again or depart completely from the system. Using the supplementary variable technique, this queueing system is modelled using a Markov chain. We derive the generating functions of the steady state distribution of this Markov chain. Hence, we establish the generating functions of the orbit size and the system size distributions. This set of generating functions is used to derive various performance measures. We prove a stochastic decomposition law and use it to a derive a measure of the proximity between the distributions of the system size in the present model and the corresponding one without retrials. A set of recursive formulae is built up to facilitate computing the orbit size and the system size distributions. Numerical results are presented with a focus on the effect of balking on the system performance.

Peritoneal cancer index as a predictor of survival in advanced stage serous epithelial ovarian cancer: a prospective study

        Alaa A. Elzarkaa,Waleed Shaalan,Doaa Elemam,Hassan Mansour,Mahmoud Melis,Eduard Malik,Amr A. Soliman 대한부인종양학회 2018 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.29 No.4

OBJECTIVE: A numerical score, the peritoneal cancer index (PCI), was developed to reflect the extent of tumor growth in gastric and colorectal cancers and to tailor treatment. This study aimed to examine the value of the PCI score in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) regarding completeness of surgical cytoreduction and survival. METHODS: This was a prospective observational cohort study. Patients with primary serous EOC at International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages IIIB or higher were included. Patients with FIGO stage IVB as well as those assigned to receive neoadjuvant treatment were excluded from the study. The PCI was obtained and registered intraoperatively. RESULTS: In the study period we recruited 96 patients with serous EOC stage IIIB-IVA. A PCI score cut-off value of 13 was calculated using a receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve, above which worse survival is expected (area under the curve [AUC]=0.641; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.517-0.765; sensitivity and specificity 80.6%, 45.0%, respectively; p=0.050). A multivariate analysis determined that suboptimal surgical cytoreduction was the only independent predictive factor for recurrence (odds ratio [OR]=7.548; 95% CI=1.473-38.675; p=0.015). A multivariate analysis determined that only suboptimal surgical cytoreduction (hazard ratio [HR]=2.33; 95% CI=0.616-8.795; p=0.005), but not PCI score >13 (HR=1.289; 95% CI=0.329-5.046; p=0.716), was an independent predictive factor for death. CONCLUSION: We conclude from this study that the PCI score is a reliable tool helping to assess the extent of disease in advanced serous EOC patients and may help predicting complete surgical cytoreduction but cannot qualify as a predictor of survival.

L-Arginine Ameliorates Kidney Function and Urinary Bladder Sensitivity in Experimentally-induced Renal Dysfunction in Rats

        ( Mahmoud A. Mansour ),( Othman A. Al-Shabanah ),( Hassan A. El-Khashef ) 생화학분자생물학회 2003 BMB Reports Vol.36 No.4

Effects of L-arginine and NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on the renal dysfunction that is induced by cisplatin(CDDP) were investigated. A single dose of CDDP (4.5 mg/kg o.p.) induced renotoxicity, which was manifested by increasing the sensitivity of isolated urinary bladder rings to acetylcholine (ACh), together with a significant elevation of serum urea and creatinine, and a severe decrease in serum albumin. Moreover, renal dysfunction was further confirmed by a significant decrease of enzyme activities, such as glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px (E.C 1.11.1.9), catalase(E.C 1.11.1.6), as well as a significant increase in lipid peroxides that were measured as malondialdhyde (MDA) in kidney tissue homogenates. The administration of L-arginine(70 mg/kg/d p.o in drinking water 5 d before and 5 d after the CDDP injection) significantly ameliorated the renotoxic effects of CDDP, as judged by restoring the normal responses of isolated bladder rings to Ach, and also by an improvement in a range of renal function indices, which included serum urea and creatinine concentrations and kidney weight. In addition, L-arginine prevents the rise of MDA, as well as a reduction of GSH-Px and catalase activities in kidney tissues homogenates. On the other hand, the administration of L-NAME (4 mg/kg/d p.o) resulted in no protection against renal dysfunction that was induced by CDDP treatment. The findings of this study suggest that L-arginine can attenuate kidney injury that is produced by CDDP treatment. In addition, L-arginine may be a beneficial remedy for CDDP-induced renal toxicity, and could be used to improve the therapeutic index of CDDF!
