        Paeoniflorin increases the survival of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected Caenorhabditis elegans at the immunosuppression stage by activating PMK-1, BAR-1, and EGL-1 signals

        Paeoniflorin is the major active compound of total glycoside of paeony in Paeonia lactiflora Pall. Although several aspects of beneficial effects of paeoniflorin have been described, whether the paeoniflorin treatment is helpful for inhibiting the pathogen infection-induced immunosuppression remains largely unclear. Using the immunosuppression model in Caenorhabditis elegans induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, we here examined the beneficial effect of paeoniflorin treatment against the immunosuppression induced by bacterial pathogen infection. In this immunosuppression model, we observed that the survival rate of P. aeruginosa infected nematodes at the immunosuppression stage could be significantly increased by 25–100 mg/L paeoniflorin treatment. P. aeruginosa accumulation in intestinal lumen of nematodes at the immunosuppression stage was reduced by paeoniflorin treatment. Paeoniflorin could activate the expressions of antimicrobial genes (lys-1 and lys-8) in nematodes at the immunosuppression stage. Moreover, at the immunosuppression stage, paeoniflorin treatment increased the expressions of bar-1, pmk-1, and egl-1 required for the control of innate immunity against bacterial infection. Meanwhile, RNAi of bar-1, pmk-1, and egl-1 inhibited the beneficial effect of paeoniflorin treatment in increasing the survival, reducing the P. aeruginosa accumulation in intestinal lumen, and activating the expressions of antimicrobial genes (lys-1 and lys-8) in nematodes at the immunosuppression stage. Therefore, paeoniflorin treatment could effectively inhibit the immunosuppression induced by bacterial pathogen infection in the hosts.

        Prediction of the Axial Bearing Compressive Capacities of CFST Columns Based on Machine Learning Methods

        Concrete-fi lled steel tubes (CFSTs) are widely used in engineering structures due to their excellent mechanical properties and economic benefi ts. This study focused on the construction of artifi cial neural network (ANN) models with high prediction capabilities and prediction accuracies that could predict the axial compression load capacities of short CFST columns using machine learning methods. A database was created by searching literature published over the past 40 years regarding circular-CFST bearing-capacity testing. Three ANN models with diff erent input parameters were developed, and used the Whale Optimization Algorithm to optimize the network weights and thresholds, the core idea of which comes from the humpback whale's special bubble net attack method. Then, the predictions of the proposed machine learning models were also compared with the theoretical values produced by the formulas proposed in existing codes. The results show that the ANN models had higher accuracies and a wider application range than the existing code models. Based on the Garson's algorithm, we perform parameter sensitivity analysis on the network model to enhance the interpretability of the neural network model. Finally, a graphical user tool is built to make the strength of CFST can be predicted quickly.

        1-methylcyclopropene treatment improves postharvest quality and antioxidant activity of Prunus domestica L. cv. Ximei fruit

        Prunus domestica L. cv. Ximei fruit perishes quickly due to intense metabolic activity after being harvested. To prolong shelf life and maintain fruit quality, the eff ects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment on P. domestica fruit during storage at 4 ± 1 °C were investigated. The results showed that the soluble solid content (SSC), respiratory rate (29.8%), ethylene production (27.2%), anthocyanin content, malonaldehyde content (MDA), hydrogen peroxide content (H 2O2), and superoxide anion activity (O 2·−) of P. domestica fruit were all signifi cantly reduced by 1-MCP treatment (1.0 μL L −1), while the content of ascorbic acid and total phenol, and the activity of SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE (SOD, 61.3%), CATALASE (CAT, 39.0%), ASCORBATE PEROXIDASE (APX, 23.7%), and PEROXIDASE (POD, 38.0%) increased compared to untreated fruit after 35 days of cold storage. Overall, 1-MCP treatment could maintain high postharvest quality and anti- oxidant activity in P. domestica fruit

        Microwave Sintering of Graphene-Nanoplatelet-Reinforced Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-based Composites

        In this study, we performed a microwave sintering (MWS) of $Al_2O_3$ ceramic and $Al_2O_3$-based composites with nominal contents of graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 vol%. The GPL dispersion in N-methyl pyrroleketone was optimized to deagglomerate the GPLs without damaging their structure. Dense composites were then obtained by MWS at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The effects of different GPL contents on the phase compositions, microstructures, and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The microstructures of the composites became finer with the incorporation of the GPLs. The well-dispersed GPL fillers led to higher sintered densities in the composites. The optimal mechanical properties were achieved with 0.4 vol% GPLs. For this sample, the hardness, fracture toughness, and bending strength were $2000kgf/mm^2$, $6.19MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, and 365.10 MPa, respectively. The addition of GPL could improve the microstructure of the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic and has potential to improve the fracture toughness of the ceramics.

        한국 화장품의 중국시장 진출방안에 관한 연구

        중국의 화장품 시장은 2012년 매출액 약 36조원으로 미국에 이어 세계 2위의 화장품 소비대국으로 부상하였으며, 부동산과 통신, 자동차, 관광과 함께 중국 내수시장의 5대 소비산업이다. 그러나 한국화장품의 대중국 수출은 2.2억 달러로 시장점유율은 1%내외로 저조하다. 따라서 본 연구는 년 평균 16%우의 성장률을 달성하고 있는 중국 화장품시장에서의 한국 화장품의 진출방안을 모색하는 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 화장품 산업과 관련된 국내 · 외 논문, 통계자료, 서적, 보고서 등을 중심으로 한 문헌연구와 자료를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 한국 화장품은 중국의 지역별, 내륙간, 기후별, 교육수준별 등 다양한 격차, 획일화된 마케팅전략, 중국 파트너에 대한 협력부족, 히트제품의 불법 복제 판매, 중국 시장 전문가 부족 등으로 중국시장 진출에 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다. 따라서 한국 화장품이 중국시장에서 시장점유율을 높이기 위해서는 브랜드 이미지의 강화, 중국어 브랜드 네이밍의 개발, SNS 강화 및 체험마케팅 전략 추진, 화장품 축제 및 한국우수상품전시회개최, 중국 온라인 시장 활용, 중국 수입절차의 철저한 준비, 중국 전문인력의 육성 등이 필요하다. China is still a developing country with a big gaps between the rich and the poor. Total annual sales amount of beauty/cosmetics business has passed over about 36 trillion Won in China in the year 2012, and now is the second largest cosmetics consuming country next to U.S.A. The beauty/cosmetics industry of China is one of 5 biggest consuming industries of local Chinese market together with real estate, communication, automotive, and tourism industries. In such a Chinese cosmetics market, Korea has recorded about 220 billion Won as for the export amount to China. Korean cosmetics is holding as low market share as 1%by Amore Pacific and 0.4%by LG Life &Health compared to market shares of global business brands such as P&G(15.8%), Loreal (11%), Shiseido (5.4%), etc. In order to expand the advancing of Korean cosmetics into Chinese market, therefore, the research and analysis of such issues should be carried out immediately than ever before. The objective of this paper is to set up the advancing plan of Korean cosmetics into the China market. In order to achieve the this purpose, literature research and data analysis have been processed concentrating on the domestic/foreign literature such as papers, statistics data, books, reports, and internet sites related to the cosmetics industry. However, the advance of Korean cosmetics into Chinese cosmetics market has attained low performance as there are variety of differences from each district, inland area, weather, and education level. Also, Korean cosmetics companies could not advance directly into the Chinese market as of uniform marketing strategy and lack of cooperation with the Chinese partners, as well as lack of long-term management goals. The price and distribution net-work have been collapsed due to the short-term marketing, depending only on the local agents, and the illegal reproduction and sales of hot selling items that could not be blocked up. There also has been cutthroat competition, like biting up own flesh, because of no long-term strategy and the failure to set up the cooperative relationship to exchange the business and market information among Korean companies, as there have been no experts cultivated for Chinese market.         Aggregation behavior analysis of hydrate particles in the bend pipe based on the population balance model

        The hydrate particle aggregation is crucial for the flow safety of oil and gas pipelines. In this paper, coupled with the Eulerian-Eulerian model, k-ε turbulence model and the population balance model considering the hydrate aggregation and breakage, the hydrate aggregation process is studied in the bend, and the change of the average particle size under different hydrate volume fractions is discussed. The results show that the hydrate aggregation process includes two stages in the bend, namely the rapid growth and the dynamic equilibrium. In the rapid growth stage, both the hydrate concentration and particle size in the elbow increase rapidly, and the high concentration and large particle size regions on the inside of the elbow also increase significantly. Furthermore, two types of aggregates are formed on the inside of the elbow. One is a small amount of large-particle aggregates, while the other is the relatively high concentration of medium-size aggregates. Besides, the uniform suspension with a smaller concentration and particle size is distributed on the outside of the elbow, but there are also large-size particles that aggregate and adhere near the wall of pipe. As the hydrate volume fraction increases, the hydrate average particle size increases. High concentration hydrate reaches dynamic equilibrium faster during the flow process.

        Proliferation, Accumulation of Polyphenols, and Antioxidant Activities of Callus from the ‘Anji Baicha’ Cultivar of Tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Ktze.]

        Tea is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide and the relatively high levels polyphenols is benefit for health. In this study, we developed an efficient system for proliferation of callus from ‘Anji Baicha’, a cultivar of tea (Camellia sinensis ). Callus tissue was initially induced by culturing leaf explants on medium containing different plant growth regulators. For callus induction, thidiazuron (TDZ) was more effective than 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), and N6-benzyladenine (BA). The frequency of callus induction from leaf explants reached 90.21% on 1.0 mg·L<SUP>-1</SUP> TDZ and the developed callus was reddish and friable. We also tested the effect of different concentrations of NAA, 2,4-D, indole 3-acetic acid (IAA), BA, and TDZ, alone and in combinations, on callus proliferation. Medium supplemented with TDZ in combination with IAA was suitable for callus proliferation and accumulation of tea polyphenols. The growth index value and tea polyphenol content of callus cultured on MS medium containing 0.5 mg·L<SUP>-1</SUP> TDZ and 1.0 mg·L<SUP>-1</SUP> IAA was maximally 1,351% and 23.24%, respectively, and the relative abundance of epicatechin was as high as 17.449%. We also measured the antioxidant activity of all samples and the callus with the highest tea polyphenol content also exhibited high potential radical scavenging activity.

        A BIO-INSPIRED POLYDOPAMINE APPROACH TO PREPARATION OF GOLD-COATED Fe3O4 CORE-SHELL NANOPARTICLES: SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND MECHANISM

        A biomimetic and facile approach for integrating Fe3O4 and Au with polydopamine (PDA) was proposed to construct gold-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Au–PDA) with a core–shell structure by coupling in situ reduction with a seed-mediated method in aqueous solution at room temperature. The morphology, structure and composition of the core–shell structured Fe3O4@Au–PDA nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). The formation process of Au shell was assessed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. More importantly, according to investigating changes in PDA molecules by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and in preparation process of the zeta-potential data of nanoparticles, the mechanism of core–shell structure formation was proposed. Firstly, PDA-coated Fe3O4 are obtained using dopamine (DA) self-polymerization to form thin and surface-adherent PDA films onto the surface of a Fe3O4 "core". Then, Au seeds are attached on the surface of PDA-coated Fe3O4 via electrostatic interaction in order to serve as nucleation centers catalyzing the reduction of Au3+ to Au0 by the catechol groups in PDA. Accompanied by the deposition of Au, PDA films transfer from the surface of Fe3O4 to that of Au as stabilizing agent. In order to confirm the reasonableness of this mechanism, two verification experiments were conducted. The presence of PDA on the surface of Fe3O4@Au–PDA nanoparticles was confirmed by the finding that glycine or ethylenediamine could be grafted onto Fe3O4@Au–PDA nanoparticles through Schiff base reaction. In addition, Fe3O4@Au–DA nanoparticles, in which DA was substituted for PDA, were prepared using the same method as that for Fe3O4@Au–PDA nanoparticles and characterized by UV-Vis, TEM and FTIR. The results validated that DA possesses multiple functions of attaching Au seeds as well as acting as both reductant and stabilizing agent, the same functions as those of PDA.
