Background: Standing biomass, litter production, rate of litter decomposition, amount of litter on forest floor, and amount of soil organic carbon distribution were investigated from March 2016 to November 2018 in order to evaluate the ecosystem value through organic carbon distribution in the Pinus densiflora forest at Namsan, Seoul Metropolitan City. Results: The amount of organic carbon in the Pinus densiflora forest was 261.09 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> during the research period, and fixed organic carbon in plant through net photosynthesis was 3.2 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> year<sup>-1</sup>. The organic carbon in plant was 62.77 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> (24.04%), in litter on the forest floor was 3.65 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> (1.40%), and in soil was 194.67 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> (74.56%). The value of plant, litter on forest floor, and soil organic carbon distribution were each 6,277,000 won ha<sup>-1</sup>, 365, 000 won ha<sup>-1</sup>, and 19,467,000 won ha<sup>-1</sup>. The value per ton of fixed organic carbon in plant through net photosynthesis was 320,000 won ha<sup>-1</sup> year<sup>-1</sup> and the value of ecosystem services stored in carbon in the Namsan forest ecosystem was about 26.1 million won ha<sup>-1</sup> for 3 years. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the pine forests of Namsan rapidly decompose leaves due to the high atmospheric temperature and accumulate a large amount of organic carbon in the soil to provide climate control regulatory service function.

Single and 4 weeks oral administration of l-muscone, a major active ingredient of musk, to beagle dogs of both sexes were performed to investigate both acute and subacute toxicity. Beagle dogs(3 males and 3 females) in acute experiments were administered orally with single dosage of 2,000 ㎎/㎏ and groups of 9 male and 9 female beagle dogs in subacute experiments were given daily different dosage of l-muscone, 0.2㎎/㎏/day(low dosage group), 2 ㎎/㎏/day(middle dosage group), or 20 ㎎/㎏day(high dosage group) once a day for 4 weeks by oral route according to the Established Regulation of Korean Food and Drug Administration(1996.4.16). LD_50 value for beagle dogs was more than 2,000 ㎎/㎏ on oral route for both male and females. In animals administered with l-muscone, there were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs, urinalysis, eye examination, hematology, serum chemistry, organ weight and other findings. No histolopathological lesions were observed in both control and treatment groups. Above data strongly suggest that l-muscone in beagle dogs is considered to be safe.

The authors experienced 6 cases of Dimecron intoxication, an organophosphate, that required mechanical ventilator treatment. Among 6 cases, 4 cases were intoxication due to suicidal attempt and 2 cases were due to accidental exposure. Among 4 cases of intoxication due to suicidal attempt, only one patient recovered even after aggressive treatments using gastric lavage, mechanical ventilation, atropine and PAM(pralidoxime). Two cases of intoxications due to accidental exposure, 1 case needed mechanical ventilation. Both cases were recovered without any sequele, however. Organophosphate, especially Dimecron, showed high rates of resfiratory muscle paralysis and mechanical ventilator support. The mortality rate of organophosphate agents can be decreased by education, wearing protectors, and aggressive mechanical ventilator treatment when respiratory failure develops.

The pediatric condylar fracture occurs very frequently in the mandible, but this injury is occasionally ignored due to difficulty of diagnosis and no cooperation of patient. The adequate initial diagnosis and active treatment must be performed because delayed and improper treatment lead to possible severe complication such as TMJ ankylosis and retardation of mandibular development. Most pediatric condylar fracture is mainly performed by the conservative or functional treatment. but it may be required open reduction according to cases. In this study, Activator is applied for functional treatment of pediatric condylar fracture and fair recovery of jaw function is acquired.

Pressure sore is an area of ischemic tissue loss resulting from prolonged or often repeated pressure, usually over a bony prominence of body. Recently, the prevalence of pressure sore is major clinical problem, due to the increased number of patients with spinal cord injuries or longterm comatous patient after traffic, industrial accidents. The surgical principles in the treatment of pressure sores are total excision of the ulcer, scartissue, bursae, complete removal of all infected bone with recontouring of bony prominences to alleviate discrete pressure points and resurfacing and padding of the defects with healthy and well vascularized tissues. The sacral sore is the most common site for the development of pressure sore in Korea. We had experienced 14 cases who had received surgical treatments for sacral sores with transverse lumbosacral back flap. We obtained the following conclusions. Advantages 1)It is quick and easy procedure 2)The flap elevation itself is relatively bloodless 3)The donor defect is in a non-weight-bearing area 4)Muscle is not sacrified(possibly of importance in the ambulatory patient) 5)Surgical options are preserved in cases of recurrence(the flap itself may be reelevated and inset in some cases of recurrence) Disadvantages 1)It is lacking the bulky padding afforded by alternative musculocutaneous flaps 2)The vascularity of the flap tip is empirically less dependable than that of a musculocutaneous flap 3)The donor defect is large, cannot usually be closed primarily, and may prove of cosmetic concern

Nine cattle among 18 in a native Korean herd died or were euthanized within 3 days. The affected cattle showed cowshed. The pigs and dogs had been fed leftover food originating from nearby restaurants, and the cattle could presumably reach the contaminated food in the pig troughs. Necropsy revealed a few chicken bones and red pepper pieces as well as large amounts of grain and rice straw hay mixed in the rumen. Botulism type D was isolated in the ruminal contents of one of the cattle. We speculated that the outbreak was associated with the cattle incidentally eating presumably contaminated leftover food from the pig trough.

Background/Aims: Sacroiliitis is a frequent extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of sacroiliitis using a validated screening tool based on abdominopelvic computed tomography (APCT) in Korean patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and examine potential associations between clinical characteristics and sacroiliitis. Methods: One hundred five patients with CD undergoing APCT for any indication at an IBD clinic were matched 1:1 for age and sex with 105 controls without underlying chronic illnesses. Using a validated APCT screening tool that defines sacroiliitis as either ankylosis or a total erosion score (TES) ≥ 3, all computed tomography scans were assessed by two independent, blinded radiologists. We compared the prevalence of sacroiliitis between CD patients and controls and clinical characteristics between CD patients with and without sacroiliitis. Results: The prevalence of sacroiliitis was significantly higher in CD patients than in controls (13.3% vs. 4.8%, p = 0.030). All subjects with sacroiliitis had a TES ≥ 3, but no ankylosis. The assessment of sacroiliitis in APCT showed excellent interreader reliability (Cohen’s kappa = 0.933 for presence of sacroiliitis). Sacroiliitis in CD patients was bilateral and asymptomatic. There were no significant associations between sacroiliitis and any demographic data or clinical characteristics in these patients. Conclusions: The prevalence of APCT-detected sacroiliitis in CD patients was higher than that in controls, but the condition was asymptomatic. The clinical significance of asymptomatic sacroiliitis in Korean CD patients remains unclear.
Characterization of an Catechol 2,3-dioxygenase from Pseudomonas putida SU10

Pseudomonas putida SUl0의 4-methylcatechol 2,3-dioxygenase의 정제를 ammonium sulfate 침전, DEAE 5PW, superdex S-200, Resource-Q의 chromatog chromatography를 통하여 실시하였다. Gel filtration 에 의한 분자량을 약 130 kDa이며 SDS/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis에 의한 subunit의 분자량은 34 kDa이므로 이 효소는 4개의 동일한 subunit로 되어 있음을 확이하였다. 이 효소의 N-terminal amino acid 서열을 결정한 결과 다음 extradiol dioxygenases와 높은 동질성을 보여주었다. Catechol과 methyl로 치환된 catechol에 대한 활성을 조사한 결과 catechol이나 3-methylcatechol보다 4-methylcatechol에 대하여 높게 나타내었다. 이들 기질에 대한 Km 값은 3.5-5.07μM 이다.
