Background: It is known in some studies that higher the LDL-C, the greater the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. However, studies of the causal effects between LDL-C and hypertension are limited by their observational study design, and genetic epidemiology studies of associations between LDL-C and hypertension are lacking, as are studies using data for Koreans. In this study, we confirmed the causal effect of LDL-C on hypertension using Korean chip data. Method: The epidemiology and genotype data were collected from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study conducted by the Korea National Institute of Health and covered 20,701 subjects. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with LDL-C were selected (p-value < 5 × 10− 8 ) from the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium database, and Mendelian randomization analysis (MRA) was performed with counted genetic risk scores and weighted genetic risk scores (WGRSs) for 24 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Result: The assumptions for MRA were statistically confirmed, and WGRSs showed a strong association with LDL-C. Interestingly, while the relationship between LDL-C and hypertension was not statistically significant in the observational study, MRA study demonstrated that the risk of hypertension increased as LDL-C increased in both men and women. Conclusions: The results of this study confirmed that the relationship between LDL-C and hypertension is greatly influenced by genetic information.

Objectives: We investigated the incidence rate of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Korean adult males. Methods: Data were obtained from 2008 to 2016 in the National Health Insurance Service. The incidence was defined as a newly diagnosed patients with BPH in 2012-2016 after excluding patients with BPH in 2008-2011. The incidence rate was confirmed by age, administrative districts, and scale of city. Results: The age-standardized incidence rate of BPH was 16.3% from 2012 to 2016. The incidence rate was presented to be 8.9%, 16.8%, 25.0%, 26.7%, and 30.4%, respectively, in the 40s to 80s or over. According to administrative districts, the highest incidence rate was 18.2% and 17.3% in Daejeon and Gwangju, respectively, and the lowest incidence rate was 15.0% in Gangwon. And the highest incidence of 16.5% was observed in the big city among big city, small-to-medium city and rural area. Conclusions: The age-standardized incidence rate in Korea was 16.3% and incidence rate of BPH increased with age.

<P><B>Background:</B></P><P>Gall (Galla Rhois [GR]) is known to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimetastatic, and anti-invasion activities and exert hepatoprotective effects. However, the hepatoprotective effects of gallotannin-enriched GR (GEGR) and their mechanisms have not yet been investigated.</P><P><B>Objective:</B></P><P>The potential protective effect of GEGR against hepatotoxicity induced by hydrogen peroxide (H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>) was investigated.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods:</B></P><P>Changes in cell viability, apoptosis protein expression, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation were determined in HepG2 cells that were pretreated with four different concentrations of GEGR (6.25–50 μg/ml) for 24 h before H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> exposure.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>GEGR consisted of gallotannin (69.2%), gallic acid (26.6%), and methyl gallate (4.2%) and showed remarkable 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity (inhibitory concentration 50% = 0.212 μg/ml). The lethal dose 50% and effective dose 50% values for the response of HepG2 cells to GEGR were determined to be 178 and 6.85 μg/ml, respectively. Significant reductions in the immunofluorescence intensity indicating apoptosis were also detected in the nuclei of HepG2 cells stained with 4’,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole and Annexin V after GEGR treatment. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and active caspase-3 level were higher in H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> + vehicle-treated cells. However, these levels gradually decreased to those of the No-treated group in the GEGR pretreated group even though little or no decrease was observed in response to low GEGR concentrations. The development of primary squamous cell carcinoma in the endometrium is extremely rare. In 1928 Fluhmann proposed three criteria to establish the diagnosis: (1) no coexisting endometrial adenocarcinoma, (2) no connection between the endometrial tumor and the squamous epithelium of the cervix and (3) no squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix present. More recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated Fluhmann's criteria by adding that the tumor must contain clear evidence of squamous differentiation, such as the presence of intercellular bridges and/or keratin. We have experienced a case of primary endometrial squamous cell carcinoma which fulfills Fluhmann's criteria and WHO's. In this report, we present the clinical and pathological findings of a case of a primary endometrial squamous cell carcinoma of a 62-year-old patient with a review of the concerned literatures.

<P>The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of three different cellulose membranes (CMs) manufactured from <I>Styela clava</I> tunics (SCTs) on the healing of cutaneous wounds. We examined the physical properties and therapeutic effects of three CMs regenerated from SCTs (referred to as SCT- CMs), including normal CM (SCT-CM), freeze-dried SCT-CM (FSCT-CM) and sodium alginate-supplemented SCT-CM (ASCT-CM) on skin regeneration and angiogenesis using Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. FSCT-CM exhibited an outstanding interlayered structure, a high tensile strength (1.64 MPa), low elongation (28.59%) and a low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) compared with the other SCT-CMs, although the fluid uptake rate was maintained at a medium level. In the SD rats with surgically wounded skin, the wound area and score of wound edge were lower in the FSCT-CM-treated group than in the gauze (GZ)-treated group on days 3–6 and 12–14. In addition, a significant attenuation in the histopathological changes was observed in the FSCT-CM-treated group. Furthermore, the expression level of collagen-1 and the signaling pathway of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 were significantly stimulated by the topical application of FSCT-CM. However, no signs of toxicity were detected in the livers or kidneys of the three SCT-CM-treated groups. Overall, our data indicate that the FSCT-CM may accelerate the process of wound healing in the surgically wounded skin of SD rats through the regulation of angiogenesis and connective tissue formation without inducing any specific toxicity.</P>
Survival impact of adherence to tyrosine kinase inhibitor in chronic myeloid leukemia

Background/Aims: Adherence to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has become a critical aspect of care in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We aimed to examine the association of TKI adherence with overall survival (OS) outcomes in Korean patients diagnosed with CML and treated with TKIs using data from the National Health Information Database. Methods: This study included 2,870 CML patients diagnosed between 2005 and 2013. Drug adherence was evaluated according to the medication possession ratio (MPR) and classified as high adherence (i.e., MPR ≥ 0.95 [upper 50%]), moderate adherence (i.e., MPR ≥ 0.68 and < 0.95 [middle 25%]), and low adherence (i.e., MPR < 0.68 [lower 25%]). Results: The median MPR was 0.95 (range, 0 to 4.67). Male sex (p = 0.003), age < 70 years (p < 0.001), high income (≥ 30%, p < 0.001), and maintaining frontline TKI (< 0.001) were associated with better adherence. Adherence to dasatinib was the lowest (vs. imatinib or nilotinib, p < 0.001). Compared with high MPR patients, those with moderate MPR (hazard ratio [HR], 4.90; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.87 to 6.19; p < 0.001) and low MPR (HR, 11.6; 95% CI, 9.35 to 14.42; p < 0.001) had poorer OS. Conclusions: Adherence to TKI treatment is an important factor predicting survival outcomes in Korean CML patients. Male sex, age < 70 years, high income, and maintaining frontline TKI are associated with high adherence to TKI. Thus, those without these characteristics should be closely monitored for treatment adherence.
