Advances in the fields of proteomics and genomics have necessitated the development of high-throughput screening methods (HTS) for the systematic transformation of large amounts of biological/ chemical data into an organized database of knowledge. Microfluidic systems are ideally suited for high-throughput biochemical experimentation since they offer high analytical throughput, consume minute quantities of expensive biological reagents, exhibit superior sensitivity and functionality compared to traditional micro-array techniques and can be integrated within complex experimental work flows. A range of basic biochemical and molecular biological operations have been transferred to chip- based microfluidic formats over the last decade, including gene sequencing, emulsion PCR, immunoassays, electrophoresis, cell- based assays, expression cloning and macromolecule blotting. In this review, we highlight some of the recent advances in the application of microfluidics to biochemistry and molecular biology. [BMB reports 2011; 44(11): 705-712]

자원이 한정적인 시스템을 위해 실시간 운영체제는 자원을 효율적으로 관리해야 한다. 대부분 실시간 운영체제는 효율적인 메모리 관리를 위해 동적으로 메모리를 할당한다. 하지만 동적 메모리의 할당과 해제의 반복은 비연속적인 메모리 공간을 생성하고 이런 비연속적인 메모리의 생성은 단편화와 같은 성능을 저하시키는 요인이 된다. 논문은 실시간 운영체제에서 시간결정성을 높여줄 수 있도록 분산된 프리 메모리 블록을 할당하는 기법을 설계 및 구현하였다.

<P>DNA hydrogels are promising materials for various fields of research, such as in vitro protein production, drug carrier systems, and cell transplantation. For effective application and further utilization of DNA hydrogels, highly effective methods of nano- and microscale DNA hydrogel fabrication are needed. In this respect, the fundamental advantages of a core–shell structure can provide a simple remedy. An isolated reaction chamber and massive production platform can be provided by a core–shell structure, and lipids are one of the best shell precursor candidates because of their intrinsic biocompatibility and potential for easy modification. Here, we demonstrate a novel core–shell nanostructure made of gene-knitted X-shaped DNA (X-DNA) origami-networked gel core-supported lipid strata. It was simply organized by cross-linking DNA molecules via T4 enzymatic ligation and enclosing them in lipid strata. As a condensed core structure, the DNA gel shows Brownian behavior in a confined area. We propose a hybrid type of photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) structure, in which two-dimensional (2D) PCW is embedded in atwo one-dimensional (1D) PCW. This rather new PCW structure should be identical to a full three-dimensional PCW in itsfunctionality, but its fabrication is much simpler. Toward the realization of such an amenable PCW structure, an epitaxially grownGaAs/AlAs multilayer structure was successfully converted to an omnidirectional reector, suitable for the 1D photonic crystalstructure in the hybrid PCW. In terms of fabricating 2D-PCWs, we took a rather new approach instead of conventional electron-beam lithography. An air-bridge type of thin lm Si 2D-PCW was fabricated using a combined technique of holography andphotolithography. Optical characterizations revealed that the propagation loss of the waveguide fabricated such is comparable tothose of e-beam generating PCWs in the literature.
Public Perception of a Criminal DNA Database in Korea

Background: Since 2010, Korea has maintained a DNA database of those convicted of or awaiting trial for certain crimes. There have been proposals to expand the list of crimes included in this database, or conversely, omit certain crimes if they are committed during protests. An understanding of the feelings of the public as we consider the ethical, legal, and social aspects of a DNA database and as revisions to laws are made is required. Methodology: Questions related to the DNA database were included in the nationally representative Korean Academic Multimode Open Survey (KAMOS) panel (June-August 2016). Results: Of 2,000 randomly selected panel members, 1,013 respondents participated in this survey, including 89.2% who supported the existence of a criminal DNA database. The current system of storing DNA profiles until a suspect's acquittal or a convict's death was supported by 79.5% of respondents. In addition, 70.8% of respondents agreed with the expansion of crime categories included in the criminal database. Many (93.4%) respondents favored genetic testing and data storage to determine the identity and cause of death for people who die of unnatural causes. Some differences in attitude related to social class were noted, with those who self-identified as members of the upper class more likely to support the database and its expansion to include additional crimes than those who self-identified as middle or lower class. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that Koreans generally support the criminal DNA database.
Encapsulation Characteristics of Gas Molecules in the Cavities of Zeolite A

Encapsulation capacities $(V_{gas})$ of, $H_2,\;N_2,\;CO,\;CH_4$ and CO, for $Cs_{2.5}Na_{9.5}-A (C_s-A)$ and $Na_{12}$-A (Na-A) zeolites have been measured in order to understand the effect of molecular properties on the $V_{gas}$. With appropriate number of large blocking cations on the main windows of cavities in zeolite A, gas molecules can be encapsulated in both the ${\alpha}$ -and ${\beta}$-cages, resulting in much large $V_{gas}.\;V_{gas}$ is proportional to the encapsulation pressure (Pe) and is also dependent on the molecular properties of encapsulated gases themselves, especially on intermolecular forces originated from the quadrupole moments of molecules in the molecular-dimensioned cavities of zeolite A. At the low range of Pe, molecules with larger $V_{gas}$ and intermolecular forces apparently have smaller increasing tendencies of $V_{gas}$ upon increases in Pe, showing a linear relationship between the tendencies and intermolecular forces rather than their sizes. Interactions between encapsulated molecules of $CH_4$ and framework of Cs-A have been estimated and they seem to depend on the number of encapsulated molecules per unit cell. On the basis of calculated density of $CO_2$, presence of liquid-like phase for the encapsulated molecules in the molecular dimensioned cavities of zeolite A is postulated.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disease of unknown etiology characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal wall and peripheral eosinophilia. It was first described by Kaijser in 1937. Histologically, it is mainly characterized by infiltration of eosinophilic leukocytes. Clinical features vary according to which layer and location are involved. Its pathogenesis is not clear, but allergic and immunologic etiologies are strongly suggested. In many cases of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, allergic diseases such as seasonal rhinitis, asthma and atopic eczema are often combined. A 52-year-old woman presented with dyspepsia, weight loss and abdominal discomfort. Partial obstruction of the distal jejunum and proximal dilatation confirmed by abdominal computed tomogram and small bowel series. We report this case with the review of relevant literature.
